Is the Surface likely to be the m3 processor? I couldn't tell from the product page specs.

    • +5

the model number says yes, it's the m3 (DQR-00007)

    • +1

U bet. All the deets are in the specifications section. M3. 4gb ram. 128ssd. Not a whole lot of bang for ur buck but it does have a nice screen. If u want performance go the Lenovo ultrabook.

  • +1

is the surface pro 4 a good price?

    • +7

      I guess. I wouldn't buy a non upgradeable device with 4 / 128gb personally though.

      • +1

If you use it as a tablet, not a PC, it will be great.

Make sure you use Edge but.

        • Edge is the worst. At least on Normal pc. Perhaps is not as crumby on a surface

        • +7

@Gavman: I have a better than expected experience in Edge and I use it most of the time. I could say It's not the worst but we're off topic lol

For normal day to day apps like office and browsing, 4gb is good plus you get SSD so loading speed is fast you won't even notice you're using M3.

        • +3

@Gavman: In my experience, Edge is the best browser for streaming media like Netflix and iplayer

        • +2

@Gavman: I use edge for video. Supports the higher res in Netflix

        • -1

@lagur: yeh it's ok when it works. It stop functioning on my Lenovo laptop al of suddenly. Doesn't open webpages or anything. Can't get rid of it or fix it. Followed every forum on the web. Given up. Pure junk

      • +7

I run photoshop CC (10 raw batch editing) on the surface pro 3 i5 w 4gb of ram fairly easily. I think people have blown the need for 8gb of ram out of proportion. The 128gb can be upgraded if you chuck in a large micro SD card.

        • +6

          @PainToad:

Ram has no relevance to batch editing on Photoshop CC?

          Are you serious?

        • +1

          @PainToad:

I'm going to go with a firm incorrect.

          source: http://wwwimages.adobe.com/www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/e…

I do 300 photos at a time on CC (i7, 16gb, ssd). My photoshop gets ridiculously laggy. Remembering each file is 25mb. Photoshop also struggles to release memory that it has previously used, leading to full memory messages.

        • +2

          @hypie:

Interesting. Point taken. I'm a developer not the creative type so little experience with Adobe products.

        • +5

          @PainToad:

I agree multitasking is a huge benefit, but even then real world differences between the m3 and i5 (and to a lesser extent upgraded ram) are pretty insignificant (for people using word, excel and chrome/edge). Unless you horde browser windows.

"benchmark" tests show about 30% improvement. But i doubt a basic user will notice this.

        • +4

@PainToad: Strange I would thought even a developer would understand the importance of RAM on active applications …

        • As an experiment, I have run PDMS (seriously high-end 3D modelling software) pm a SP3/i5/4Gb. It worked okayish, certainly usable

        • +1

          @Rumbaar:
Definitely. Being a developer is all the more reason to understand performance bottlenecks. It's also approaching the 20th anniversary of photoshop being a poster child memory hog :p (but in their defence, everyone loves the 'undo' button).

        • +1

@PainToad: why comment on something you have no knowledge of

        • -7

Hey jerks. I understand the importance of active programs having access to memory to prevent paging. I just wouldn't have ever thought that just running Photoshop would come close to causing a memory shortage…because as I said, I haven't really used it.

        • +1

          @PainToad:

          You're a pain.

If you haven't used it, why you pretend so knowledgeable?

        • +4

@PainToad: But you still thought to reply with an uneducated answer. Maybe, as a tip, if you have no knowledge of the subject at hand, do not post a comment?

iPad is a toy to keep kids busy.

        • +3

          @yoyomablue:

As someone that owns an iPad, Surface Pro, Galaxy Tab and a plethora of cheap tablets such as the Teclast X89 and Unisurf 7" - the only tablet that gets any use since I got the Surface Pro is the Surface Pro.

That said DJI GO doesn't work on the Surface Pro and is buggy on Android, so I am forced to use my iPad to fly my drone.

I'm an Apple customer. I own an iPhone and using an iMac to type this comment and a recently retired MacBook Pro that I'm now using as an HTPC.

I retired a MacBook Pro for the Surface Pro. That's how awesome the Surface is that it competes with a MacBook Pro because it is tiers above an iPad in terms of functionality.

        • -3

@c0balt: having used both, I would take an iPad for tablet use any day. As for desktop operating system, there isn't a single Windows laptop on the market that comes close to MacBook Pro for battery, speed, reliability & resale value. Nothing.

        • @yoyomablue:

You should be an Apple salesman.

I think the votes speak very clearly as to what people think about your advice.

        • @yoyomablue:

haha yes anyone who disagrees is a sheep

      • iPad is cheaper and more usable for a tablet

        What 128GB iPad is cheaper?

Also, SP4 is a 2-in-1, iPad is a tablet. If you're only looking for a tablet, maybe SP4 is not what you're looking at anyway.

My refurbished surface pro 1 is still holding up fine into its 4th year. Really keen for the pro 5 announcement as its well overdue. At this point id just wait instead of getting the m3 model.

    • +4

This is exactly my situation, except replace SP1 with 2011 Macbook Pro and replace holding up fine with on its last legs.

    • +4

      SP1 represent!

    • I got rid of my SP1 because of overheating and unreliability. Every time I tried to use it the start up was so long I couldn't tell if it was out of batteries or if the thing had crashed.

It was the worst of both worlds between a tablet and a proper laptop.

    • Still running my SP1 with the extra battery keyboard, sizewise, not much can beat it… Full HD, 200gb microSD card.
      It'll be replaced with a surfacebook2 or SP5

    • +1

Bought my OG Surface Pro 1 when it was on sale for $500 three years ago. It's still standing strong to this day. This is coming from a person who's had bad experiences with laptops. My Surface Pro 1 is still fast and doesn't crash.

I don't know if I should upgrade to a Surface Pro 4 because my SP1 is still working well. I kind of want to install AutoCAD but it might be too much for SP1 to handle. Currently, my Photoshop CS2 works but it's a bit laggy.

    • Typing on my SP3 here. After about 3+ years of ownership, it still does everything I need it to do swiftly, though all I need it to do is just browsing, videoing and using some MS Office application. I didn't bother to upgrade to SP4 but I did bought the SP4 type cover to replace my SP3 typecover. The difference is huge, it almost made you feel like you are using a slightly different laptop.

I have no doubt SP5 will be better, but I think me and my SP3 still have more time to share :)

  • +1

bought a refurb i5/4/128gb SP4 in the 20% CYBER eBay deal a few weeks ago. really pleased with it, but it's my portable PC for uni while i have a more spacious+stronger machine at home; if it's is going to be your primary computer i'd recommend springing for the 8/256gb at least.

    • +3

Really hard to justify the price jump though!

  • +1

Incredible price for the surface. Even with a new model probably on the way, this is a bargain.

  • What's the surface like on your lap, say if you're sitting on the couch?

    • +1

I use it like this all the time, the kickstand works really well.

    • +1

Very meh. Because of the kickstand, you can't have the keyboard resting on the edge of your lap, and it isn't anywhere near as stable as a laptop. Still usable though.

    • Not good.

The kickstand was not designed for lap use.

I would look at the Samsung Tabpro S which has a more lap friendly case. As a bonus, the keyboard is included and doesn't cost $150-200.

  • The flash drive is very average speed wise.

    • But it's USB 3.0?

      • Reviews say it has good read speeds but only ~11MBps write speed which is below most USB 2.O drives

        • Thank

  • +6

Keep in mind this version of the Surface Pro 4 does NOT come with the pen.

    • How do you use the Surface with a pen? I got an SP3 that came with a pen for work, but have just been using the device like a regular ultra book.

      • +6

I'm a high school science student (yes, nothing amazing i know) right now and the pen helps a lot with annotating diagrams etc in onenote and worksheets that are online. The surface 4 pen has a much better feel than the surface 3 pen in my opinion. That might change one's perspective on the pens.

        • +1

Thanks. I'm actually using Evernote for my notes and don't annotate a lot of diagrams, so it doesn't sound like I have much of a use case anyway.

By the way, great to see that some smart students still chose to do science!

        • +1

@elektron: used an Asus 810c with Waco stylus for 3 full years daily and did not once use the pen apart from testing it worked the day I got it. I am sure there are uses but 90 percent of people need not worry

        • @Jackson: Cheers…I'm now sold on not needing the pen!

  • +1

This is from the previous post:

Looks like this model (DQR-00007) doesn't come with a "surface pen" ($90) or a "type cover" ($180) .

    • +2

      What's in the box:

      Surface Pro 4
      Surface Pen
      Power Supply
      Quick Start Guide
      Safety and warranty documents

      • +9

I think that info is incorrect. This version doesn't come with one (source: I've bought this model before)

edit: and I've just confirmed with livechat to be sure - doesn't come with the pen

        • +1

Then slug Harvey for a free pen, false advertising :)

    • None of them come with a type cover.

  • +2

Harvey Normans poorly filled specifications really annoy me. But as stated above the pen is clearly mentioned. If nothing else thats grounds to return the product if pen is not received or possibly leverage to get a pen sent to you from HN.

    • +2

Go to the description on the Harvey Norman page and scroll down. It clearly says "*Surface Pen and Type Cover are not included"

      • +5

Yes, we've established that. Also says:

        What's in the box:

        Surface Pro 4
        Surface Pen
        Power Supply
        Quick Start Guide
        Safety and warranty document

I'd say if you don't get a pen you should have grounds to ask for one or return the product.

  • +1

Nevertheless, I still think it's a great price for the Surface Pro 4

  • wow what a good price for the surface

  • Great deal thanks!

"Full HD" is not enough pixel density for 27 inches
    24 inch is okay at 1920 x 1080
    27 inch should be 2190? x ????
    - unless you're a gamer

    • Respectfully disagree. I have a 27" 1080p screen and it's fine.

    • Did you mean 3840*2160? Especially 4K UHD.

    • For 250 bucks, what do you expect? 144hz maybe too.

  • +3

Grabbed a Surface - great for my needs. Just need to wait for a deal on the Type Cover too - $200 seems a bit steep for it !

  • Should we buy this one or buy i5 with $400 more?

    • +1

Given that "$400 more" is almost 60% of the cheaper Surface's cost, I think buying the cheap one is a no brainer (as long as its performance is enough for you).

    • No.

Either wait for a sale on that model, or do without it.

Depends on how you use it. If you're using it as mainly a tablet and don't do CPU intensive things like video editing, M3 is fine. If you're doing the video editing, I don't think the 4GB i5 model is good enough either. You'd want to go to 8GB/256GB which retails for $2000 unless they cut the price recently.

  • Do I go for the surface or wait for a good deal on one with a better processor? It won't be my main PC but I will be doing some work on it…..how are these m3 processors??

    • How much is a 'good deal'?

    • Did you bite the bullet?

      • +1

I read that the M3 processor is poor so I think I might hold off. I was going to give the Mrs my iPad Pro but I think I'll hold onto it until the Pro 5 comes out and hopefully the i5/i7 Surface 4s drop in price.

Damn shame because the iPad is awful in comparison.

        • +1

Great news, I will have to hold off now as well.
The refurb surface 3s look great and fairly cheap, Tempted to jump on it.

  • +2

Just a heads up, the LG Monitor is $229 ($19 less) at MSY http://www.msy.com.au/act/fyshwick/monitor-size-27/17848-lg-…

    • +1

Does it come standard with a HDMI cable?

      • monitors don't include HDMI cables. Most they'll give is a VGA

        • I get DVI's with the samsungs at work

  • Would the surface be fine for work purposes?
    - Meetings
    - Accessing cloud files
    - General Microsoft office suite use

I am not that tech savy with laptops and computers, also what is bad about the "m3 processor"
Currently using a 2015 MBA but I want to change over to windows.

    Thanks

    • +5

More than fine for any productivity purposes. It would run really well. Expect around 6 hours battery life (more if you power save: lower brightness, turn off bluetooth/wifi etc.), excellent screen, superbly quiet and very portable.

      • Thanks mate, I will drop buy HN and have a look.

    • Yep!

  • $10 Telstra Pre-Paid SIM (Mobiles)

    • Bugger I looked last night & it was 3gb

  • Having paid 900 bucks, seeing it 700 dollars hurts.

It's the best tablet I have ever owned. Loving it!

    • Yeah, got it in Feb 2017 for 900 off HN. So cut
