      What's your point?

Plastic and water go together better than steel and water..

I have this dishwasher and have been using it for over a month now. It's really good. Very well designed inside so things fit wel and just make sense (unlike some dishwashers I've used).

We had a similar white model at work (with a plastic bottom) and it lasted around 7 years after being on 3 times a day every week day (fully loaded). The plastic bottom had nothing to do with it failing.

This dishwasher was also rated number 1 at its price point by Choice.

As for the location of the factory it's made in, suggesting it's any worse than one made in Germany is irrational BS.

      • +8

He said literally nothing about either one being better, why are you so butthurt?

      • +1

It's just information on telling them apart in store. The RRP is the other tell tale.

I have a Turkish Made model too, and it's 👍

Plastic and water go together better than steel and water.

The plastic base gets destroyed by the alkaline in the dishwashing tablets. After about 5 years it start to crack.

Source: had one, chucked it, never buying a plastic base dishwasher again. Only a stainless steel base will do.

        • +1

          had one, chucked it

Because if a cracked sieve? Couldn't buy a replacement part?

Stainless Floor Bosch units come out of two different Factories, the more expensive ones are German made (normally labeled on the front of the unit "Made in Germany") the others are Made in Spain.

The Spanish models are implied to last longer than the Turkish and then the same is implied again for the German models.

Regardless a Brand, most people will find Bosch units overall, quieter than most units in the same or similar price point. Bosch also hands options on almost every model that make them very effective on speed of a good wash cycle as well as loading options for a "Half Load" on most models. Making Bosch a great choice at almost any price point.

what if the dishwasher stages a coup? can we hold a referendum to take control of the kitchen back?

  • Where is the plastic/stainless floor? Was it the floor inside the washing compartment or the floor outside the dishwasher that touch the ground?

    • +1

Outside, you'd have to tip it up to see.

    • +1

It's the floor inside the dishwashing compartment. There is nothing wrong with having a plastic floor.

    • Anyone know if this model - Bosch sms50d08au - has stainless steel floor or plastics? Can't find the info anywhere and the photo is not clear enough. The price is a bit more but hopefully cost less in the long run, as 'worker' commented below. Thanks.

Have had this dishwasher for 4 months now. No issues. You can practically stack the dishes with very little space and they'll still get clean.

Might be worth getting Appliances Online to price match as they'll deliver for free and take away your old machine. Installation is very easy.

  • My 15 year old Bosch dishwasher needs a new filter ($55) and could do with a new cutlery holder $30. Who knows how long it has. Should I just buy another one? Seems a bit of a waste but I would kick myself if it had an expensive failure after I bought a new filter.

Most dishwasher will range in height between 815mm - 820mm at their lowest (freestanding jumps to 845mm - 850mm with lid on, which is removable for an underbench installation). Width is pretty much standard at 1 or 2mm shy of 600mm. Depth does vary with unit depending on lid still being on, but units are normally pretty squard of between 580mm and 600mm (not taking it to consideration the curved handle that is on some models eg. Bosch, Dishlex etc

        • Don't forget to take into account the size of the hoses and the aquastop if it has one.

        • @dasher86: thanks dasher

  • I have never had a dishwasher before. How do we install this one? Do i need to hire a plumber to do it? Thanks

    • +7

It isn't hard to DIY, but I think technically you are meant to get a plumber.

Check under your kitchen sink and see what is already there. At a minimum you need:

-Somewhere to connect the water inlet hose for the dishwasher. Dishwasher inlet hoses are normally identical to washing machine hoses. Under my kitchen sink for example where the hot and cold water pipes come in at the wall there is a T junction on the hot water pipe that allows a 'washing machine tap' to be installed. Something like this: https://www.reece.com.au/bathrooms/products/laundry/laundry-…

-Somewhere to connect the dishwasher drainage hose. Under my sink, the PVC piping has a small ribbed connection for the drainage hose, like this one: https://www.bunnings.com.au/caroma-50mm-white-combination-s-…

-A powerpoint to plug the dishwasher in to power (duh)

-Physical space for the dishwasher to fit

If you have all the above (or you are confident that you can install what you don't have yourself) you should be fine. I've replaced a couple of dishwashers over the years, but in both cases all the required fittings were already there.

Edit: probably should put a dish-claimer (sorry) here- if you DIY and something goes badly wrong then you will probably have issues with your insurance company knocking back claims etc. If in doubt, just pay a professional to do it- much safer than taking advice from randoms on the internet ;-)

      • Does the water inlet hose need a teflon tape around it? I never placed teflon on my washing machine taps…

    • +1

Do i need to hire a plumber to do it? Thanks

Maybe not. But if you're not handy, don't try it yourself. There are heaps of ways to get it wrong.

      • waste pipe needs to have its highest point above the sink's drain hole, so many people get this wrong.
      • waste pipe needs to attach to the drain before the u-bend.
      • water supply needs to tap-off the cold outlet… changing a tap needs a plumber, so if you don't already have one, can't do it yourself.
      • attaching the water supply might need plumbers tape, a plumbers wrench, and knowing how to fit a brass fitting to a brass tap without damaging the tap
      • electrical point only an electrician can install, and because it's near water is very dangerous if done incorrectly

If any of that didn't make sense, don't try doing it yourself, hire a plumber.

      • The waste pipe tips are good- if you don't install it as noted here you can potentially get waste water from the kitchen sink back-flowing into the dishwasher.

And agreed 100% about the electrical point- don't DIY this.

Re water supply- generally you do want if off the cold tap (if I was doing a new install this would be my preference). In our house it was off the hot tap, and this is okay for us as our current dishwasher is able to have the water supply from the hot or cold (confirmed by the manufacturer). However, when I was shopping around for a dishwasher I noticed that most of the main brands / models stated that the supply should be cold water only.

  • Have it. Recommend it. Only downside is no Timer display to show minutes left, but other than… works perfectly fine. Have had it for 8 months odd now.

Got an appliance installer to do it and he charged me $160 (with invoice) in Sydney which I thought was pretty good value (pm me for details). Took him about an hr or so as he had to trim the wood from the sides, un-install the previous dishwasher and dispose the old one.

I'd definitely use an installer if you don't know what you're doing.

  • dishwasher! :(
when would the Bosch washing machine bargain come again!
going to move next month, come on give me a bargain on Bosch washing machine.

  • paid the same price for a Plastic one two weeks ago

  • +1

For anyone wondering this dishwasher will cost you more in the long run.

Having a plastic tub is cheaper for the manufacturer however it is not as efficient when it comes to heating and drying the dishes, it will use "roughly" 200w more per cycle. The cycle has to be at a lower temperature for longer to get the same cleaning results, plastic does not retain heat as well and also makes the drying process longer, if your dishwasher is connected to a hot water connection you run the risk of the plastic cracking earlier than it will in the long term.

The plastic tubs also allow a lot more noise than the stainless tub.

Just the facts not dissing the deal.

    • Thanks bra, ill skip it then

  • I have this and have issues intermittently.

    1. It goes through stages where you'll turn it on and it will just shut off randomly. You might do this 10 times in a few days and then it will work for weeks without issue.

    2. It constantly complains about no water or not being able to clear the drain, even though it does clear the drain. Weird.

Not saying you shouldn't buy it but it's not perfect :)

    • I haven't had any of these issues. Sounds like you either have a faulty unit or something else in your environment is causing issues.

  • Before you get too excited, note that JB don't deliver everywhere e.g. my post code. Please post if anyone is successful with a price match somewhere else (neil - cheers, will look at Appliances Online).

    • +1

I got appliances online to do it for $580 with postage to regional VIC (which JB HIFI didn't cover)

  • I also bought one of these in the last deal. One of the best recent purchases I made, it works very well.
I installed it myself by carefully reading the instructions. It replaced an existing Whirlpool dishwasher that was only working on warmer days! The guy that delivered the new unit took this old unit away for $10.

  • I picked this up a little while back from HN for $498 with 6 months worth of Finish products via redemption. Best appliance around!

  • Many thanks OP!!

Needed a replacement dishwasher, and have been searching last few weeks. Purchased this last night. Cheers!! :-)

  • I just got Appliances Online to match that price via Live Chat. Quick and simple. Will arrive on Monday. JB was quoting 5 - 15 days for delivery so this works better for me.

    • How much less did you get from appliabce online??

      • +1

They matched it, so $568 including delivery to Brisbane.

  • Bought on Thursday (AO price match), delivered yesterday to Melbourne and I installed it in under an hour (hardest part was enlarging the existing holes as the anti flood valve is quite large - rectangular cross section ~7x10cm).

To remove the top, there are two white plastic on the front just under the lid. Use a flathead screwdriver to push the tab in while lifting the top and repeat for the other side.

Question though: how do people secure these under the kitchen bench? There aren't any screw holes I could find.

    • Done the same, was hesitant of the plastic base thing at first then checked my other brand dishwasher and same thing, so maybe common. You shouldn't need to secure a dishwasher, like a fridge. AO good if you want to pay by amex.

      • It's too light! Every time I open the door, the dishwasher alters forward towards me. The dishwasher I replaced was screwed into the underside of the counter but the Bosch doesn't seem to have screw holes.

        • Probably need either or combo of 2 things not to move which i have with existing setup that is tight space all sides of unit and soft open doors. Im guessing main culprit is top space, need a panel or other diy fixing there.

    • Do you still get the Bonus $100 of Finish Products? Have you looked into the bonus as it seems to reduce the price a further $100?
      What is the standard warranty?

    • Do you need to wrap teflon around the inlet valve??
