Sony 65" KDL65W850C Full HD Smart TV - $1295 (or $1230 on TheGoodGuys eBay) @ The Good Guys

1550

28/4 just spotted on GG website that the deal runs until 1 May, and the TV is showing in some stores (SE Qld).

Look, I know it's not UHD, but it's cheap for a Sony 65" … isn't it?

4 x HDMI, 2 x USB inputs.

Happy big screen shopping. Have set the end date for this deal as Sunday, but it might be sooner / later.

or $1,230.25 using C5AUS via eBay Link

    This made me lol: https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinfuriating/comments/66hjxl/m…

Not really relevant, but there's a lot of talk on picture quality in this post.

  • How is using this with an iPhone vs android?

    • -1

Don't bring this into that argument pls

Really good TV, works really well with the XBONE. Excellent buy. Be smart, buy FHD.

  • I wonder how something like this compares to my 7 year old Panasonic 46" Plasma. In the shops, I still found moving items on screen fuzzy compared to Plasma's. Ok, the more expensive UHD screens looked great but not the lower end ones. I found my Plasma much better (for sports). Blacks are also much blacker. Is it just me or am I right?

      You are most likely right.

FYI, the 850C is a 2015 model, so it's 2 generations behind the new 2017 models.

The Sony model lineup is as follows:
    ***E = 2017
    ***D = 2016
    ***C = 2015

    Review for those interested: http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/sony/w850c

This is a discontinued model, so will soon be gracing the newest Soniq TV near you (Soniq models are 1 generation behind when sourcing their screens from the big brands).

My sister got this TV a year ago. I've installed KODI on it and she and her family love it. For the money, I think it's not a bad product. Nice design, and it's a Sony :)

    • how did you install kodi on it?

      • From the google play store, there's no hacking involved, just like installing any other app.

        • Ah nice can you send me a PM have a couple of questions

  • -5

    $1200 Fly Screen .. ew
My Rule is 55" 4k and up
its just silly in 2017 to settle for 1080p at 65" …shudder

    • +8

Yeah, all that 4K content, it's awesome.

      • -6

It's not just that tho .. having a screen 65" big sitting 3m away
I can see the difference instantly .. but thats me … Check it out in person before you fork out your money is all I'm saying

    • Much like the rule of 1440p and up for a 27" monitor?

  • +1

This is nit a SMART TV. This is ANDROID TV and that's match better then smart tv
Compare to Hisense 4K I would prefer Sony fullHD just because of Android on the board

    • Lol and i'm nit writing this on a SMARTPHONE. This is an IPHONE and that's match better than smartphone.
Compare to Samsung S8 I would prefer Apple iPhone 3G just because of iOS on the board

      • +3

        then*

      • in that case you are comparing Iphone and Nokia 3110 just because of beautiful case of the nokia and cheap price

        really lol

  • People are suggesting a Hisense 4k over a Sony 1080p… lol

    • I wouldn't.
We have 2 Hisense TVs outside on the deck, both died under 3 years old.

      • Should not be a problem with the 3 year warranty. I wish my almost 6yo Hisense died or gave me a good reason to replace it. The remote was crap, but I am using a universal instead. The firmware is crap but who cares if you can run a media centre instead.

I have this TV so if anyone has question on it… Feel free to ask away!

    • How long does it take to turn on? Do all the menus navigate quickly?

  • damn, I bought this TV from them 3 weeks ago when it was $200 more :(

You don't need 4K tv if you do not plan to have 4K movies in the future. There are currently no 4K channels in Aus and will not be for coming years. 4 k tries to upscale 1080p full hd graphics to 4K which is not necessary as 1080p full hd Tv is really good at showing 1080p content. 4K TVs are like bluray players - people don't have the content.

    • +1

There are no free-to-air 1080p channels either.

      • +1

Yes you are right. There are no full hd 1080p. There is only hd channels (720p).

        • +1

Yes, only a handful of 720p/1080i - the rest are in SD. That's why I can't believe people spending big bucks on 4k even today, not to mention the early adopters from a few years back.

To me, the right time to buy a 4k TV will be when:

          1) there is plenty of 4k material is available - similar to FHD content today
          2) it can be accessed easily and inexpensively
          3) OLED TV's have come down in price quite a bit

        • +1

          @elektron: totally agree.

I understand if you have a pc, 4K monitor will actually make a big difference because a pc can give the output in 4k resolution. But in case of tv, when there is close to no 4K content (no channels, movies), it is useless to but a 4K tv.

        • @wolfpack2016:

Spot on - 4k monitors actually do make a lot of sense, as you can create your own 4k content on a PC by having 2 windows side-by-side. Not to mention that you sit a lot closer to a monitor than to a TV.

Is this full HD TV better then the Aldi UHD 65 inch ?

    • +2

      Seriously?

      • +2

This is how stupid it's become, UHD was so expensive when it first came out, people by default just think it makes any panel stunning / the best, etc.

No 4k, UHD, HDR can make any LED/LCD look as good as the last Panasonic plasmas (4 years old now). Enough said. The tech is rubbish. Lipstick on a pig. Buy 1080p until you can afford OLED.

  • If you intend to watch FTA channels and HD content a 4K TV isn't going to give you its full benefits. Just go with the best 1080P TV you can get.
If you play plenty of 4K games such as the latest games which are already released on the PS4 Pro then it's a no brainer in going for a 4K TV.

Once you go 4K you don't go back to 1080P

  • Can you "Side Load" apps on these Sony Android TV's?

    • +1

Yep. Can mount any normal USB drive containing some APK's and access them with most file managers.

  • This vs hisense 4k

    https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/hisense-65-inches164cm-uhd-le…

Bought one from here, with C5AUS code. Only 3 left now. Thanks.

      • +1

I caved and clicked purchase. Only 1 left now.

Was going to get a 65" Hisense 4k for my parents but realised the content isn't there yet and they wouldn't really be using it to its fullest anyway.

But still this should be a good size upgrade from their current 47" LG from 2009.

        • LOL… I umm'ed and ahh'ed for 2 days, with my other half telling me not to buy it because our Pana 50" plasma is still going strong in our home theatre.

But we were on holiday at Easter and the place we stayed at the GC had one of these and I was impressed with it. A bit slow with the menus and didn't have any proper apps installed (though had enough grunt to play x265 files from USB very smoothly through the default video app) but the size of the screen impressed (corners were a bit uneven with lighting and you have to cancel all of the auto picture options to stop the constant change in brightness). Still couldn't say no to it when the TGG deal ended and I saw the ebay videopro link - which is now gone but credit to TIPU showing the sony website still offering the cheap price with free shipping (ebay C5AUS saved me another $64 :-)))

Now have to move the 50" plasma to the bedroom - a bit too big for it but the PQ of this unit is still amazing, and better than the Sony other than size.

PS just received an email that the TV has been sent, looking forward to it.

        • This Videopro deal actually worked out better for me than TGG deal would have as the nearest store with stock is a fair drive away from me for click&collect and the $60 shipping would have canceled out the C5AUS saving anyway.

So thanks to Tipu and yourself for bringing this to my attention:)

And I should also add that while my above reasons led to me choosing this over the Hisense 7 series 4k, the cheaper price may have also played abit of a factor….

Oh who am I kidding.. it was the MAJOR Factor. LOL;)

        • Mine was delivered today. Unfortunately the screen is not in great condition. Numerous scratches. And there is a big vertical scratch with accompanying dead pixels which is quite noticeable…. bugger :(

Looks like I'm going to have to contact Videopro and sort out a replacement.

          Fingers crossed this goes well…

        • Received replacement yesterday. All good. No scratches on this unit thankfully. Video Pro were also very easy to deal with.

  • Is anyone else placed order yesterday afternoon and still waiting to receive pick up email?

    • I ordered one in store yesterday (WA) and they said the TV's are on back order. I asked if the stores backorder will definitely be filled and the sales guy seemed confident it would. I'm not so confident.

    • I am getting mine delivered. How big is the box on this and would you have to transport it upright to be safe if you are going to do pick up?

      • I think LCD's are fine to transport lying down. I transported my last LCD lying down (but it was only 10 mins drive) and it was fine.

I just called the store to get an ETA on stock. They said Sony have a shipment coming end of May!! So I have to wait till then. Wonder how long it would have taken if I bought it through the eBay store?

Does anyone know what the returns policy is if you buy through eBay? Can you return to a local store, or do you have to ship it back to some central location?

        • Got mine delivered today! Bought from ebay store. Looking forward to unpacking it. For those planning to transport it, the box measures 155x94x23 cm. Unless you have a truck or trailer it will be hard to transport it any other way than flat. The box does have pictures that it should be transported upright though I have read that that is more important for plasmas.

        • +2

Got a phone call from the store this afternoon saying the TV was ready to be picked up!! So happy I didn't have to wait till the end of May.

Plugged it in tonight and initially it just had a picture of small coloured dots floating around the screen. I waited for about 2 mins and then decided it must be stuck, so I pulled the power and tried again. Second attempt went better, with the dots only staying on screen for about 30 seconds and then the android "updating apps" screen appeared. Took ages but eventually got to the TV setup screen and got free to air channels scanned in.

So far, only watched about 30 mins of content but it absolutely blows the pants off the Aldi 65" TV that I bought in their March special.

@x d: FYI: able to fit 3 in my Mazda CX5

        • @karnage1020: Unpacked ours yesterday. Installed SPMC (a version of Kodi) off the Playstore and couldn't be happier myself. Blocked all updating apps option but did see that there is one OS update available. Not sure if I want to bother with it as it is running quite smoothly at the moment.

Happy that it is also able to transmit Dolby digital sound to our receiver through optical SPDIF.

I ran across a post somewhere where somebody calibrated the screen and posted the numbers for manual input. Can't find it again now but pretty happy with the quality nevertheless.

        • @x d: I'll have to check out SPMC. I play files directly off my server via Emby, but it would be nice to have the slick UI of Kodi.

So far, I have nothing but good things to say about the TV. The speakers are actually pretty decent (for a TV) and the picture quality when watching SD content is actually more than adequate. As I mentioned previously, I originally bought the Aldi (Bauhn) 65" 4K (which I will be taking back this weekend) and the extra $396 that I spent on the Sony is (in my opinion) well and truly worth it.

        • @karnage1020: Don't know much about EMBY but just looked at it. Looks like it's similar to Plex.

SPMC is an android specific version so should be optimised. I stream my files off my wireless network using Shared windows directory directly, with no transcoding. Plays x265 files with surround sound well with no stuttering, though this might show the grunt of the CPU/GPU on the Sony as on my MXQ 4K android media boxes, SPMC stutters with these files (for these I use ES File explorer and feed the files to MX player).

The size of the screen has one negative. Older XVID media files look quite ugly :-(

  • I must be missing something. So many people here are saying there is no 4K content. Does Netflix's 4K content not count? I know its bitrate isn't the same as bluray but it still looks a lot better than their non 4k content.

    • I only have a basic Netflix subscription, so I have no access to the 4k content. I'm assuming other people are in the same boat as me.

Also, I've just assumed that there aren't that many 4k shows on Netflix. Is there a list of what is 4k on Aussie netflix?

  • As karnage1020 has pointed out, Netflix has very few 4k titles. Generally, very few titles are shot in 4k, and only a small percentage of those are available on Netflix.

The other point is that it'll be years before NBN is available in my area, so 4k is not very relevant to me at the moment.
