Actually I think not, unfortunately they would render it a bit 'disco'-like. As well as the battery-eating issue I mentioned below, I subsequently recalled that there was some other reason why I stopped using them soon after buying them, but I couldn't remember what it was. So just fired mine up again now to remind myself why I didn't end up using them.

That problem is, no white/natural-looking colour of light can be chosen/emitted. The picture of the remote attached to this post (no doubt sourced from K-mart) is actually quite misleading. The colour-option on the bottom left is in fact nowhere near white, it is decidedly pink. So while the actual units look (and even feel) pretty candle-like, when you switch them on, it is simply not possible to make them look like 'real candles', because there is no 'white light' option available. The 'yellow' option is way more yellow than any real candle burns, and none of the other colour options remotely resemble a real candle flame either. This, and the battery-draining issue are a shame, because otherwise, these things would be great. I.e. they actually look and feel like real candles, until you activate them; then there's no 'realistic white' (or even 'very soft yellow') colour option available.

I have a set of these. They are OK in that they work well, but the problem with them is they suck the batteries (2 x AAAs) dry in 48 hours or less. So if you wanted to use them for ambient lighting around the place all the time/every night (which I did), you would be forever changing/recharging batteries. Which I could not be bothered to do after about day 4. ERGO, they're good for the odd occasion/party etc., but they're basically not suitable for 'everyday' use, because they drain the batteries far too quickly. I don't actually know why they drain the batteries so quickly. Maybe they have old-school/inefficient LEDS in them? They're not especially bright, and these days 2 AAAs should be able to power up a little LED light (even a flickering one) for at least a few days. In some of my other devices, they can…

    • The Kmart description says 9 x AAA batteries. Is that wrong? I was thinking about going and getting the candle set; I'd be quite happy about 2 batteries, but certainly not 9.

      • I'd say each candle has 3x AAA

        • How dumb am I? Perhaps I should see if I can obtain one of Marty64's times tables posters….

        • @Who is she:
LOL, partly my fault Wishe for the bum-steer about 2 x AAAs… I just checked and it is actually 3 AAAs per candle.

  • This is the default price.

As above says, they eat batteries - 3 per candle

  • 9 AAA is insane!!!

Put those eneloops to good use.

    • May not work with Eneloops, not quite enough voltage for the blue LED in the multicolour LED. Or it may work when the eneloops are fresh out of the charger (at 1.4V per cell), but stop working within a couple of hours as the eneloops' output voltage drops to 1.2V (this is the voltage of NiMh batteries for most of the discharge cycle).

If the candles took two batteries instead of three, you could be sure they contain a step-up circuit to supply enough voltage for the blue LED, and would be likely to work with eneloops. But running from three batteries, it is more likely they have a simpler linear regulator, or maybe just a resistor, to power the blue LED.

        'May not work with Eneloops…'

I can confirm they do work with Eneloops, all colours (including blue), but only for < 48 hours 'per charge'.

  • will be nice if the design is similar to the Ikea LED candles, which operate on 2xAA batteries. Will be so much more convenient and even better runtime too

  • Give it time and these should go on sale.

    • not unless they are on clearance.

  • Regular price is not a bargain

  • These are groovy, got some for my partner for Xmas. They do chew the batteries though, unfortunately. Price has always been $10 though, from what I've seen, so bargain status is questionable…

  • yeah it's regular price - but it's the cheapest for similar candles. even the china ones from ebay.
