The USB to TTL Serial Cable Adapter is useful for anyone applying custom firmware to their home router etc - as if they brick it often using one of these is the only way to recover. Helped me with my Netgear R7000.

It's useful if the drivers for it aren't shit and actually work, as I find isn't the case with most of these cheap adapters.

Agreed - the one I bought off eBay had a counterfeit chipset in it - I could download an older driver version that worked - but every hour or so Windows 10 automatically updated to the latest driver version from the manufacturer which blocks the counterfeit chips.
But it did what I needed it to do - as long as I did it quick while the older version was installed.

I dont think this one has that problem - different chipset and the page has a link to the driver.

      • If it really is FTDI chipset then you use their drivers and they work well.

Its probably a lot safer to use Linux than Windows with 3rd party drivers.

I managed to brick a blue-ray player using one of these. My fault with writing to the wrong device node on the command line.

  • Anyone tried these controllers on RetroPie? Wanting to try out emulators on the Raspberry Pi, but need a couple of cheap controllers.

    • Start with USB ones. Cheap and simple.

      • Too far from the tv, USB cables and a hub will be too messy and cost almost as much as Bluetooth.

    • I tried a few of the cheapie controllers, imho they are all crap.
Avoid the massive frustration from buttons that are too squishy and get an ibuffalo!
