Gator 360° Camera/Dash Cam 2K HD $129 @ Supercheap Auto

80

Just got this email, it looks like a legitimate deal as they are selling for $299 on eBay and there was another result in Google for OzBargain this year at a slightly higher price. I can't vouch for it good or bad, but it looked interesting.

I just noticed this deal ends April 2nd - I've edited the title to reflect my initial mistake of thinking this was today only.

  • Has anyone used one?

I cant find a decent review

  • Certainly looks interesting, can anyone share their experience?

  • so if you buy tonight you also get $20 credit?

    • +1

      Yup!
Makes it roughly $100 flat (effectively)

  • is it really suitable for DashCam in car use? I mean I doubt you can see much in the way of Rego plates.

and where do you mount it ? upside down on the headliner?

  • +4

Seems like a bad idea for a dash cam to me. The last thing you want is your own footage working against you (ie, where you were looking / what you were doing / etc.).

    • haha good point!

    • the truth is best and should be priority, but you make a fair point, though it is a moral dilemma.

      • +2

In general I agree that truth is best, but in matters of law I'm definitely on the side of not opening yourself up to more issues than you need to.

      • Its interesting, insurance companies in Australia don't want to give customers with dash cam's discounts, because dash cam's will reduce their ability to defend when their customer is at fault. So to give incentive's people with dash cam's is not in their best interest. The number of cases where they are not at fault might not necessarily increase either.

        • @m9: Yea I'm replying from mobile. Fighting auto works on my phone is not really a battle I can be (profanity) dealing with standing on a train. It also insists on trying to spell us language instead of Australian in spite of what I have set.

      • It is best not to incriminate yourself. That doesn't require lying!

        • Sure, if you wish to be dishonest.

        • +1

          @Bamboozle:

It isn't dishonest. Ask your lawyer or your insurance company if admitting fault is a good idea.

    • Yeah, same here. The visibility at any level of distance looks sort of terrible. If possible you want to capture the number plate, especially for a hit and run.

    • I can think of many, many more cases of where I'd like to use my dash cam FOR my own case, rather than against myself. I think it could actually be quite useful for any instance in which you are in the right - this is what dash cams are supposed to be for, right?

      • +1

I'm not saying dash cams are bad, I own one. I'm just saying that I don't think having a dash cam that shows you is in any way beneficial, and in fact can actually act to your detriment. Ie, if you happen to not be looking where you're going and hit someone who was also doing something wrong, then in some cases both parties would be at fault. Without the footage showing where you were looking then it's more likely to just be their fault.

I can't think of any situation where it would be beneficial to you to have footage of what you were doing at the time of an accident.

        • I didn't miss that, but I would generally be doing the right thing, I do understand your point however, that it cannot help more than a normal dashcam in many circumstances. I wasn't trying to be argumentative at all.

I certainly wasn't defending the use of this thing either. I have never owned any type of dashcam, but I have looked into it. I have had experiences where I wish I had owned one, believe me.

  • Can someone explain how the hell these are supposed to work?

  • Does this also take photos?

  • Read the manual before buying it. It should answer some of your questions
