Nokia Lumia 735 BG Mobile Phone $98 (Was $399) at Big W

760

Saw this at Pacific Fair QLD shopping centre. I'm assuming it is nationwide but stock is probably limited.

Good luck hunting!

PS. Only 1x left at Pacific Fair (I didn't buy it, I just saw it at approximately 4pm Saturday 11th March 2017).

I'd probaly buy this because I dont mind Windows phones but I reckon $99 is about par for a late 2014 phone with 1gb ram 8gb rom and a 7mp shooter and 720p screen.

    • +4

Agreed. Not impressive specs at all.

Although Nokia build quality is always welcome.

      • This would have been Microsoft by this point… I think….

  • +1
  • +8

Still too expensive for owning a piece of history

  • +6

Best hardware you'll find on a phone at this price. An ok AMOLED screen, Carl Zeiss optics main camera that takes ok photos, a much better selfie camera than on phones normally at this price, and even has wireless charging. The problem as always it's a windows phone with limited apps available and generally lower quality ones in the ones that do exist. If you can live with a windows phone then obviously this is a pretty decent deal if you can find stock.

It was probably a better deal from a value perspective about 18 months or so ago when they were $149.

  • Unlocked or nah?

The missus' phone is acting up and all she plays is Candy Crush and the sort, so as much as this is still a down grade (from a Nexus 5) it's probably good enough for her, at least for a while anyways.

    • Unlocked.

    • +11

Seriously, don't switch platforms on her. Going from Android to Windows Phone is a culture shock and it is likely to be a pain to port data etc.

If you need to be budget conscious, check out Coles and Woolworths. They both have 1/2 price handsets. Coles have a Huawei for ~$70 and Woolworths has a Samsung Ss G core prime for. $74.50. Check your telco provider first.

      https://www.woolworths.com.au/Shop/Search/Products?searchTer…

Sorry, lost the Coles link as my phone ran out of memory at Woolies website. Easy to find for you though :)

My wife has a Nexus 5. I would have upgraded her to Motorola G4 if she needed a new phone.

      • +2

My N5 is still going strong, but her's has had a few problems along the way, but mostly our 1 year old has been smashing her's around a bit lately and it's not always recognizing the SIM is inserted.

I'm aware of the differences in OS, and the low ass at best specs of this phone, but a friend has one from a while back and they say the build quality is tremendous and that's the main thing she's after right now. In terms of data transfer and whatnot, all she's got is a few songs and a bunch of photos and videos, which can easily be shoved on a $2 MicroSD.

We've been meaning to have a look at Coles and the sort but haven't yet had time due to TAFE and the whole baby thing, but I assumed as much, wouldn't have grabbed this either way without a quick look in those guys, but was just curious about a network unlock, since a lot of the ones (at least the last time I got a Coles/Woolies style phone) in stores seem to be locked usually.

Doubtful this would be her permanent setup anyway, just a reasonably priced temp job 'til something amazing pops up again like that ASUS phone with 4GB RAM the other week for a couple hundred.

Cheers for your time though dude, we're on Aldi prepaid by the way. Thanks! :)

  • Can it be flashed with android?

    • +2

      Nope

    • +9

Might as well wait to buy a xiaomi instead of buying this.

  • -4

    What is a Nokia?

  • +7

Had one and left it on a bus..was a great phone while i owned it. The quality of photos that it took were outstanding.

    • +30

Have one, found it on a bus, and yes, the photos are amazing :)

      • +9

        Enjoy the dickpics ;)

        • +35

Is that what they were, we thought they were cashews :-)

        • +2

          @dechah: ouch ! That hurt..
Thank you making me last early morning

  • +7

Reporting from a Lumia 735 - bought 3 years ago for $189. I still love it because I've dropped it at least from 3m height (2nd story to 1st) and quite physically reliable. Yes the apps are limited but that just means I spend less time on my phone and more time living life. I would recommend to someone who uses it for calling, messaging and general browsing but if you are using it as an alternative to your computer then you are better off with another brand altogether

    • +3

The phone wasn't out 3 years ago. Were you using a prototype? Lol

    • -6

There's even more effective and cheaper solution with 100% of "living life" - not buy a phone altogether.

    • +2

I got one about 18 months ago or more when they were on bargain sale for ~$120
I endured for about a month in the Windows environment before going back to Android.
Absolutely awesome phone except for the apps.

      Audio is loud
      Screen is AMOLED
Camera is quite good for a mid range phone (what it's supposed to be)

  • +1

I'll probably get one if I find it in my local store. Curious to try a Windows phone, plus the Microsoft wireless charging plate looks cool af.

  • +1

$399 was a completely delusional price for this phone in 2017. $99 is better, so might be a good back-up phone, but I'd seriously consider saving up a bit more and getting a Xiaomi Redmi or something.

    • $399 was delusional for this phone when released. At $99 I suppose it comes down to how much you value the cameras, local warranty, the different screen type, and if the os is suited to your needs. Pros and cons to each choice at the end of the day. The one con I found with my Redmi 3s, the main camera is not that good and worse than my cheaper Lumia 640.

  • +2

I miss Windows Phone for its Podcast app.

    • Which one was that? When I was using it a few years ago this was some of my pain points

  • +1

Not this exact model, but the Lumias are a complete disaster at my work. We switched to them to 'save money', now half the calls each day are about them not turning on at all, or freezing up or otherwise being unresponsive.

If you paid me $99 to use one of these for a month, I'd throw it at you instead.

    • +3

Don't really know why you're getting negged, exact same situation here where I work. Lumias are dead in the water and not even worthwhile "Just to use as something to call/text with" since they drop-out more than 15 year old urban kids in houso territory from high school.
Other than the screen, arguably good build quality, but whats the point if the thing inside the build is pointless.

In this price range, add $20 or so to your budget, wait for a deal and you'll definitely start finding very nice entry level androids.

  • +4

amazing camera, owned it for over a year

    • -1

I previously had the phone and upgraded to a 930 because I thought the camera quality was too poor. Besides the camera the phone was great.

  • Lumia is dead. Full stop. Forget.
Seriously - only fans buy those trash phones. My last one ( as myself was a fan of Nokia was Nokia 820 )…

    • yep Lumia was a by-product now owned by Moneysoft, Nokia is not. Will have new phone come out this year.

      • I've had too many Nokia phones I can't remember, Lumia by MS was a disaster, so I'm kinda interested in the new (licensed by SMD) lineup of phones. It's a shame Jolla doesn't get more attention though. I'll probably get one of the new Nokias just for support however irrational it might end up being.

        • +1

They should make Jolla runable on Lumia series, that might make some different. I agree that Nokia was the top 3 remarkable and reputable mobile phone maker in the 90's till Apple's 3GS than it change the whole tide. One thing I remember the most, if you drop your Nokia you wont "Oh Sh¡t !" like when you drop your iphone.

        • +1

@dlovep: hahah yeah, the last one I had was the E7 (loved the qwerty keyboard) as slow as it was, dropped it once from pocket hight and it hit bitumen screen first. Fearing the worst… but not a scratch.

  • +1

Dont believe the "Was $399" that was at launch date because I bought this for my partner 2.5 years ago for that price.

BigW are idiots for quoting the initial launch price compared to now.

    • Well they are technically correct. It "was" $399, 2.5 yrs ago.

However I would find it very amusing if supermarkets also used the launch prices for groceries when they were first launched.

      Apples, was 7 cents/kilo (1940), now $3.99.

      • Technology products depreciate over time, Fruit and Produce only increase due to inflation and supply/demand.

        E.g iPhone 6s launch price for $1,089.
Apple is now selling it for $929.

If they put a sale on to sell for $849, they wouldn't say WAS $1,089

        What an idiotic argument

However I would find it very amusing if supermarkets also used the launch prices for groceries when they were first launched

        Groceries where they first launched?

  • +1

good price - hanging on to my 640 'though (specs-wise, they seem the same except for bigger screen on 640 & better front-facing camera on 735).

    • +3

I think the key difference between this and the 640 is the screen. Usually you won't find an oled screen on cheaper phones. And oled screens are very nice to use on windows phones with its nice ui while using the dark theme.

      • +1

Agreed - Oled and blacks look awesome. I also enjoy a "bigger" (+0.3") screen :)

  • Will I be able to upgrade to the latest windows?

    • +1

Yes, this phone is still supported by Ms. Gets regular monthly updates. Just need to install the windows upgrader app to update from 8.1 to 10.

      • +1

Another decent reason to get this phone, if you are curious about w10

  • -1

i keep seeing leukemia in the title

  • +1

Weekly insider builds are keeping me very happy on W10M :)

    • Do you have this model or a different one?

      • HP Elite X3. But this can get the insider builds also.

        • Ah okay, did you have any issues with updates prior to W10? Stuck on an update that cant be installed, I googled and so many people have similar error code before they can install W10

  • +1

Windows 10M is dead and buried. I've tried several handsets, and the app situation is absolutely desolate…

    • +1

It's not dead at all. Yes its not popular like iOS and Droid, but not dead and gets a lot of regular updates. It has all the apps I use, such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Groove Music, Stan, Netflix, Spotify and the CBA. Depends on what apps are must have for you that's all.

      • -1

The quality and functionality of the W10M apps is way behind the iOS and Android versions

        • -3

Not all apps, Instagram for example gets updates now within a day or two of iOS. It's a duplicate of the same build as iOS which they port over.

        • +2

          @simmomelb:

This has been discussed before plenty of times…

ANZ, NAB, CBA and Westpac are all much more functional on Android/iOS, even without taking into consideration things what W10M doesn't support at all such as NFC…

Facebook on W10 is several generations behind iOS/Android, snapchat isn't even there, ebay have pulled their app altogether…

And that's not all, MS Office is available for both Android and iOS so even that's not a redeeming feature…

And I don't buy the excuse of "open the mobile web page and pin it to the home screen if there's no app"…I can do that on other platforms as well, but the whole point of an app is to have convenient logins and easier UI compared to the web interfaces for things.

I would get a Surface any day over an iPad or Android tablet, but I would not get a Windows phone over an iPhone or Android device.

        • @simmomelb: False. Features like Stories and Live were weeks, if not months, overdue on WP, even though it is a shoddy port of the iOS version, to say nothing of its performance issues. Secondly, you cannot seriously say an app is supported just because it exists. FB Messenger is a hog that takes forever to resume, Spotify still frequently crashes and there's a thread almost every other day on the WP sub complaining about it. CBA is an embarrassment, it hasn't been updated in literally years (can't pin exact date since Microsoft removed the 'last updated' data in the Store) and so still lacking basic functionality like tap and pay.

  • -1

I think they've dropped the price because this phone's network (3G) is only being supported for another month or so…

If someone can confirm that would be helpful, but I wouldn't buy it because I'm fairly sure you won't be able to use it in a months time if you do.

    • +1

I believe its the 2G network that they are shutting down

  • 1g ram? Anyone knows how it run google maps?

    • Google maps and Google apps aren't available on Windows Phone. However usually there's third party alternatives that can act as a replacement, but also vary in quality. Some third party apps such as mytube are arguably better than the official android alternative. Microsoft provide their own mapping app, which in some ways is better than Google maps. Microsoft maps run fine on this hardware. Lower specs and less ram is less noticeable performance wise on a windows phone than what it is on Android phones.

    • The "g maps" app does this perfectly and uses google maps.

      • Does gmaps app have voice navigation now? It's also cost money to remove ads. Yes, there's usually 3rd party options available for Windows Phones.

    • +3

      Here Maps

  • +1

I had one of these. It was great.
Don't buy it though. If you use banking apps, don't buy it.
If you use apps, don't buy it.
    I had a 530, 630, 635, 735, 1020, 930 and a 950 (which I returned immediately with problems out of the box).

    I bought a Moto G4 plus instead.

WM10 still has potential, but not in smartphones. The 'next big thing', yes.
But currently android runs rings around it.

Furthermore, their Australian repairer is completely useless. Sub standard, ridiculous and unprofessional after sending my 930 to them three times for the same problem.
Ended up taking back to the store and demanding my money back as unfit for purpose.
Bought a 950. Returned it immediately with the same issues as the 930.

They're nice to play with. But don't buy it.

If you want a proper Nokia, wait until we get their new android phones over here.

    • The new ones aren't made by Nokia, so they aren't "proper" Nokia. Nokia itself has stopped making phones, much like this one isn't the real Nokia. Does anyone really care though? Probably not.

The main issue is this device only has 1GB of RAM, but that won't bother a lot of people.

      • MS bought out the mobile devision of Nokia and rights to use their patents. I do remember hearing that MS sold the feature phone part of the company to foxconn (whom I remember produced their N1 tablet before that sales happened), but impact of that will apply to the new Surface Phones if they come out, since it's fairly recent.

Nokia no longer holds its mobile division and how it produces its mobile products are via licensing. Just thought I'd add bit more details :P
        http://www.zdnet.com/article/microsoft-nokia-deal-11-quick-f…

I think that MS's Lumia series are more like Nokia phone than you give credit for though (since they did buy the entire division + I think this phone was still designed when Nokia was still "Nokia"), but I think that's up to debate.

RAM definitely would be an issue but I don't think it was that bad on Windows Phone. It's simliar to iOS with multitasking if I remember correctly. It's a pity that Windows Phone didn't catch on, my gf and I both enjoyed the OS. We both moved because of issues with certain apps. My case was more complex than that, but in a nutshell it was that along with few other reasons.

        • It's definitely not similar to iOS. 1gb iOS devices multitask like 3gb Android devices and here's a video that explains why iOS is so frugal with it's memory.

          https://youtu.be/lCFpgknkqRE

Windows mobile just requires less resources to run than Android, that's why it's run better.

        • @Ronnnie: I read the article that came along with the video, but didn't watch the video. If the video says something about Windows Mobile specifically when the written article version didn't, what I am saying might be not valid and I am fine with that.

Anyways, you are giving me a comparison between iOS and Android (the article) and telling me that Windows Mobile is better than Android with memory and Windows Mobile isn't like iOS. I don't see the connection behind that.

He does talk about RSS and how iOS has a significantly lower RSS on apps in background. He talks about how that doesn't work with apps that are running in foreground (i.e. he talks about split view) and how Apple increased RAM for the devices that does split view (Air 2, Mini 4). So I don't think I am being ridiculous when I say, iOS limits multitasking more than Android does. Both approaches has ups and downs (just saying this to clarify that I do see both approaches as reasonable approaches).

With all that, what I want to say was, on scale of iOS to Android, what did Windows Mobile was like. So It's simliar to iOS with multitasking (compared to Android) if I remember correctly.

Because that's how I remember what Windows Phone did. Like with its live tiles and how removing that restriction on refresh rate caused few issues. That suggests to me that they limit background processes. "It just requires less resources to run than Android" might be true, but why?

      • -1

1 GB of RAM is ample for a Windows Phone. There's no apps to require RAM.

  • Does anyone know where there is stock in the Western Suburbs of Melbourne?

    • +2

There was some on Friday at Werribee plaza but unsure of current stock
