Well I seem to have been charged both the discounted amount, and the full amount ($7 plus $37). I will absolutely lodging a transaction dispute with my bank, and following up with ACCC.

    • +2

I got charged twice as well. They issued me the standard "oh that code isn't meant for" speel a few hours later…

Based on what I'm reading here they can't do anything but they can charge me twice…

First time using Ubereats here, not impressed!

      • +1

As did I.. Completely ignored me pointing out that! Then they had the nerve to end the email with "I'm afraid we can engage no further with respect to this issue." Absolutely deplorable customer service.

        • +1

Wow. Now they are refusing to engage further about this? Ouch.

        • They called it a pre-authorization charge. It wasn't though. Just because it was small enough to look like one they decided to use its guise to excuse this.

        • +2

@Bunnyburger: Seriously, what asswipes. I have screen shots of the completed order (with the -$30 on it), the additional unauthorised charge, and the actual receipt via the app.

  • first time doing chargeback.. anyone with citibank? how do i do it ?

    • +5

I had to do a chargeback with Citibank recently. They were actually pretty good. Just be quite assertive with the CSR (yes you'll have to phone) and they will put you through to Disputes. They credited the funds back to me pretty much immediately while they chased up the other party. Mine was around $800 though.

      • +3

thanks! not sure why you get neg-ed, here a + :)

        • +1

IMO Citi is one of the best banks regarding charge-back. If it is a small amount like this most probably they will just waive it off your account regardless whether they are able to win the visa/mc dispute resolution. Just don't use dodgy prepaid cards for transactions that might go wrong, as their issuers tend to be pretty unreliable let alone compensating you out of their own pocket.

That said, the best move is to use a prepaid card with just enough amount so they won't even have a chance to screw you up.

        • @truetypezk: good to know ! thank truetypezk

called them and was advised that i have to wait until the transaction is not "pending" anymore to dispute it.

        • @tinx: yes that's the same for every bank. the transaction need to be cleared (actually posted to your card since the merchant can always drop it before clearing) for the bank to start the dispute process. Anyway you have no reason to be worried, credit card dispute (almost) always work in the favour of customers especially if you are with a reputable bank and have no history of potentially abusing the process.

Spent 25 minutes on the phone and got nowhere.

I have been refunded for the credit card charge. Conversation (via app help ticket subject "My promo code didn't apply") pasted below to help anyone else out with this:

Me: My friend gave me this code for up to $30 off. The screenshot shows that discount code was applied, but my credit card has been charged $18.00!

Them (someone named Roxanne): So sorry about the trouble here, <name omitted>. I've looked into this issue, and it appears that UBER580GEORGE is a promotion that was sent to intended recipients only. In this case, your account is not eligible to apply this promotion. Hope this clarifies. Don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any other concerns.

Me: Hi Roxanne. My tax invoice clearly stated $0 yet I have been charged $18. I will be passing this on to the NSW office of fair trading as well as my local ombudsman. Please understand that I had no knowledge of the intended recipients of the promotional code, it just looked like any other discount code like those that uber have offered in the past. I hope this clarifies.

Them (now named Micha): So sorry about the miscommunication regarding the promo code. The code UBER580GEORGE that you entered was not meant for uberEATS orders. As a one time courtesy, I've gone ahead and refunded the full price of $18 to your account, this may take a few days to settle on your account. Please let me know if you have any issues with this refund processing.

I have since received a refund confirmation email from Uber. Fight your battles hard, OBers!

    • +1

Lol, but that same Roxanne told me "we are unable to compensate you for this experience, we want to assure you that we take all feedback extremely seriously and will be following up with the appropriate parties to help ensure that this doesn't happen again."

      • +1

Just re-open the case and make similar threats to above. It's worth a crack and only takes a couple of minutes.

        • Thanks. I called back after the last email I got pretty much said they will not engage me anymore. After 15 minutes on the phone being told sorry and nothing could be done, I ended the call feeling more annoyed. I did drop the words ACCC and industry ombudsman too.

A few hours later I got an email indicating a one off refund.

    • Man Roxanne gave me the same response… jesus lady - no heart

      • Roxanne is probably a dude anyway

        • +1

          jesus dude - no heart

        • But seriously though, been going back and forth with them, they won't budge…. insane

      • I wonder if it is a canned/auto response or something they have been told to say.

        • I think it's generated text with our first_name substituted in, and a random girls name for the support_agent.
A human reads our messages and a human chooses a canned response from a drop down box

    • +1

      Thanks coxy

Use your reply and they said they going to issue refund as one time courtesy.

    • Cheers Coxy 2 of us in our office got the same treatment as others, then copied + pasted your response and just got this in

"Thank you for bringing this to our end, ####. Happy to sort this out for you.
As a once-off, we’re happy to refund your order up to the value of the promotion and you’ll receive a receipt showing this soon. For your reference, I sent an updated receipt. Please note that as mentioned, UBER580GEORGE is a promotion that was sent to intended recipients only and your account isn’t eligible.
Thanks for your patience and I appreciate your understanding on this matter."

    Hey all,

My mate has put together a very nice post explaining the frustration of the whole process that we all had to go through (regarding the double charge) and posted it on UberEats' wall!

If you've got a second, just check it out and drop us a like so they can see this and get off their high horse and start refunding people.

I'm having trouble getting them to refund me my $31 that was charged after the $1 charge (double charged once with discount and once without).

    Thanks!

    • What they're gonna do is call that $1.00 a pre-authorisation charge and waive that and leave you to foot the big bill. That's what they did with me. My supposed "pre-authorisation" charge wasn't $1.00 however but it was small enough for them to pretend it was a charge of that kind.

      That's pretty shady…

  • -1

Nobody in Sydney rocking up at 580 George street Uber office ? They had the audacity to charge full amount, omg. I am filing chargebacks for all Uber and Uber Eats orders from last 6 months with my bank

    • Can you wait 2 days before doing this?
I just want to get my charge back for this deal, don't want the chargeback system to get ozbargain'd while I'm doing it lol.

  • -4

Can everyone file chargeback against all Uber and Uber Eats orders and trips in last 3 months. Couple of thousands of chargebacks would mean their merchant would cut them off for any further payment processing unless they pay off or deduct those chargebacks. $50,000 is petty change for them though.

Also people who canned in the app, send 1 liner message to them every 10 min. 100000 messages in 3 days takes at least 100 agents time for next 3 days, thats lot of money

  • +1

I just received correspondence advising "Given the circumstances, I've gone ahead and issued a full refund for this order as one time courtesy. You will receive an updated receipt in your email and the difference back in your account in the next 1-3 business days." This was after following @coxy lead. Keep pushing for a refund people!

  • -2

After a session at the pub I walked into the restaurant next door and ordered a meal, got a lift home with the UberEats guy. Bargain!

  • -1

Should be easy I got a 160 credit for a trip I complained about the surcharge on…

  • How are people doing credit card chargebacks without evidence because UberEats has changed their receipts to remove all traces of any discount code being applied?

    • Mine still has the discount codes applied in the receipt in app. Using the Android version.

    • I took a screenshot. My bank said the screenshot isn't mandatory

  • I've just received the following after arguing that they charged my credit card without my authorisation, and without notification.

My name is Arg reaching out on behalf of Uber. This was passed on to me for further assistance.
Given the circumstances, I've gone ahead and issued a full refund for this order as one time courtesy. You will receive an updated receipt in your email and the difference back in your account in the next 1-3 business days.
I’ve included some resources here about the referral program and hope it’s helpful for you:
    - How can I earn free credits or rides?
    - View my applied promotions
    - Can I extend a promo’s expiration date?
Hope this helps. Please let me know if you have other questions or concerns.

    • Looks like they are just selectively picking who to give refunds to and who not to.

      • +2

Yep, I think they're discriminating against me because I'm bald. I asked if this was the case and received:

"I completely appreciate the frustration here. I am really sorry to hear that we didn't meet your expectations on this occasion and while we are unable to compensate you for this experience, we want to assure you that we take all feedback extremely seriously and will be following up with the appropriate parties to help ensure that this doesn't happen again.

We appreciate your understanding and we hope you give UberEATS another shot."

        • +1

          Hahaha, awesome!
It's great to hear that uber takes baldness discrimination seriously and are taking steps to address it. Hooray for them!

  • +5

At this point theyre just making **** up now.

From what I gather, some support staff have said that it was a limited promotion and not valid, others have said it was an expired code and some have said its for Uber only and not UberEats. Some people have even been charged twice (one for the discount and then again for full price). There is zero consistency on their end.

The only thing consistent is that the discount was accepted and applied upon checkout, and everyone here so far can confirm this. How can they still charge us after the transaction has been completed?

And why give some people refunds and an apology, and then deny refunds for everybody else and say its our mistake?

    • I managed to get a refund by threatening to go to my state consumer protection as others have done. Uber gave a refund pretty quickly then!

Think that's what everyone just needs to do. Weirdly enough the app is still showing the discount amount for me.

  • +1

I think my threats to fair trading went too far. :(

"While we value the feedback and will look to take the necessary steps to try to prevent this situation from occurring again, we aren't able to provide further adjustments to this order.

I'm afraid we can engage no further with respect to this issue.

Sent by Roxanne A. on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at 3:21:18 PM"

    • Nah, thats the same exact generic message I received from them too.

Also many others got the same response.

I have just sent some threats for Fair Trading and not receiving any response now.

      • Yes, this. Be persistent with emails.i ended up calling again too.

    Ubereats - never again

  • +1

What an absolute joke. I got a refund but it took way more effort than it should have, considering they screwed up by changing the price after the order was accepted (which I'm sure isn't legal).

    • Asked for help through the app. Ended with "we aren't able to provide further adjustments to this order."
    • Called them. They told me they could not help because I'm not eligible for that code, and I should try the online help.
    • Asked for the case to be escalated on the phone. Was given a case ID but thats it.
    • Lodged unauthorised transaction through PayPal. No reply yet.
    • Complained on their Facebook wall. Was told to ask for help through http://t.uber.com/contact
    • Lodged a case through http://t.uber.com/contact

Then finally they emailed me saying they would issue a full refund for this order as a one time courtesy. No apology.

  • Finally after sending about multiple messages in the app support and doing as others suggesting using "NSW Fair Trading" to threat them, they finally said I will get a refund.

  • +1

There's an extended wait time for chargebacks at Citi at the moment…

All sorted now though, money has been returned by bank. Am emailing through my correspondence with uber and screenshots.

I advised Uber support of the issue of an unauthorized amount being charged, repeatedly, and advised that I was going to contact QLD DFT and my bank regarding unauthorized transactions.
Definitely wouldn't bother with uber eats again.

I don't care about the money in the slightest, just had to follow through out of principle.
This is a perfect case study in how not to do customer support.

    • Just received a "quick update" 2.5 hrs after logging a chargeback..

Thank you for bringing this to our end.

Thanks for your patience and I appreciate your understanding on this matter.

I've contacted them twice mentioning it's no my fault to pay for their system glitches and they have refunded the money back to me.

  • +2

Got my refund. Took 4 messages from me through their app but the last one I mentioned was that I didn't authorise the transaction for the amount that got charged - I only authorised the amount that appeared on the app. After that, got the refund and email from Uber saying they corrected my fare.

    • +1

      Nice work Nudge!

      • +1

        Yeah cheers Deb!

  • +2

I got refunded by mentioning 'unauthorized charges' a few times.
Looks like the drones have been reprogrammed to refund automatically now.
Try one more time mentioning 'did not authorize this charge' and 'unauthorized charge'

Overall, thanks for the free lunch OP :)
No more uber eats for me… until the next coupon or referal link comes along

  • +1

Many thanks to the posters and ozbargain community!
Just got email saying I will be refunded.
I followed the steps listed and like others mentioned NSW fair trading and a credit card chargeback.

  • +1

Yeah, i got refunded as well. Left a bit of a shitty taste in my mouth though. And the burger was kinda dry too.

  • I sent one message to revert my charges because receipt was showing $0 while ordering. So they asked me for promotion code. So i replied them with receipt from app with $0 and they now refunded $30.

  • +2

Yes i just received refund 30 through my paypal. Thanks for suggesting using the word "I didn't authorise the transaction for the amount that got charged - I only authorised the amount that appeared on the app"

  • Still waiting on my paypal chargeback.

    • So Paypal did not refund my money. Screw Ubereats and Paypal. They literally stole $30 out of my account without my permission.

      • I lodged a support ticket the next day and i got a full refund 2 days later. I didn't mention the promo code, i just send them a screen shot of the coupon code applied to the order.

  • I've received a credit notification from Uber ("We corrected the fare for your ride on 4 Apr") a few days ago but it still doesn't show on my PayPal account.

  • Wow poor form from UberEATS.
