Do You Really Want to Know What Coke Does to You?

A science experiment showing just what happens when Coca-Cola is swallowed will leave soft drink lovers feeling sick in the stomach.

Original Article:

We used to hang a piece of fresh meat in a glass of Coke overnight at school in science class and there would be nothing left of the meat in the morning. It also used to make copper pennies look like new. Also, Coke is believed to be an excellent bathroom cleaner. People back off from drinking Coke after watching those experiments using different soft drinks and other liquids that did strange things to metals and other substances.

Despite knowing all the facts, I still drink Coke because I just can’t actually digest the fact that how could these renowned Coke companies do this to us?
So, what do you think?

    So this is #fakenews

This is an extremely click-bait-y type article and what Coke looks like when it hits your stomach acid is meaningless, digestion is never going to be pretty.

That said, Coke is pure sugar with zero nutritional value, gives your teeth an acid bath and should be avoided at all costs. Sugar-replacement versions of Coke with Steviol have been linked to DNA mutations, and previous iterations containing aspartame are likely to be even more damaging. The human body is remarkably resilient so the rare consumption is unlikely to have noticeable negative effects, but ingesting this garbage on a regular basis will be seriously detrimental for your health.

I can leave a piece of meat out in our backyard and it too disappears overnight.

#fakenews Coca-Cola Acids Or should I say, fake olds. :P to OP.

  • I used to put my ejected baby teeth in a cup of coke. They turned green. But everything's fine in moderation.

  • I drink Sprite :P

The acid in our stomach would burn a hole in any carpet. Should we get our stomachs removed?
Drinking too much water in one go can kill you. Should we not drink water?

It's all about context. Drinking coke on occasion won't kill you. Worrying about it might, though.

Don't forget the CO2 in our atmosphere. We must stop breathing air.

It means that anything (if taken) on excess can make you sick

That isn't what Coke does to you.

Although if you drink Coca Cola all the time you will eventually cause a terrible condition where Coca Cola eats through the lining of the stomach causing painful ulcers in the stomach.

    • That's unlikely at best (and for most people, impossible). Coca cola is less acidic than stomach acid. Your stomach has homeostatic mechanisms for maintaining gastric pH. ie. if you add acid (in the form of coke) your stomach will produce less acid - it's "aiming" for a mean PH of between 2 and 3. In addition, the duodenum & jejunum (next stages of digestion following stomach) contain alkali to neutralise the acid so that your intestines are exposed to a fairly neutral pH (6-8 or thereabouts).

If you get ulcers from drinking coke, it probably means there's something else at work (eg. H. pylori colonisation of the stomach, which can be permanently treated).

However, coke is an acid that can irritate the oesophagus (which is normally pH neutral) so it can plausibly cause heartburn.

Finally it's worth noting that (as many others have) the video is faked and that it uses sulfuric acid instead of hydrochloric acid to simulate the effects of digestion on coke. Add sulfuric acid to table sugar and you'll get the same effect - the sugar will 'burn' and caramelise.

Diet coke (as opposed to 'red' coke) would result in no such reaction - it's the sugar that's reacting, not the acid.

      • The acids in our stomach are meant to stay over there only and take part in digestion. But, the acid in coke is in excess that it can cause damage to the inner lining of the stomach. Anyways, the conclusion from this discussion has led us not to quit drinking coke but don't drink it on regular basis.

Hopefully in science class they also presented evidence to show other foods which could cause similar reactions or to explain why we didn't all keel over and die after drinking a glass of Coke and have our innards as shiny as a penny and our toilet bowls crystal clear after all that Coke went through the system? No? It doesn't surprise me. The days of objectively questioning teachers is over. The socially progressives have managed to dumb down and fill to bursting our curriculum to the point that in depth knowledge is no longer respected. Instead, we have a quick look at Google and spend the next 45 minutes making the pittance of information look pretty on the iPad.

You're comparing the human body with all its enzymes, tissues and subsequent organ systems to a piece of meat in a glass.

It takes a special kind of fool to believe clickbait articles.

Thanks for the heads up mate, gonna switch to Vanilla Coke immediately

  • so you've discovered that Coke, like all soft drinks, is acidic.

    Hooray for you.

  • My parents were too poor to buy us soft drink of any description growing up. Birthdays/Xmas excepted.

I'm now forever grateful. (In the same way I thank the gods that I never took up smoking.) I'd be lucky to touch a soft drink of any description more than once a year.

Apart from the acidic nature of soft drinks, they leech calcium from your body and if my memory serves me correctly have been linked to reduced bone density.
