Apple USB-C to USB-C Charge Cable (2m) $15 @ Myer (Half Price)

670

Was in Myer at Pacific Fair and saw these genuine apple USBC cables half price. Only in store. Still $29 everywhere else.

Guy in store advised they were marked down as apple are releasing new packaging for the cable.

Model : MLL82A

Edit: @qbagger has found a review on this product showing it is really good. It's a 5a cable with emarker.

New packaging you say. I wonder if they will get rid of something like the little hole at the top of the box to hang the products as part of their new innovation. RIP headphone jack

    • +1

I think the new cable packaging also comes with increased cost. I think i saw them for $49. Not sure if the cable has changed in anyway though

      • All good. My comment was tongue and cheek in reference to the removal of the headphone jack on the iPhone 7.

  • hmmmm new package containing details of the USB-C connection for iPhone 10th Anniversary edition????

    • +2

      USB-C to Lightning cable?

  • Can't see the price

    Edit-
    I can now, new pic

See below for a very detailed summary of the Apple USB-C to USB-C cables. TL:DR = be careful with this "square box" as it may not be able to charge your device.
    https://plus.google.com/102612254593917101378/posts/dcLuKzGe…

Edit: Actually it looks like this is the rectangular box and model you want!

    • +1

Not sure why you're being downvoted.

Apple has two USB-C cables, one is possibly the best USB-C cable on the market the other is quite poor.

      • Me neither! I'm just trying to help people buy the right product.

    • +1

MJWT2ZA/A = bad one that comes in square box and it normally sells for $49.
MLL82AM/A = good one that comes in rectangular box it normally sells for $29

  • Aren't aaple cables famous for being terrible quality? I'm no apple user, so I'm not sure.

    • +5

Yeah, the stress relief on them is bad. It's a great cable because it supports 29W charging, whereas many others don't.

As a general rule, with USB-C, I'd avoid buying dodgy unbranded cables. A Google Engineer who reviews cables used one that had wires incorrectly soldered that destroyed his Pixel notebook.

      • +2

Last I looked about two weeks ago the same engineer highly rated at least some of the Apple cables, fwiw. Stress relief can be an issue but frankly people should pull the cable by the connector anyway.

        • +4

Also if an apple cable (whether USB C or Lightning) breaks you just go into an Apple Store and exchange it for a new one.

        • +1

@kathmandu-jeff: yeah, this is a good point. I've exchanged several cables at the Apple Store over the years. The staff don't even think twice, they just grab one off the shelf, unwrap it and give it to you. Their service is great. Just annoying that the cables don't last.

        • @kathmandu-jeff:

I did not know that. Do you need a receipt or anything? My kids can destroy the genuine cables in a matter of weeks so a freebie exchange would be a godsend.

        • +1

@Orrelljet: they sometimes note down your device's serial number but most of the time they just grab one off the shelf and give it to you.

        • @kathmandu-jeff:

          Top job :-)

    • Get a Anker PowerLine+ for $25 you get a nylon braided cable

Over priced. Slapping a logo on it doesn't justify increasing the cost.
Quick example of good quality product at cheaper cost. Sure you could find cheaper still if you spent more than 2min.

Unfortunately people with Apple devices rarely take the time to spend 2 mins doing any research into their choices. Hence why they pay top dollar for outdated hardware and an OS targeted at 5 year olds and technophobes.

      • I don't really use Apple products, but a lot of the software engineers at my workplace do and they seem to think it's worth the cost.
The outdated hardware argument is no longer valid. Apple use relatively new stuff in their computers.

How many years did it take apple to add a fingerprint reader in? Or NFC? Or memory expansion….. Oh wait, we are still waiting for that. How about iris login… Nope, also waiting for that one still ;)

        • -1

          @simmomelb:

Buy a 3rd party fingerprint reader. Passwords are fine as is. My 10 year old HP laptop had a fingerprint scanner. Apple are clearly not interested in implementing that in their laptop, because their current system works fine.

NFC is not used in Apple laptops, because they want sole ownership over who can access their NFC chip. Stopping people from opening up their products is one of the ways Apple makes a lot of money. They don't want people messing around under the lid of their products.

        • @sillysam: Speaking about their phones :) but iris login and fingerprint on their computers is definitely long overdue. It's looking a little dated not having one of these on a premium product nowadays.

        • @simmomelb:

Implementing micro SD cards would mean that their profit would decrease and they would have to enable a file manager on their iphones. Buy an Android/Windows phone.

        • @sillysam: They will do it, just a matter of time, you'll see. They've done it with everything else. A file manager on a phone? We'll of course, you'd expect that in 2017 :)

        • +1

          @simmomelb:

No, they won't. I'm willing to put money on that.

        • @sillysam: Hence why I won't be getting one unless they do. I'm not the only one that finds this backward.
Unless you are apple brainwashed, I'm sure you can even admit this would be a step in the right direction for consumers :)
When they do, everyone will be like… Oh wow, a memory card expansion, incredible ;)

        • +1

          @simmomelb:

It's not backwards and I don't think Apple consumers care to be honest. Iphones come in 256 GB variants with NVME storage these days and they seem to sell quite well too. Apple's profits were the highest they've ever been after the iphone 7 launch. I also highly doubt that the average Apple user uses more than 64 GB of storage.

My Samsung S7 Edge has a 256 GB micro SD card and 32 GB of internal storage. That's only slightly more than what the 256 GB iphone can hold.

I'm sure you can even admit this would be a step in the right direction for consumers :)

I don't think it is in the right direction. Apple does not allow their phones to be used as USB mass storage devices. They won't modify their OS or include a file manager to accommodate a micro SD card not to mention making space for a micro SD card. That would mean shifting profits away from APple and more money into the hands of Sandisk, Toshiba and Samsung.

My question is, why are you so desperate for an iphone with a micro SD card? Just use an Android phone. They are far better imo.

        • -1

@sillysam: Because I hate android and anything google, I want an iPhone but with SD card options. Dream I will.

        • +1

          @simmomelb:

I can't imagine why anyone would hate the most popular mobile OS in the world.

Sounds like you need to do some learning.

        • @sillysam:

My Samsung S7 Edge has a 256 GB micro SD card and 32 GB of internal storage. That's only slightly more than what the 256 GB iphone can hold.

and with this, a 32gb S7edge with a 256gb memory card costs around $900, iphone 7 256gb costs $1379. $479 less and 32gb more storage. It's insane that people are willing to pay that much more for a phone, that honestly barely has any real advantages over the Samsung. I myself prefer the HTC 10, which is another $100 cheaper for taht combo.

Pound for pound Macs smash Windows equivalents, even on battery life.
Independent test after test after test.
Only simpletons spend 5 seconds looking at a price and then cry out "over priced rubbish"

        • That simply is not true. Show me one test that proves this. 5 seconds looking at price? I don't think so. It is comparing every piece of HW on a mac vs the HW on a non-MAC and looking at the price based on the overall components list. This takes time but becomes very evident very fast that the mac stuff is ridiculously overpriced for what is essentially old and outdated hardware. Look at the cost to upgrade the ram in a macbook or a ssd and tell me that isn't just plain ridiculous in comparison to a non-mac machine.

    • I don't know whether that cable is any good or not, but firstly it's shorter, secondly the description mentions USB2 speeds (?) and thirdly there i no mention of USB-PD.

    • 1m vs 2m. don't be an ignorant elitist.

    • I bought that exact one in white. Got it because blitzwolf is usually good.
It lasted less than a month, failed when the flexible cable was bent near the stress relief. Cheesed of because it was $10 too.

    • That cable can't charge MacBook Pros properly.

    • 1 metre long. Basic comprehension is clearly not your strong point

    • Please post a 2m 5A cable for comparison. I don't normally but Apple products but this does seem a reasonable price for a decent quality cable with these specs.

Are there any in the city Myer store? Will use it at work to charge phone. Can you plus into a power adapter?

    • I went to Sydney one yesterday & they had none of them.

  • So will this be perfectly fine as a quick charge 3 USB c lead from a charger to an lg v20.?

    • +3

Looks to be fully compliant up to 5a. Worked all fine with my Google pixel.

Also worked on my non compliant USBC qc3.0 charger to my mi5s

      • Thanks.

  • -2

So half that price twice more and you have a deal.

  • Can you place a USBC into a standard USB port on your MacBook? Or does it require a special port in more modern Macbooks?

  • +1

I can't wait for this cable to become the norm for pretty much any connection!
Not at this horrendous price though (even though it appears to be good for the time being)!

  • Tobz, were there quite a few of these cables left at Pacific Fair? Going there tomorrow and hoping to pick one up…

    • About 10 were left after i took 2 of them

      • Went to the Myers there today but there is no trace of them any more. Oh well, need to be quicker next time… :)

        • Did you happen to ask the guy? They were in the apple section, on the double sided shelf with all the apple cables. There's the old square box ones on the top rack, and then right at the bottom there are the rectangular ones. Unless someone went and bought them all!

        • @Tobz: I asked the lady there and checked out all the stuff on the 2-sided shelf (I also saw the square box ones) but to no avail. I was only after one cable but someone must have indeed cleared out the entire supply.

  • Good if you're after a USB C charging brick, as they don't come with a charging cable, even though it costs $109 (61W) or $129 (87W)

  • Can someone explain to me the difference between USB-C connections? I have this charging cable and it won't transmit video/data from my USB-C monitor to my MBP? Probably why it's labelled as a "charging cable"?

Are there different types of USB-C cables?

    • Seriously? That's it, I'm holding out for USB-D.

    • +1

The USB-C spec is really confusing.

USB-C only describes the connector, not what protocol is being used to communicate. The main modes are:
      Thunderbolt 3
      USB 3.1 gen 2
      USB 3.1 gen 1
      USB 2.0
USB Alternate Mode (display output etc.)

There is also USB-PD which is used for charging. You cannot use a normal USB to USB-C adapter as USB-PD uses extra pins in the connector to deliver more watts.

      • USB 2.0: GTFO

  • Anyone seen any stores in WA have them at this price?

  • Zero at Myer Macquarie centre today
    will try another Myer tomorrow

  • Perfect timing. Thanks, OP. I picked up a couple at Bondi Junction and I think they have a few more left.

  • Does anyone know where to get an AC adaptor for these?

  • Myer Indooroopilly in Brisbane have 4 left at the moment.

  • Myer Southland (Melbourne) has a bit of stock available.
