      oh shut up

Lol I love that everyone thinking the same thing

Will this be a good replacement for my nexus player? Its starting to feel a bit sluggish and sometimes am having audio issues with plex and netflix

    • +2

Yes. This runs vanilla Android TV - see https://www.android.com/intl/en_au/tv/xiaomi-mi-box/
It also has upgraded specs compared.

      • Both run vanilla android TV with mi not getting monthly security or OS updates. Processor is actually weaker by a bit than the Nexus player which is baffling

    • I have both and don't see any difference between the 2. One advantage of the Xiaomi is the remote is a lot nicer and should be easy to replace if broken or lost. It's impossible to get a genuine replacement remote for the Nexus Player. I've had 3 remotes go on the Nexus Player (yes, I own 3 players)

      • +1

Also have both, both feel pretty similar, Mi Box will do 4K though which doesn't really matter in my use case (1080p bedroom TV)

Nexus player gets all the updates, Mi Box gets none..

      • Can't get power supply either got two Nexus player myself. Voice remote is rubbish too always has been , just use either the app or just use TV remote

    • +1

It is actually weaker at specs and benchmarks than the Nexus player. Even though it does 4K it doesn't do it very well - if you want a good review, watch Lon Seidmans one on YouTube where he shows it being a bummer at 4K

I bought a Mi Box from the last deal, and it arrived last week. The Android TV interface is very snappy and the voice control on the remote works really well. One annoying issue is that it drops frames when playing content from Plex. Not a lot, but enough to be noticeable. It seems like this is a known problem. Using the Plex add-on via Kodi does not drop frames however! (I would rather not go through Kodi just to use Plex though.)

  • Can you install apps to external drives? 8Gb is too limiting.

    • +1

Yes. You can plug a USB Flash drive into the USB port and format it as Android Adoptable Storage.

  • This a good Kodi box?

    • +2

      Yep

  • already got chromecast 2, worth upgrading to this?

    • +1

The xiaomi mi box is considered an all in one box, you can still stream videos from your lan without internet access and doesn't require another device to setup the box. With chromecast you need another device to cast to it and requires internet access.

      • You banged it on the head with this one, spot on. Android TV is a nicer interface too always i bought both generations of Chromecast but prefer this over it

WARNING: MC-MART has changed the spec.

    > Korean Version which with Korean specification.

You want Model: MDZ-16-AB international version.

This looks more like the real McCoy, and at us$70, only a few dollars more:

This is the above model you mentioned. :) What grounds was your neg based on?

      • They changed the description. Image was "global version", now "offical version".

It used to say MDZ-16-AB , and now it says Korean version.

Maybe the Korean model is same MDZ-16-AB, but why do they no longer give the model number then?

        See https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/294253?page=1#comment-4516…

I don't like sellers pulling a switch like this.
I bought from the same seller months ago, and got the proper MDZ-16-AB with an AU/china power supply, but that was then.

Why not pay a couple of extra dollars, until someone confirms that the Korea model is the same?

        • can you just flash a new rom/firmware to make it so called GLOBAL ?

        • @rusty2k:
I hope so. Probably even easier, but no confirmation yet.

The Chinese one cannot be given a global firmware, so I'm hesitant.

Neg was because of the switch, and not worth the risk to save a couple of dollars over other sellers.
Hopefully somebody will confirm. So far just the one buyer saying his was in Chinese. Hopefully it is actually Korean.

        • @manic: The seller has sent me a photo of stock showing the model you stated. Im waiting a week to buy as the savings is worthwhile.

        • +1

          @PR0r:
Good news, if thats what you get.

I'd still recommend others to pay a couple of dollars extra for the English-language version that used to be sold by MC-TECH before they switched to Korean model.

        • @PR0r: can you please share post the image as others will want the evidence also prior to commitment. Thanks

    • this is what I was worried about.. been trying to find a legit "Android TV" model as from all my research thus far.. you can't just flash firmware onto it.

the non android tv versions are just cheap android boxes for the asian market with people rooting them and sideloading google apps and apk files like kodi

      EDIT
but can the android tv version still install normal apps or is it a fully fledged media device that can only install SVOD apps? I really only want it for KODI/Pandora/YoutubeRED

  • Yeah almost as many models of these mi boxes as Samsung s7 phones….. Make you get right version also some sites have AU power packs for a few dollars more.

  • I got 3S 2 days ago for ~$50 :(

  • I posted a question in another recent thread about this same product, and received a helpful response. But I'm a bit hesitant about the fact that it relies on wifi.

Can anyone recommend a good alternative, with an Ethernet port? Maybe I'm just a traditionalist, but I still prefer a wired connection to wifi. Or is this really a non-issue?

There are so many no-name Android boxes available, I just need some help narrowing it down. Cheers

    • +1

Can anyone recommend a good alternative, with an Ethernet port?

Sure. The Shield. Or new Apple TV. Costs far more though.

There are so many no-name Android boxes available,

Some are good for Kodi, some utter crap, but none will do HD Netflix or youtube. Or have the nice remote.

    • +1

The actual Wifi bandwidth (150/300/600MBps) is more than the actual adsl2+ line bandwidth and even most NBN plans.

    • +1

Ive got a few of the mi boxes and also a few 'cheap no name brand' android boxes.

Firstly, no ethernet on mi box doesnt seem an issue. It works off my dual band N router fine, no slowdowns, streams 4k etc, no prob. I was hesitant about this also and wanted an ethernet solution. Dont be.

For Kodi, the cheap boxes will work, i got RK3229 chipset ones ($37aud delivered each) and they run kodi fine. The remotes are IR and pretty crap, the mi box bluetooth remote is awesome in its simplicity (voice remote commands work really well too).

Mi boxes run official android TV, so has built in chromecast (big positive for me) and all other official apps (4k Netflix/youtube/Plex/Kodi), super smooth. The android boxes, not so much. If you're cheap and only ever want kodi, go $38aud rk3229 or similar chipset android box. If you can afford $100, go Xiaomi mi box for sure.

  • Anyone no or a bit higher priced version i get get before 30days (shipping time seems too long for these!)

  • They should have arrived by now.

Can anyone confirm if the device is global version, easy to set up with English?

    • Sure. But your store currently does not have anything worth posting. When you run a sale on an item you can post it here, keep in mind that if another store is cheaper, it's not worth posting.
Feel free to pm me if you need help or interested in running any deals.
