  • Cheaper here after cashrewards.

    • +6

how much cheaper is it? Your deal is $25.17 + $4.55
Also Zapals is super slow at postage (7-45days minimum plus long wait for shipping) so I don't think the other deal is better
and doesn't this deal allow cashrewards?
this deal also has local warranty

      • +7

Funny part is that Zapals own Shoppingsquare. You'll see it at the bottom and About page on the SS website.

    • My order from Zapals is still processing when I paid on the 20th, so be careful OzBargainers. I've created a ticket, but it's the the weekend atm.

      • +2

Zapals is terrible. I ordered something from them back in December, & I never received it. Got 'lost' in the mail.

Some believe the chinese government is our friend and we should open our homes to them

        • +1

Uhhhh… why Chinese government wanna spend resources to 'see' your home? I mean if you have some worthful secrets, AU gov confidentiality agreement would not let you use this for sure. Otherwise, no one wants to spend a time to see your home.

        • @richiebnc:

Idividually, yes its ridiculous to spy on Joe average. But imagine you had millions..
And its not only for A/V, hackers can use these in zombie networks. If you think the Chinese government has no use for that, I worry

        • @outlander:
Hacker is a good point. But I don't think million person will buy $30 camera for security use…

Can you get a video feed from the camera while you are outside of your home?

Cheers i'm getting it to monitor the front door to outside, the hack firmware seems to work on wifi while i'm at home (useless to me) but how can i connect to it while i'm out on 4G?

May someone please ELI5 why I would want to download this (for us noobs)

      • +4

well funny you ask, most 5yo can probably tell you.

Cloud based cameras (like this) punch a hole through your firewall/network & connect to an external server (in China for these) which then allow you to connect you iToy it whether you're inside or outside your network. In theory other people could hack (or be allowed) to connect to your new camera without your knowledge. in theory they could also reprogram your camera to allow them to access your home network (e.g. spy on you via your TV…hello Samsung).

Anyway the firmware hack allows you to turn off these cloud services. If you know what you're doing, you'll be able to access your cam only if you're connected with in your network (but not with the official software). If you know what you're doing you could also connect remote via a VPN (if you have one setup at home). The downside is the hacked stream is unencrypted, so anyone in your network could connect & see it. So it's not safe either.

TLDR: If you're paranoid about (the chinese govt) hacking your camera, flash it with a new firmware. if you're paranoid about (other hackers) hacking your network, then don't flash it.

TLDRTTLDR: use your eyes, they can't be hacked

        • I think you need to check your facts. The Samsung tv listing in on you, well it can't view you as it doesn't have a camera, required PHYSICAL access to the tv. If they have access to your tv, then you have many more problems.

        • @not a bargain:I think you need to check your eyes/dictionary. I said spy not watch.

and the CIA spying hack (Weeping angel) was done via upgrading the firmware. You don't need physical access to the device to upgrade the firmware. This can be done over the internet. Once they're inside your network, it's not hard to change your DNS settings on your router/modem (or possibly the TV) when your TV checks for updates, it gets redirected to the phony update site & installs the hacked firmware.

    • i've done this and run the hack, but when I check the storage available it says 0.1gb
not sure - and when I click expand sd on the IP page of the hack it gets an error.

    • Do you need to keep the SD card in for the hack to work, or can you apply the hack then take the SD card out and the hack will hold (even on power cycle)?

  • does this come with strap to attach to top of shoe?

  • Will this work outdoors?

    • Was thinking to use this as outdoor camera too
But i will put it under the roof. So just at my front door so it wont get any rain etc
Wondering how this get its power? Luring cable?

      • Wondering how this get its power?

        Power Input DC 5V/1A

      • +1

A USB adapter is included. So just buy a USB extension cable like 5m length and combine with the 2m included cable.

        • I'm not sure, but over that kind of length, you could get a voltage drop depending on the quality of the cables. Only way to be sure would be to give it a go.

  • Such a shame that there's no email notifications for this cam with the default software.

    • I get notification on my iPhone via the Mijia app. I think that's sufficient.

    • I have motion detections set and get notifications on Android and IOS via the app.

  • Pretty good camera. Bought 2 before I went on holidays. Was able to connect and monitor my house without any issues. Tempted to buy more.

    • Good to know. How do you view both cameras in one app? Does it give you 2x2 cam view or something like that? Thanks

      • +2

I think you can add up to 5 cameras. The app will show all of your cameras.

        • Thanks.

    • +1

I managed to enable to the cloud storage however the big issue is if camera is stolen or disconnected from the network, you loose access to videos stored in the cloud. that is useless as you can't see latest recordings before camera got tampered.

  • +1

    Compatible with synology nas?

  • +3

    I'm sorry, Dave. I can't do that..

  • +5

The motion sensing on this is so sensitive. Alerts on specs of dust. Heaps of false positives

    • +1

You can set the sensitivity. On the highest setting, mine goes off for bugs and dust at night and sometimes a street light 80m away. Trying to convince my wife that we have a ghost.

      • +3

mine always alert in the middle of the night, and I hate pressing the replay button to see some weird thing going across it in night vision mode… cutting close to 'paranormal activity' there.

I knew I regret putting one up whenever I start staring at the live feed during night time (afraid to see something I shouldn't)

        • I have my notifications muted on my devices through the night.

        • The only way you can really stop this is by turning off the in built IR light and using an IR light spaced about 1m away. The bugs are attracted to the IR light at night.

      • +1

Mine is on the lowest setting

    • +1

Yeah same problem here set on lowest sensitivity. Especially bad in night mode because the IR leds make anything floating past (like a spec of dust) light up and trigger the motion detection.

I wish the night mode could be adjusted to come on only when it's very dark, because the low light performance is actually very good.

The software is the downfall of this camera. Hardware performance wise it's incredibly good for the price.

      • Yes, the picture is actually quite good. A lot better than the original Arlo

  • +3

Can anyone share how they use their setup.
Eg. Do you have a set day of week, start time/end time for motion detection?
Can you switch it on using a smart phone as you walk out the door?
What about the night vision mode on/off?
Can you save photos to the cloud?

Just trying to get a grip of the way people actually use them.

    • -2

      Youtube is your friend :)
      eg.
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rs1PlvLAeuI

      • +1

Thanks pork chop. That video didn't answer any of those questions, sadly. Eg. I can set a start/stop time, but, can I set day of the week and start/Stop time (eg. Weekday vs weekends)? Can I set night mode after 7pm and before 6am? Can I press 1 button on my phone to switch it on as I'm walking out the door?

If anyone can share how they use it, it would really help.

    • +3

I'm pretty sure you can switch it on with a smartphone. Mine are currently off, only plug them in when I go away for more than a few days.

Night vision mode can be switched off

Don't know about saving to cloud as mine writes to an SD.

These can also alert via sound (smoke detector, Co2)

      Overall, not really a fan.

They have served me well (used it as a baby monitor when at a wedding and it did what I wanted despire many false positives), but the app is annoying and the motion sensitivity is ridiculously annoying.

      • +1

        Great feedback, thanks!

    • +1

I couldn't really figure out setting a recording window - language issues (could probs work it out on Youtube). I open the app and turn on the cam before bed which is easy. NV on/off is by a button in settings. NV is not that great unless there is another light source. Videos are saved in the app or SD card. I don't think you can save the recordings to the cloud yet.

    • Mine arrived from Zapals a couple of days ago I and I have been experimenting over the weekend, so my experience is limited.
Yes, in the "Automation" menu, you can set times to switch the camera on or off, and on specific times on days of the week. So at minimum you would need 2 recurring actions eg 'Every Day at 9am switch on" and "Every Day at 6pm switch off". You could then combine this with "Record all the time" or "Motion Activated" mode. Good luck in translating the partial Chinese menu items though. :(

You can use your smartphone to switch it on/off using the Mi Home app. If you do multiple cameras, then you could set up a "scene" (eg "Leave Home") where it then switches every camera on. You could also have another scene "Arrived Home" where it switches them all off. You could combine this with a Xiaomi Home Gateway and a switch of some type (eg the "Magic Cube") so that you press a button on the way out, or perhaps shake the magic cube to then activate a scene.

Night vision can be auto, on, or off. You don't seem to be able to script a changing of the mode, so I would just leave it on "auto".

I am not sure if it saves the videos to the cloud or locally to the device, as it certainly stores "somewhere" even when there is no SD card plugged in, and it is possible to retrieve it to the local device for viewing (but I have not yet tried disconnecting the device to see if I can retrieve the recording).

Does anybody know how to set the duration of the motion activated recording? It defaults to 15 seconds which I find is not enough.
Also does anybody know how to reduce the timeout between motion activated recordings? The timespan is too long for my situation at the moment.

I have a couple PoE cameras with a pvr at home. Can I add this into my system?

I use hikvision cameras and a foscam pvr.

    • +1

RTSP can be activated using the hack. If your pvr supports rtsp then I assume you can connect it. No app support will work when you have rtsp enabled.

  • +7

Looks like the 2017 stock as it includes a power adapter.
I set it up outside under the patio to monitor the main door. I also covered it with black tape (hardly recognisable now) and used a 5m USB cable for power extension.

I have a 64gb card installed which gives at least 2 weeks of continuous recording. The motion sensor also records a 15sec video which uploads to the cloud and provides app notification.

You can access the camera using the app from anywhere as long as it is connected to the internet and can also be shared with other accounts.

You can also have two way communications using the app as it has a mic and speaker. Night vision is also a nice feature.

  • It's not clear to me, is there a dvr solution with this? A central repository of recordings with ability to review all the cameras, fast forward, rewind via a timeline. Essentially like a bona fide security system.

    • This is through the app. When you install a memory card, you can enable continuous recording and play back anytime. Otherwise if you have an external pvr system, then you will need to install the hack and enable rtsp.

  • Ordered 2.
Will have a play and see how they go
Have setup many dvr systems for clients and local electrical company subcontract me to do their Tech side of their dvr setups for clients.
    Another toy

    • You sound like the right person to demystify my query. What is the dvr solution for this?

  • What brand/model is the SD card?

  • +2

    Hi rep/OP,

Can you do a deal for xiaomi yi (action camera)?

    Thanks.

  • Has anyone had a problem of them going offline? Mine does it intermittently and I can't seem to fix it.tried different chargers etc

    • +1

Check the last posting from Dec 2016. I saw a similar comment. No suggestion though. Contact supplier?

      • That was probably me asking the same question haha ;)

  • Is there an English android app for this?

    • The videos above show a software that is mostly English. See Pork Chop's video.

      • Thanks but I have the mihome app and the settings are 90% chinese

    • Set it up using Chinese then switch to English. Mine wouldn't work with it setting up in English on the Android App. Fang Hacked now so I deleted the app.

  • Is there 2 way sound. Like I can hear what sound the camera picks up and I can talk in my iPhone and the person on the other side of camera can hear me

Can I do this remotely over 4G

    • +1

      yes you can

  • +1

Anyone know of a way to power this with poe? I've read micro USB can power it, surely poe to USB is an option?

  • I bought one from the last OZ deal and found it's not usable.
When I was trying to connect the camera, it's always time-out.

Checked some posts saying they are not suitable for the Australian network something (can't really remember what the reason is).

    Just for your reference.

    • +1

Set as chinese region during setup. Won't work otherwise.

      • thanks~! I'll give it a try. Finger cross~! Will update you once I tried :)

  • +1

Anyone know if this is ONVIF complaint?
I use Blue Iris for my IP cameras and wondering if this would hook up to it?

    • Don't think so, I grabbed one to test, I plan on running the hack mentioned above and just using the RTSP stream to get it into BI.

  • I think, Camera will be useless if it can't send us sensible alert when someone break-in to house.

    1. Do you guys know if this camera can capture the motion detection and send images (JPG) to email ?
    2. if email support not available, i understand the app will use Phone Notification when motion detected but no images will be recorded?. can anyone confirm ?

    Thanks :)

  • Does anyone know if the stream on these will be accessible via browser. Would like to use it with zoneminder. Thanks

EDIT: Looks like there is a user in this thread doing it https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/291829#comment-4442683

  • camera only out of stock
