Pronounce GIS as "jizz" - now you're on the right track.

GIS is Geographic Information System. It's basically mapping, elevation (height), terrain (eg. types of ground), etc. You deal with information like line of sight (ie. can you see between two locations). It has a mature API and supports developing all sorts of powerful projects if you're working with the environment (the real world).

As an example, it may be useful for surveys and help with cost estimates and risk identification for civil engineering projects eg. where you're building roads.

ESRI has been a leader in GIS for a long time.

I'm not affiliated with ESRI but I have developed using ESRI ArcGIS and other GIS products.

      • Have you developed for MapInfo?

  • How long does the free access last? If I'm somewhat proficient in QGIS, is this even worth it, knowing my access will be taken away?

    • +1

      Stick with QGIS

  • Havnt been able to login for this. Anyone had luck?

  • Yup, done week 1.

    • Awesome. Have just worked out how to do it. You have to create an account which i thought already had been created on first registration.
