  • I'd suggest adding "with cashback / rebate" in the title. Good price for a big unit.

      Will do

  • No more Fujitsu for me. 4 repairs in 10 years.

    • +5

really? that surprises me, thought it was a solid brand

      • I have 4 Fujitsu Inverter AC units still going strong after 8 years of use

Only thing I've had to do over the years is clean the filters now and again

    • +1

Welp. I just bought one, here's hoping it won't have any issues!

      • +5

I've bought 4 of different sizes over the years. All going strong. Great units.

    • I've owned Fujitsu, Panasonic and Mitsubitshi Electric from new. Fujitsu was the worst of the 3. Panasonic and Mitsubishi was both very good and pretty much on par though personal preference was Panasonic.

      • +4

What made the Fujitsu so bad if you don't mind me asking. Hardware failure? Usability?Or generally not a great machine when it comes to heating/cooling?

        • I have the same question too. Planning to get two units. Have been considering Mitsubishi Electric. Not sure if this is going to be a better deal.

        • @parousia54: I can't comment on Fujitsu but i have 3 Mitsu Elec units in my house and have never had a prob - very happy with them. Occasionally a few drops of water comes out the front but i think that's normal? Ive only had them for 2.5 years tho so can't speak for longevity beyond that

        • +1

3 times was because of a circuit board that is located inside of the outdoor unit. I am waiting for the technician to come to fix the 4th time and find out what is the problem. Should be the same issue as my aircon just couldn't get cold or warm. The worst thing is I only use it for a few times every year.

        • +8

It didnt fail on me but the outdoor unit started rusting and the usability of the unit was not meticulous like the other japanese brands.
An example off the top of my head:
The fujitsu was the smallest one and was typical inverter and reverse cycle. We installed it in our newborn's room where we kept it at 18 deg during winter to ensure it didn't get colder than that overnight. 1st problem was the fan remains on all night when fan was set to auto … this means when it wasn't heating up the room, it was blowing cold air on my baby all night.
So to try and get around that, we adjusted the louvre so it blew the air horizontally across the ceiling instead of down on the baby. However, it had no "memory" of that setting and everytime we started the air con again the next day, it defaulted the air back to down again. Which means the times we forgot to set the louvre to horizontal, the baby was getting cold air all night again.
Neither the panasonic nor mitsubishi had those issues.

The Fujitsu also seemed to have the worst performance of the 3 in terms of time it took to heat up or cool down a room.

Our latest house, we installed panasonic again and we have been extremely happy with it. Everyone to their own but my personal preference was daikin, panasonic and mitsubishi … the panasonic had a deal at the time so we went with that.

I also don't recommend buying an aircon from a retailer and then getting it installed … a lot less hassle getting an installer to source it as well … no more finger pointing when it doesn't work properly … installers also get trade discounts so the prices are generally very good too.

        • @Trojan:

          Cheers for the below bit:

"I also don't recommend buying an aircon from a retailer and then getting it installed … a lot less hassle getting an installer to source it as well … no more finger pointing when it doesn't work properly … installers also get trade discounts so the prices are generally very good too."

        • @Iggemo:

          @Trojan:

          Thanks for that.

        • @Trojan:
Have a 2.5 installed in our toddler's room, only thing I could complain about is that it takes a while to have cold air comes out. Otherwise its quiet and I never use the auto function as I prefer some air circulation, the unit stops the fan on auto when it reaches the temp it requires. So tis a thumbs up.

On the finger pointing point, any installers that dont do some basic test and troubleshooting (if required) as part of install is not worth employing. Worth checking prices, etc before getting installers to do the job.

        • +1

          @yotis:

Completely agree on the testing … its when they find problems immediately after the install and then says its a faulty unit vs store saying it was a bad install.
Whereas when I purchase from the installer, the buck stops with them.

        • @Trojan:
Good point, only had one of these issue. A Samsung unit bought from JB Hifi and installed by a separate installer, the installer tested the install, advised me to contact Samsung support, Samsung support sent a contractor around the next day and sorted the issue (common fault, sticky valve from factory) and I paid the installer straight after. Am happy to do this in saving ~$300 for the small inconvenience.

        • @trump3:That isnt normal, i would say your air con unit may not be earthed properly.

    • Do you clean the filters regularly?

  • How come 2 people were able to buy it for $1,499 and $1,666 back in January? Did the ebay price go up?

    • You got me on that one. I have no idea

    • +1

i bought this for $1699 less 20% discount from GG ebay store in Nov last year…So the price has been jacked up a bit.

      • Damn you got a good deal then! How do you find the unit? Any issues?

        • +2

Seems fine to me! It's quiet and it cools. haha
But i don't really have anything to compare it with.

      • May be you missed the headlines: Record summer temperatures in Sydney, Brisbane, Gold Coast and not sure about Adelaide, but if it wasn't it must have been close. Many other locations had record or near record temperatures.

I am a bit surprised they have any left. I thought they basically had to order 6 to 12 months in advance. May be they can get more, but have to pay more for an additional production run(s).

    Fujitsu = Poor QC

  • +3

I've got three Fujitsu units around the house and they've been fine for seven years and counting. My folks have a main Mitsubishi unit for nearly 20 years now and it's been flawless and they've got two cheap units for the bedrooms they bought from Kmart, homemaker brand from memory and over ten years, still going strong. So everyone's mileage is going to vary with reliability. I went with the Fujitsu's as Mark Taylor says they're good..Lol . No..Not really, just cause they had the cash back deal at the time. Took all 3 units home in my vx wagon.. how I miss that big bugger.

  • +1

I've got 7 Fujitsu splits (previous owner must not have heard of ducted) and no real issues in the 6 years I've been here. I'd happily get one at this price if I needed one. I have 3.5kw model in large bedrooms and find it's more than enough; run them on super quiet (ie very low) mode 99% of the time they're on.

    • +5

@knasty The previous owner did you a favour - ducted systems suck. You always pay for a lot more cooling than you need and the temperature regulation in individual rooms is atrocious.

At my old place I had four Fujitsu splits and they performed flawlessly for several years. All inverters, very cheap to run compared to the ducted system in our new place.

      • +1

I hate my reverse cycle ducted. The cool air goes in the return grille and gets heated up again by the 60degree temperature in the roof? Stupid design. Wish the previous owner put in a few splits. Would've been cheaper overall and more cost effective on the power bill long term.

      • @rhodges fair enough! With the 7 air cons and a pool pump my electricity bill is still no more than around $500 per quarter so can't really complain.

    • Ducted is a waste of power and you have no individual room control.

Overall, ducted is cheaper than individual splits. Also, if it's a house with high ceilings, ducted is so useless as to be laughable.

  • +2

I was recommended to get Fujitsu by the installer as they had 5 years in home warranty. Good deal. Plus the cash-back,

  • What's the best way to install one of these? Do TGG do good deal on Installs? Or independent? How much to expect to pay for install?

And how to choose the right size?

  • +4

if you are in melbourne, these guys are cheaper $1595

I just bought this panasonic one $1538
    http://countdowndeals.com.au/heating/panasonic-cscuz24rkr-ec…

    • +1

I created a new account just to say legend.

  • Wouldn't you want ducted air conditioning for this amount of power? I can't think of any situations where 7.4kW could actually be utilized in a single room without fans to assist airflow around the room.

    • +4

      Open plan

      • Even open plan I'd assume a ceiling mounted aircon closer to the middle of the room would be more effective than this, otherwise you're relying a lot on convection for this to be effective.. and/or fans.

Only real situation I can think of where an aircon this powerful is justifiable is something like an internet cafe, it'd need to be powerful to offset the heat being produced. Any other situation it's more just (inefficiently?) compensating for lack of air circulation rather than actually needing to be this powerful. Also note you would probably need sensors elsewhere in the room to cool the room evenly, if this is supported with this air conditioner…

        • +1

I rented a place once with either a 5 or 6kw unit, just one big header in the lounge, it was a open plan loft apartment one bedder, the only thing that had a door was the bathroom. Huge ceilings, love that air-con. Even of 40 degree days it would cool that place down to a chill in 20 minutes from being a sauna. Place had atrocious insulation too, so turn that bad boy off and it was a sweat box in another 20 minutes!

I purchased 7.1kw/8kw MHI unit which after 20% cash back & mhi cash back came to $1300. Very good unit

This was in July last year but deal was around in December too. I think Bunnings may have it for similar price to $1300 with trade card as well. Was on site a couple weeks ago but can't see it this second

    Another good deal:
    https://www.bunnings.com.au/mitsubishi-heavy-industries-3-3-…

Roughly $855 with trade card as well

    • Mitsubushi , yes from me , I have 7 splits with 3 MHI 7.1kw bought from Bunnings (12xxx, after price matching & cash back), & the rest Fujitsu. No issues with any of these, but i feel MHI are much quieter..

    • Careful with the trade card, it can affect the warranty on the units. Certainly is the case with tools bought from Bunnings, where the warranty is reduced to 3 months or void as its perceived as purchased for commercial purpose.

      • While they say this, I have returned items that are supposedly diy past warranty period.

        • Yes, there have been report from people being declined on warranty purchased via powerpass cards too. For something this expensive I personally won't buy using powerpass card but that's me playing itself to make sure the full warranty is covered by Bunnings.

        • +1

          @yotis:
Either way, their prices are competitive with these units power pass or not

  • Hi, roughly how much it costs to install one ? $3000.00 or less ?

    • i would guess closer to 1K

      • Max 1k cash

    • +1

depends on a whole number of things. I got mine done for $500 cash

  • +3

    Re: cash back.
Just want to add that it's a major PITA to get the cash back from Fujitsu. They make it as hard as possible for you to get it.

You will have to attach receipts (of course) but it needs to show the whole receipt (last time I paid with Amex @ HVN, to get the statement credits (3x)) and the receipt is really long, but you still have to attach the whole thing.

They ask for 4-8 weeks to process!!!

Then, they declined my claim, saying that it was installed in commercial premises (note: cash back only applies to residential installs!)… but, I only asked them to send the VISA Eftpos card to my work, NOT that it was installed at my work… and without asking, they just declined my claim (stressed me out, made me so mad).

However, I called them and they fixed it up and it was another 4 weeks or so before they sent it out.

Very frustrating and painful process and totally un-customer-oriented.

    • +1 on this. They outsource the management of the cashback to another entity and while you do get it, it was no end of chasing up. And yes, mine was declined for some trivial reason. I attached several receipts, statements, and so on, but that wasn't to their particular -definition- of what was needed. Not customer friendly.

    • I didn't have a problem with the cashback 2 years ago.

  • +2

    Good price. Great units

    I bought 2 x 7.1 kw and 1 x 3.5 kw
Total price after cash backs - $3297
    Boom. Installed $1500
    Ozbargined very hard that day.

    • I assume the installation was back-to-back for all units.

      • Yep all back to back , 2 where mounted on 2nd story. Included cable running and electrical. If anyone wants his number Pm me (North West/west Sydney)

There is a 7.1kW Fujitsu at Blue Star Air Conditioning for $1600 unit only and you can apply the $200 cashback on the unit. I think it started yesterday.

    • Blue star will also install back to back quite cheaply … est $500

  • Blue star have terrible feedback on whirlpool.

    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1774623

even on google reviews they have terrible feedback.

    • -1

Well I had them supply and install the 7.1kW Fujitsu for a back to back single storey house and the service was fantastic and installers were very nice, also they have 5 year warranty on parts and labour.

  • No 2.5kw? I remember it used to be $5xx on ozbargain last year…..

  • +1

Be careful comparing performance of different air conditioner brands. Climate conditions vary greatly around Australia. Some brands deal better with high external temperatures and dry (Adelaide & Melbourne much of the summer). While other probably deal better with lower external temperatures, but humid. If you have the later, such as Brisbane or Gold Coast, then don't get the Panasonic. They are hopeless at removing humidity. They will frequently dump the moisture back into the room after you turn the unit off. Also the thermostats are hopeless. I haven't seen one air condition that has a good one, but this is mainly because the thermostat being in the wall unit, not the remote control. However with the Panasonic I can increase the thermostat temperature by four degrees, but it continue to cool the room down by a further two degrees (when I manually intervene). Happens frequently.

Also if you are looking at the large capacity units, then you should definitely look at a model with twin heads. The efficiency difference is quite profound. Basically the size of the head unit is too small in the large units. There is some talk about this on whirlpool. The capital cost will be higher, but if you use the air conditioner heavily then it will pay back the difference in 3 to 5 years.

Seriously wish I had purchase a unit with wifi control, at least for one of the rooms. Currently using the wifi to IR generic control. Works, probably cost less, but there is no feed back through the system.

    • Have you tried running the Pana in dry mode vs cool mode? I agree that the Pana heads and fan speed do seem low/small vs the power output.

      • Thanks for interest.

Yes, I use both modes, but I will only use the dry mode when I am not likely to turn it off for many hours. I like to cool the bedroom down at night and then turn it off. I definitely cannot use the dry mode when doing this. Even then, the cool mode can still dump a heap of moisture back in the room when I do this. The humidity actually goes higher (mid 70%) than it was before, because the temperature has been lowered. Largely defeats the point of running it.

Also the system is really really slow to cool the room down if you use the dry mode. If I want to lower the temperature of the room by 5 or more degrees, then cool mode has to used and usually with "Powerful" setting enabled.

        • Can't you run it in cool mode, then switch it over the dry for 30 minutes then turn it off?

  • +1

waiting for 20% off deal like last year. 3.5kw worked out to be $660

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/237977

  • -1

    how much is the installation?

  • Any experience with multi head systems? That is where you have 3-4 indoor units all connected to 1 outdoor unit.
It reduces the unsightly clutter of ac units outside.
Mitsubishi heavy industries has a few models. I beieve Daikin anf Fujitsu also mke them.

    • I'd also like to know about this. I want to put three heads into different rooms all on one side of my house, but not sure if the install will be more then just doing 3 back to backs. The wall itself would be less than 10 metres long.

      • The units sould be cheaper because you only have 1 outside instead of 3 and the inside ones are the same.
Although the standard 1 in to 1 out are more popular and you can get very good deals.
Installation involves more pipe to reach the one outdoor unit however you only need one power outlet instead of 3.

  • I wonder how long it will take for you to find someone to install it?
