Westpac Altitude Platinum/Black: 60K/80K Qantas or Altitude; $3K/ $5K Min Spend; $150/ ($195 AF First Year)

210

Westpac is still offering co-branded Amex cards, though I don't know how long they'll stick around. Note also that you can take the signup bonus as Qantas points and then switch to altitude rewards (see item 2).

Platinum min spend: $3000 in 90 days.
Black min spend: $5000 in 90 days.

Platinum annual fee: $150.
Black annual fee: $195 in the first year (then $395).

Platinum earns: 2p/$ on Amex, 1p/$ on Visa (Altitude option); 1p/$ on Amex, 0.5p/$ on Visa (Qantas option).
Black earns: 3p/$ on Amex, 1.25p/$ on MC (Altitude option); 1.5p/$ on Amex, 0.625p/$ on MC (Qantas option).

Altitude points convert 2:1 into Velocity, 2.5:1 into Asia Miles and KrisFlyer.

Exclusions:

Existing Westpac customers who currently hold an Altitude Platinum or Altitude Black credit card, or who have held one in the last 12 months, are not eligible for this offer. The bonus Altitude Points or Qantas Points will be credited to your points balance within 12 weeks after the eligible spend criteria is met.

  • Do they still have the first year free if already a westpac account holder?

    • +1

It's gone from my Westpac online account. ANZ is the better option for $0 and 75k pts. Glad I jumped on the Westpac deal earlier in the month.

      • the earlier one was 50K wasn't it .. so now looks like its a reduced fee one now but you get 80k ?

        • 50k for $0, $2500 spend, but Needed to have an existing online account to access offer. I still had online access after cancelling altitude card 4yrs ago.

        • Damn, i recently got a Westpac one for 50k card. Would have prefered the 80k one with $150 as I can sell those points for 1c per. Would have been $150 better off.

  • Why are the amex reward cards disappearing?

Due to regulatory changes on interchange fees (now capped at 0.8% for all cards). Therefore AMEX cards no longer provide banks higher fees collected from merchants (whilst AMEX remains expensive to service), so banks cutting them loose.

The higher fees merchants have been paying on Amex cards is what allows the Amex companion card earn double the rewards of the Visa card. With this change coming up, we are definitely going to see banks making changes as they wouldn't be willing to pay for the double points without the double fees.

        • Thanks for making my dribble into plain English, you make a good companion :p

        • @freelife:

          :)

That article you linked is one of the few times I've been quoted on press… I work for RateCity….

  • 10K more points than https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/298462 but $500 more expense, good

  • Will they axe the AMEX like ANZ?

    • Unlikely in the next 6 months given that they just started this offer. ANZ had already stopped offering AMEX many months before the AMEX cut date (which is July this year).

    • Who knows? I saw an article on AusBT suggesting they might split the product up: https://www.ausbt.com.au/aussie-banks-rethink-credit-card-po…

As danielh suggests above - I believe existing westpac customers can usually get $0 annual fee in first year. It's free to open and hold a westpac esaver account (do this first before signing up)

You have to click on a particular existing customers link found here half way down the page : https://www.westpac.com.au/personal-banking/credit-cards/

And here is the fine print:
"^$0 annual card fee in first year for existing Westpac customers promotion: The first year annual card fee waiver is available to existing Westpac customers who apply for a new Low Rate or Altitude credit card by clicking on the Westpac customers 'Apply now’ button via westpac.com.au between 21st April 2017 and 28th June 2017. The first annual card fee will be debited on the 12 month anniversary of the first transaction on your account and annually thereafter."

Hope that saves someone $195. Could be worth confirming with the online chat.

$0 annual fee has gone from my online account now…..this offer is it I think.

    • Given the next condition talks about the reduced fee for the Altitude Black, I would guess the annual fee waiver now only applies to the vanilla Altitude card which has no bonus points and a worse earn rate.

    • Holding the Westpac eSaver account is free, but it also forces you to have a transaction account attached which has a $5 monthly fee unless you deposity $2000+ monthly..

  • good card..

i've had it for 4 years now. got 100k on signup back then.

    • Yeah I got the 100K last year but paid the full AF. 80K for $195 is pretty good.

Call their cancellation department, say you will cancel the card and move to ANZ (given their current offer) - I've never had to pay annual fee.

But I do spend about $5-6k on the card monthly.

        • Do you pay it off monthly

        • @Stahh: pay it off as soon as I get my wage. Don't wait till a statement. Have never paid a cent interest.

        • Nab refused this to me recently. Told them to cancel the card and suck it.

Ive now appliee to the ANZ deal.

I'd been spending approx. 10k/month too

        • @Suspect420:

          Crazy NAB.. their loss!

        • @bkx3virgin:

Yep. Couldn't believe it to be honest.

Even have a savings account with them with a substantial amount.

I was asked a question that I think resulted in this outcome. "Do you see the NAB as your primary bank?" Answer was absolutely not. I'm a free spirit and loyal to no business.

        • @Suspect420: Haha i've had that question asked of me when i asked them to wavy my yearly fee. I always answer "well it depends on if you can get rid of the yearly fee or not" haha….

  • Has anyone tried or been successful as an existing long term westpac customer asking them to waive the fee ?

  • Has anyone recently applied for this card? I had applied online on Wed night and got conditionally approved for the altitude black, but haven't heard from Westpac yet nor did I get an email for my application ref number, though I did take a screenshot so have that number handy, but just keen to know does Westpac take really long to respond or do I need to call them and check?

    • My experience late last year was that it took a long time, though I don't remember the exact length. Maybe worth checking your spam folder and giving them a call though.

      • My card finally arrived. Took more than a month. Gosh!

  • Does anyone know regarding the travel insurance for the Black card, you are only eligible for insurance if you spend $500 per person before the trip. If you link this card to Pay Pal and pay with Pay Pal to avoid the processing fees for the flights are you still eligible for travel insurance? Many thanks.
