Is there any point getting extra warranty?

    • +12

Of all the hundreds of cases I've seen, I've never yet come across a situation where extended warranty was worth getting.

Not even close. Instead, you see a lot of complaints from people who got the extended warranty, then got the run-around when they tried to make a claim and it ended up being a waste anyway.

      • Okay, thank you for that!

      • +2

If it's an extended manufactures warranty from Dell (opposed to a third party) is almost certainly worth getting if you want to get service beyond the standard warranty period. Dell don't give you the run around in general.

        • +2

That's a good point - it's not like Harvey Norman where the extended warranty is basically a scam, like the $50 HDMI cables.

Still, for $40 - $130 extra on a $300 laptop, you're probably better off saving that money for your next laptop. Dell's reliability is pretty good, in my experience, compared to other similarly-priced laptops.

  • Edit: It has started now.

  • 11.6-inch HD (1366 x 768) Anti-Glare LED-Backlit Display

    = dull and lifeless.

Still, for the money it's a great little computer.

    • +3

It still can be hooked up to a monitor via HDMI?

  • +3

Decent laptop for the price. I've owned mine for 1 month now. Sadly, mine had a uneven base and then a speaker static/hiss issue. A tech is coming over this Fri to try and repair it.

I initially loaded a linux distro (Antergos MATE) and was able to get 6~ hours of battery life with tlp+thermald. However, I went back to Windows 10 for about ~7 hours (LTSB). Will be dual booting in the future once this mess with the speakers gets sorted out.

If I could do it again though, I'd much rather save up a bit more and go for a Toshiba Chromebook 2. 13" + FHD is a much better form factor and you can put linux (GalliumOS for example) on the devices for maximum versatility. Either that or get a cheap used Lenovo X230 or Dell Latitude 7240.

  • Isn't this the usual price?

    • +2

After discount $319.20 is the usual price.
But eBay discounts does have an expiry

      • +2

Yep, normally $399 delivered via Dell ebay store. Great little lounge room coffee table dweller or convenient light mobile travelling laptop.

      • Yes until the next sale, which is pretty much all the time.

  • Thanks! I just bought one for my mum (:

  • +3

Buy a wireless keyboard and plug this little laptop into a dumb TV via HDMI and you've got yourself a decent media server.

For a HTPC I'd probably pony up the extra for one of those touchpad keyboards e.g. the Logitech K400. Using a mouse on the couch is a bit annoying personally.

        • +1

K400 are great had two for over 2 years for my home theatre setups

          @Javelin:

Plex and use the phone app as a remote. Or intels remote app for mobile devices.

          Yatse remote for android.

    • What's the best way to connect this to 1080p TV? This is only 768p so we can't clone this to TV unless downgrade TV resolution. The only option is using TV as a 2nd monitor(expanding) without reduced resolution? Any other option?

      • +1

You either extend the displays (use as a 2nd monitor) or you use the TV as the monitor (leaving the laptop screen black). You can even change the power settings in Windows so closing the laptop lid doesn't switch the computer off.

        • 2nd option is better for me. Thank you for sharing this.

  • +2

When will this think finally crack below $319?. It's like dell groundhog day.

    • Mate if you to through cashrewards it'll work out to be under $319 =p

  • Great laptop but the display is terrible.

    • +1

NUC but with screen and keyboard :)

But seriously much better value than say this thing.

  • I can only buy for $399 from ebay. How can i apply further 20% off? (To make it $319?) please help. Sorry first time buying:)

    • when paying there's a space to put in a code, put CMUM20 there.

      • Ok thanks, i will try now

    • Apply this code: CMUM20 as a voucher code at the checkout

      • Ok thanks, i will try now

  • +1

Been waiting to get one, finally Hopefully it doesn't go under $320 soon…

I also noticed you can get the 2-1 Touchscreen version for $420, not sure if there are any other internal hardware changes for this version.

Ive used the Touchscreen while setting up for a client great for surfing ozbargain in bed :p

    • +1

Same, I was looking at the http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Dell-Inspiron-11-3000-Series-….

      $100 more is tempting.

      • Can you see any other differences? Wonder if you can still swap ram and harddrive.. Should have opened it while I had it.

Is touchscreen windows worth the extra 100…

I can't see anything else in same form factor 11.6 and price $420

        • +1

Ill looks identical from the specs. I assume its the same in that 4gb ram can be added if required.

        • +1

          @elzilcho:

Also a little heavier and thicker than non touch version.

          Height: 18.45mm (0.73") | Width: 292mm (11.5") | Depth: 196mm (7.72") | Starting at weight: 1.18 Kg (2.6 Lbs)

          Dimensions and weight Height: 20.9mm (0.82") | Width: 291.6mm (11.48") | Depth: 201.9mm (7.95") | Starting at Weight: 1.31 kg (2.89lb)

        • +1

You can, in fact, put 8Gb in, despite what the Dell documentation says.

  • I'm looking for a small portable lappy for web surfing, downloading games/anime, playing basic games and file transfers.

This seems to fit the bill but is there anything I should know before dropping the cash? What's the thing that lets this device down the most?

    • Gets a little warm in lap but a laptop tray fixes that. The click button felt bit cheap but I didn't have time to use it long. Could be fixed with mouse.

      • +1

My very own lap-warmer, just in time for winter, bargain!

  • This or a used i5 laptop?

    • +5

One of the issues with second hand laptops is battery run time.

  • +3

Had mine 6 months now, very happy with it. Ive upgraded the SSD & Ram, here is an imgur album:

    https://m.imgur.com/gallery/NsBbC

Plenty of discussion in past threads on this deal regarding the upgrades being worth it or not for the time/$ spent.

    • Thanks for sharing that. Quite a little machine you've got there now with the upgrades. Have you noticed any battery degradation after 6 months?

I so wish there was a way to buy a IPS panel and fit it into the frame. That would make this laptop pretty much perfect.

      • +1

It's hard to say if the battery has gotten weaker since I almost always use it at home with a charger on hand. I have to imagine the battery has dulled somewhat through the time Ive had it though, cant say I noticed too much. You are right about the screen - when compared side-by-side with an iphone 6 its clear the iphone's screen is more vibrant.

    • Thanks mate, that is some fantastic info :)

    • Did you have to buy specific ram or will any Laptop DDR3 1600Mhz work ?
      ie http://www.msy.com.au/pc-components/17205--crucial-so-dimm-c…

      • Any laptop DDR3 or DDR3L will work.
Note that the laptop comes with DDR3L.

  • Pretty good deal, just bought a synology nas with that cpu and it was over $700.

  • Would this be able to run Overwatch well enough?

    • Not a chance.

  • Is it out of stok now? For the $439 base price. As it requires to select extended warranty now

    • +1

      They just updated the stock.

    • Now only the standard warranty is available.
That's odd - why wouldn't they want to print money?

  • +2

    Just for everyone's information:
This laptop used to come with mail-in service after remote diagnosis.
It now comes with In-Home service after remote diagnosis.

  • +1

I just ordered one for my mother using the mothers day code only to realise the expected delivery date is way after mothers day. Typical.

  • Any 13 inch worthwhile?

  • Has the price gone up to $499 less 20% = $399 ?

Therefore the 2 in 1 at $420 is better bargain at $30 more?

    • Bugger. Well, that's me out!

    • +1

      Says $399 here.

      • Its back to $399

        • it was always $399.
you need to put in the code for discounted price.

        • +2

          @spk:

Nope for a little while the price went up to $499 but back to $399 now

  • Can anyone comment on whether it has a backlit keyboard? I'd like to use it for work in bed, and little things like a backlit keyboard make a huge difference.

  • Would this run Team Fortress 2 on the worst settings? I would like to take my virtual hats with me wherever I go.

  • Bought the 2 in 1 version last night.

Anyone know how long delivery actually takes?

Mine says between 24 May and 30 May, but I need it before 26 May as I am traveling overseas.

I would have thought Dell wouldn't need 20 days for delivery?

In fact anyone got a despatch notice yet?

    • I would say, you might receive it before the 24th, but no guarantees.
The timeline goes something like this:
      1) Order
      2) Order processed (approx 2 to 5 days from order)
      3) Assembled in Indonesia (Approx 2 to 3 days from "order processed")
      4) Shipped from Indonesia to Australia (time varies)
      5) Local delivery via courier.

      • I just got an email from dell saying they putting order together and it should arrive by 23 May.

All my past dell stuff arive on time so lets hope so.

        • just a heads up my dell lappy is on its way as its in transit and now expected here on the 18th of May. :)

        • @bargrin: Just a heads up, mine has said "In transit" for about 10 days, with expected delivery tomorrow (15/5). Will let you know if I actually receive it tomorrow.

        • @bsmksg: Received mine today.

        • @bsmksg:

Cool, even though mine supposed to arrive tomorrow its currently showing as on board with driver for delivery today :)

  • Got my laptop yesterday and very happy with it.

Overall for the price its a good deal (touch sreen version comes to $370 for me with GST off).

There are little things that aren't great but that is due to price point, so the screen not incredible high def and touch pad a liitle weak but cant expect those to be super at this price

Overall good vale low end laptop which is better value after all discounts.
