  • Do we need that much omega 3?

    • I take it to keep myself sharp. :) I don't get to eat a lot of seafood, so this is a good supplement for me.

      • It's one essential vitamin that the body can't make and isn't easy to get from regular food.

Have an egg then. Eggs are around 70mg of omega3.
Vitagummies have very little omega 3, 32mg per serve and doctors say you should have at least 500mg.
I remember reading Choice, saying these gummies have such small amounts of vitamins etc that they are really just a lolly, a teaspoon of sugar per serve.

Holy hell. I am really into my vitamin supplements and a big believer in the value of Omega 3 (DHA & EPA) but these are the WORST I have ever seen in my life !!

          32 DHA
          10 EPA

          How bad is that?

Well my 4 year old daughter has been taking Omega 3 since 6 months old. Her "child" fish oils contain the following:

          133 DHA
          28 EPA

Hers arent junky gummies either but rather a soft gel with oil inside.

What PVA says is dead right, these are just a lolly, probably a poor tasting one at that.

The Checkout also did a small segment on them. For 500mg of Omega-3, you need to eat 24 per day. The whole bottle ($1) contains the approx. the same as 2 1000mg Omega 3 pills (around 30c total).

I'd beg to differ whether this is a deal.

        • @AnneFagit: I new I saw it somewhere but couldnt remember. Thanks.

Thanks for the deal but the amount of sugar in these makes them a bad choice to buy.

Yeah I got some of the multi vitamin ones and they are sweet and covered with sugar :( and I was doing keto..

    • Yeah, it is pretty sweet. So i tend to think of it as "treat of the day", i don't take anything else sweet besides this.

    • +3

LOL. With all the fast food bargains posted on OzBargain, youre worried about the sugar in these small things?

  • +2

we have the multivitamin ones - lots of sugar and has anyone noticed the strong repulsive smell?

    • +1

That would be the rancid fish oil.

      • yep, i stopped popping fish oil capsules

    • Yeah they smell bag once I finish them I'm done with these things

  • +3

@ 66% carbs, these are basically lollies.

Your glass is 2/3 empty. Why the anger?

      • Why the assumptions?

      • +2

No, he's right. As far as Omega 3 supplements go these are rubbish. They are 1/4 the strength of my daughter's kids fish oil capsules and hers are 1 softgel per serving lol.

No hate, it's cheap, just be aware as far as Omega 3 supplements go, these are almost nutritionally useless considering our bodies have some difficulty absorbing 'supplement based' DHA/EPA. It will absorb the sugar though.

  • A little bit of sugar makes the medicine go down.

  • Slight tangent, are the same issues identified here applicable to other gummie products such as multi s and vitamin c?

    • +1

It's all about the active ingredients, for Omega 3 fish oil that means DHA and EPA. While not something I'd recommend to any adults who can stomach better alternatives, gummies supplements will vary and some are certainly a lot better than this. Whether it's Omega 3 or any vitamins each brand will vary. Generally you get what you pay for in supplements so look for sales on the bigger brands. Ethical Nutrients are a great brand (but $$ and I rarely see them on sale), Swisse is a mid range brand and can regularly be found on sale. The cheaper the brand, the more you need to take to meet your daily intake assuming that's your goal (otherwise why buy them at all) and more expensive brands will use higher quality (and more absorbable) forms.

I skip the lot (bar the occasional Ethical Nutrients) and buy from overseas via iHerb. Much more potent supplements, much more absorbable forms at half the price of anything locally, generally they are made in USA but some come from China so that's worth knowing before buying too.
