It's kinda sad that it's still cheaper to import a laptop from China than it is to work into a store or even online in Australia.

  • Do these review well?

    • +1

I've been reading about these for he past few days .. and reviews suggest very good quality for the price. The main negative is that it comes loaded with Chinese windows 10. You can change the language to english but a few menu options apparently are still in Chinese.

The windows 10 license is apparently only for Chinese, so if you want an english version you need to factor in purchase of that too.

      • I've got the 12.5 inch and there's an easy way around the fact it's all in Chinese. Has been running great as a laptop and use it as my daily.

The 13.3 inch is bit harder to recommend considering what's out in the shops here with processors being either 7th gen or 6th gen i5. Check your local Good Guys or harvey Norman , and check specs to see what i mean.

    Dear Xiaomi,
Please stop making good, affordable products.

Bought one about two months ago. Used it every day with not complaints. However, need to format and install a English copy of Windows for best experience. The Chinese WinOS at start up was a bit tricky. Great value if you can get rid of the Chinese Windows.

    • Me too mate. Easy least except the first boot as you said. Just dropped down menu a few times til i figured out how to get it to get past the setup into windows. Have been very happy with it

    • or just learn some Chinese :-)

I bought the 13.3 one from banggood. It arrived after 9 days, not bad. I got it when it was 932 AUD. I've been using it for 3 weeks. It's great and I am still amazed at how cheap the laptop is.

  • Bought this from gearbest for $950. Excellent display and build quality.

  • What are these like for video editing/cad work? Mainly solidworks.

I've bene on a macbook air for 3 years and have been looking at Macbook's/Pro but they're $3k

Perhaps I'm better off going back to Windows based. I need the portability of a light laptop as I travel for work.

    • For those things it will be much stronger than a MacBook Air. But it's still a mid teir speced computer, there is a i7 version in the same size. If you require portability look for some thing in the i7 + 16 gig of ram+ ssd+ dedicated graphics range from dell or even metabox should be able to find some thing for about 2k or less. MacBook pros they are decent I used one for rendering, video and photo editing for a couple years I recently got rid of it. I found using OS X for these things to be fiddley like it's always trying to hold your hand, installing windows fixed all those problems. So I would say if your software you use has a windows version go with windows but when rendering in particular the system was pegged close to 100% usage on the CPU and the machine was getting to 100 degrees and throttling its self. Macs look nice but ultimately you are paying a huge amount for the looks and the warranty ( and don't get me wrong I love their warranty my MacBook Pro was replaced twice for free).

As for this one all reviews seem good the quality is great performance wise it's good battery life is said to be a little lacking at around the 3-5 hour range. But generally in every aspect it beats an air. I have no complaints with mine for the price paid I could buy a second and break even as opposed to buying a MacBook. The Chinese os is the biggest stumbling block for most but just use a spare windows key or even buy one of the cheap 10$ keys from one of the digital key shops and reformat the system and do a fresh install. You can get driver packs for these laptops online so every thing will work just as good with the English operating system.

You can actually pick up the 12.5" model for $480USD (roughly 640AUD) on GearBest at the moment.

Be aware that 'refreshed' models of both these laptops are being released soon with the next generation of processor, but I don't think the performance bump will be worth the price different. Great price for a great machine.

    • thanks .. updated post

    • +1

Bang on. Has new 7th gen core m3 that has a 15% bump in performance. Not worth the few hundred more they are charging though as you said, at least not yet. GeekBuying has it in stock already i think

    Good price but "under restocking"

    • +1

Wow .. that was quick. Wasn't "under restocking" when I picked one up. Hopefully I managed to get one that will be shipped soon.

      • I kept refreshing and all of a sudden it said 1 left so I grabbed it. Thanks op!

      • You received yours yet?

        • Mine arrived a few days ago

        • Yep got mine yesterday. Blew away the Chinese windows and installed Win10 Pro and so far so good. Cheers.

  • is anyone using MacOS on these.. seen hacks online last time but how stable is it and does everything work ??

    • +1

Drivers would be your biggest concern. I didn't think you could put OS X on laptops.

Just a question. What would you need to run on OS X that you can't find a Windows alternative for? Not an attack. Just asking.

      • Yes drivers always are on hackintosh mods.. did a quick google search last time, found you can put it on this Mi notebook but you need a wireless dongle
and i think some users are having sound issues.. but it can be done.

I need a MacOS notebook sometimes in the industry i work in I already have a macbook air but need another device.. might just pickup a used one off ebay.

  • whats the Xiaomi warranty support like in Oz??

    • no such thing..

      • So if it breaks what can you do?

        • +2

          Ozbargain a new one

        • @googleyahoo69: Damn, I'd rather pay more for some warranty.

  • Too bad these don't come in black, silver looks too dated imho

    • I believe there is a gold variant. But you could just get a simple case off eBay or where ever, kinda like the MacBook ones.

Picked up the last of the cheaper priced ones on eBay this morning as part of the 20% of sale for $768. Wish there was more stock, would have loved to post that bargain. Can't wait to use this laptop. Screen rivals MacBook Pro and XPS13 for sRGB coverage.

    • $768 is so good price, which seller did?

      • -1

        Amaysim.

        • -1

calling BS. i searched for the laptop a few days ago among all the 20% off companies. only 1 was selling it but at a very high price.

also, amaysim is a phone network provider and even an ebay store happened to be named "amaysim" it was not apart of the 20% off deal so yea, you're full of it.

        • @babolimp:
Who the crap would lie about that? And what would the point be? Here's a screenshot.

You are lucky, and it is hard to find it anymore.

Great price for the i5 Model,

Currently using a m5 12.2" I got for about 750AUD back in September.

    My major setbacks:
Chinese Windows 10. Had to purchase a key and install English OEM.
Backlight Keyboard only has two options: on / off
Not Touchscreen - Looks so good that you think it is, and coming from using a work touch screen laptop. If you havent used a touchscreen you probably wouldnt mind it.
Not a performance laptop (dont try to run CS and expect a clean experience) but you get what you pay for, livable.

    My favourites:
USB C Charging. Matches my phone cable, only carry one charger around.
Build Quality: Amazing, reminds me of Apple back in 2008 days.
Weight distribution compared to an air makes it better to hold and carry around.
Clean - no logo on the front.

    • Great quick review of the laptop.

I've seen reviews that the speakers are at the bottom, I would have assumed that would be a setback. Clearly it's not as bad as it seems as its not on your list of setbacks. That was what was holding me back from getting it.

      • Actually the speakers them self are pretty decent. They are not the same quality sounds as an external set of speakers but in terms of built into the device these are some of the better sounding speakers that I have owned. Definitely beating my MacBook, asus g752 and metabox that I have.

  • Anyone know how long does the battery last with general web browsing and youtube?

  • No stock at all.

  • OP: Listed price is 659.99USD which makes it a bit cheaper for those with the Citibank Debit card or 28 degrees card.

Xiaomi keeping making some awesome gear, I hope they continue to be competitive in the market and make some simple changes like better English language support!

  • Got one - $875AUD with Bankwest mastercard. Nice

  • It seems to be back up to $699 USD now.

    • Thanks. Marked as expired now price has gone back up.

  • wow.. how do i keep missing the deals. i've been checking ozbargain daily for a deal on this freaking laptop.

  • Hopefully Banggood can do this deal again.
