71

Virgin Credit Cards are back again!
After being out of the market for a fair while (for new applicants) with their original Mastercard, people can now sign up for a new Visa from Richard.

Apply for the new Virgin Flyer Credit Card by September 30 2010, use it by October 15 2010 and we'll throw in a Virgin Blue ‘Go’ fare flight for free on eligible routes in Australia.

That’s only the start. Now when you buy with Virgin you can fly on Virgin. Earn 1 Velocity Point for every $1 you spend up to $1,500 per month, and after that you’ll earn 1 point for every $2 spent.

There’s more. If you buy a Virgin Blue seat with your new card you get a second seat for free 4 times a year. All you have to do is cover the credit card booking fees. So pick your favourite friend and make their day. Get flying more often for just a $99 Annual Fee.

*As usual, check the full terms and conditions at:
http://virginmoney.com.au/downloads/credit-cards/Free_Flight…

Also, there's still the no annual fee Visa Card which has the following features:
•No annual fee. Ever
•A low balance transfer rate of 2.9% p.a. for the first 6 months
•A great purchase rate of 16.95% p.a.
•Enjoy up to 44 days interest free on purchases
•Access to Virgin family offers

*Interest rate seems quite high, so try and make your payments within 44 days. OK for no annual fee, though.

The free flight is only on Go! Fare flights (ie. if the date you want doesnt have a Go! Fare, you can't choose it), and only on the few selected routes. These types of fares usually only cost $49-69. But hey, free is free, that's why this is OzBargain!

    • Correct - it seemed too much copying and pasting everything in the terms and conditions, so that's why I just said "*As usual, check the full terms and conditions at:" as there are a fair few terms and conditions mentioned there that some people may consider a bargain, others perhaps not?

  • I've never really changed cards, but I do have a need for a local one, so….

With the balance transfer, do you have to transfer the entire balance from your old card, or can you specify how much?

    • +1

You can transfer any amount up to your new cards limit. All they do is make a payment on your old card on your behalf. You dont have to close the old credit card account either.

    • +1

Be careful - don't be lured in by low balance transfer rates. The fact is that any payment make goes towards the balance transfer. Only then can you pay off your new Virgin credit card purchases attracting 16.95% pa.

Ergo: If you apply for a balance transfer, don't use the card until you've paid it off!

  • I'm confused with the statement "Get flying more often for just a $99 Annual Fee." on the fourth paragraph. What is this if there is no annual fee?

    • me too :S

    • As far as I know the frequent flyer card is $99pa and the other is fee free. There are 2 different types of cards.

    • that bit also confuse me too, maybe $99 annual "member" fee comes with 4 free seconds seats and discount airfare after that??

      • +2

it means you only get to sit in the seat for 4secs max… 8-))

    • I looked at the line "Also, there’s still the no annual fee Visa Card which has the following features.."
I guess the word "also" meant another card, and sure enough, looking on the website there's the No Annual Fee card and the $99 a year Virgin Flyer Credit Card.

  • these aren't frequent flyer points… you earn "velocity points" which can be used for flights on virgin airlines. different to frequent flyer points.

    • Thanks - have changed title accordingly.

    • Velocity Rewards is a frequent flyer program. They are frequent flyer points. They can be redeemed on more than just the Virgin Blue group of airlines.

      • yes but it is seperate to the Qantas frequent flyer program

    <div>
    There are two different card
    * Virgin VISA - "No Annual Fee Credit Card"
    * Virgin VISA Platinum - "Virgin Flyer Credit Card"

The details in the post above the link is related to the Platinum card. You HAVE to pay $99 annually. But you get the benefits of free seats and velocity points.

The standard has no annual fee, but you don't get all the perks.

I would just stick with a regular bank card (e.g. CBA) where you can spend the points as you like - you can even convert them to velocity reward points if you really want.

  • Yeah, guys just go on the site via clicking the picture - it's all there.
    Not that hard honestly. :p

  • No flights to and from WA AND NT ….!!! NOT FAIR !

    1. To be eligible for the free flight offer, you must apply for Virgin Flyer Credit Card by 30 September 2010 and make a retail purchase with the Virgin Flyer Credit Card by 15 Oct 2010. If eligible, the Primary Cardholder will receive a one-way Virgin Blue GO fare class flight to and from select destinations which do not include NT and WA. Flight must be booked through the Virgin Blue Guest Contact Centre within 3 months of first card spend. Redemption on new flight bookings only after 16 Aug 2010 and must be made at least 21 days in advance of travel. Free flight subject to availability and is not available on all routes. No Baggage allowance is included. Check out here for further terms and conditions.
  • The original virgin credit card (which still exists but has been renamed to ignite by westpac) seems better value.

    For the no-annual-fee card:
    old = 14.24%, new = 16.95% pa
    old = 55 days, new = 44 days
old = "instant offers", new = "virgin family offers"
    both have no annual fee

Def better in every way (except we no longer have a colour choice, so can't coordinate card with outfit. DISASTER)

  • has anyone been sucessful in getting the Virgin Flyer Credit Card annaul fee waived? did anyone that preregister get the bonus 10k points on the no annual fee card since the email offer wasnt clear?

  • -1

…and after signing up, a few months later do they automatically transfer your card to another bank, same as last time? If I'd wanted a credit card with another institution, I could have got that?

  • yes westpac took over the last virgin card. citibank issue the new ones. i think i stick with my no annual fee citibank gold card unless virgin waive the annual fee on the flyer card.

    • -1

Yes. While it sort of makes no difference, issuing a card then handing it over to another company doesn't spell out reliability to me, and I was fairly annoyed to be automatically transferred to being a Westpac customer without any consultation or option to disagree - grounds to not pay any fees in my opinion, as I never agreed to…

      • +1

The original Virgin cards were always owned and managed by Westpac. Virgin was just a rebranding.

        • dont let facts get in the way of a good mindless rant

These cards are issued by Citibank. Has anyone tried applying for one? Before you do ring their "support" line 13 37 39 and see how easy it is to deal with them. I opened a saving account which offered a very attractive 6.75% but just closed it because the user unfriendliness of the site and lack of support made the whole experience so frustrating. I tried to apply for a credit card but could not get the net and gross income numbers to be accepted by the on line application process - no point in ringing customer support, which is an offshore call centre - almost impossible to get to speak to someone. So in summary this is RB using the Virgin brand to offer a fairly poor, ill supported product. In my view not worth the effort.

    • totally agree with that, the website is unfriendly, I have to change my login id 10 times because some stupid reasons, finally I gave up and use the default one given, which is very hard to remember. So i think maybe better stuck with my 6.51% ubank.

I've found the offshore call centre very easy to deal with. In fact, the last time I spoke with them, they rang me. I was booking some overseas travel and booked a hotel in Rome, then 5 minutes later booked a hotel in Poland. Before the second booking confirmation email arrived from Expedia, the phone was ringing and a Citibank employee was checking with me to make sure that it was actually me that was making the transactions.

Big thumbs up for security from me - nice to know they're watching.
