        Bauhn Supremacy?

  • I bought a bauhn tv a little while ago, and took it back after an hour. They are REALLY bad tvs. If you have any kind of eye for detail you will feel the same

    • +32

Fair enough but it's all subjective. I'm still really enjoying my 65" 4K BAUHN I bought 18 months ago. Yes it has it's issues with the built-in Tuner (slight audio sync delay & motion blur) but it looks friggin' fantastic when streaming via Chromecast. The newer model is better and was even cheaper so I don't think you can paint all their products with the same brush for everyone. To be honest I wasn't holding much hope for the TV but it has exceeded all expectations and hey with Aldis 60 day return policy it's absolutely worth checking out IMO but if you genuinely do have an eye for detail then you probably shouldn't be looking at TVs of this calibre anyway :)

      • +5

I am with you, got mine in November I think. It did have a bad flickering happening occasionally, fixed under warranty within a 10min on site visit and the last couple of months has been issue free. Apparently there was batch that had bad piece of wiring or something. Repair guy knew what it was as soon as I described the issue to him when he got the warranty repair job.

Been using it along with the Xiaomi 4K TV box and it has been great.
Issue now and then where Netflix can not play the show. Reboot the TV and then it is fine. I am not 100% sure if this is a fault with the TV or the Android TV box. As from what I have found the issue has something to do with Netflix software checks that the connection is a particular standard to allow it to output 4k. Something like that. Could be just a matter of what order the devices start up too. Very minor issue so at this stage not too worried about it.

But yes the 4K, non smart, TV Bauhn has been perfect for me so far.

    • Lots of reports that adjusting screen settings improves viewing experience.

All Bauhn models are different, usually sourced from different factories. Quality varies between models & sometimes within a model. Quality control is not great with Bauhn trademarked Aldi products.

I returned a Bauhn TV long ago that developed white lines on the screen after 1 week. As I know quality control within a batch is poor, I had bought 2 TV at same time. Second worked great, but returned both to avoid risk of it also failing.

    • What source were you using?
      What "detail" were you expecting?

    • They are best of the cheap range

  • Is this this first TV that has a Chromecast 'included'? Or do you just get one in the box?

      • +16

        that would be stealing.

      • +1

I don't think you are the only one to think like that - I did. So did the supplier!

Staff usually do not know what is included, rarely open the box to check contents, and many could not be bothered. They ask you to provide phone number as main way of controlling issues, but problem is just passed onto supplier. (The main supplier Tempo requested my advice on quality control issues.)
On larger value items the Manger is usually called & may check the item.

This item may be flagged for Manager inspection or no credit will be available from supplier, given the supplier's note about return of Chromecast in the manual.

I've accidentally failed to return an included accessory, was not contacted & staff told me not to worry. I was trying to do the right thing, but staff failed to assist. But if people abuse the system, it may result in tighter controls or loss of no questions return within 60 days.

        • +2

Also seems like a lot of effort to get a free chromecast lol.

        • +1

          @Click_It:
Yes. Lugging a big TV from & to Aldi is not my idea of fun, & certainly not to fraudulently get a free Ultra Chromecast.

        Check out page 37: http://www.bauhn.com.au/literature_158571/ATV58UHDC-0517-_Instruction_Manual

"Returns that do not include the Google Chromecast Ultra will not be accepted, and will be considered incomplete with parts missing.

If you are returning your Bauhn 58” 4K Ultra HD LED LCD TV for repair, not refund (see previous page for details about product repair), then it is not necessary to return the Google Chromecast Ultra."

Yay dimmable light bulbs. Perfect timing as I was just about to buy them from Bunnings (dimmable so expensive $.$ )

    Thanks OP - set a reminder :)

    • On special @ Coles ATM…

      • for Dimmables? I had a look and saw the normal Philips ones, they werent on half price anymore so I sort of glazed over. I tried typing in the Coles website and had no results, any chance you know the brand?

        • Mirabella i think, but this is Victoria, they run different specials in different states

        • @8200: oh yeah, we bought about 30 of the LED globes and some downlights :), got to change out the whole house. Couldnt see any dimmable ones though.

      • Coles doesn't carry dimmable LEDs, at least from what I've seen.

  • +3

They should include a bonus soundbar instead with how crap the sound is from the tv

    • +5

Don't most TVs have crap sound these days?
Just get a 2.1 mains-powered PC speaker set if you don't want a proper surround system.

      • Just get a 2.1 mains-powered PC speaker set

That's what I use, cheap and sounds great.

  • +1

Curious how you get the details of the specials so early? - when I go to the website I only see "Special Buys" for May 3 and May 6.

      • +4

Do you deliver them to people's front-yards/letterboxes, or just chuck them in the gutter whilst driving past? - this is the standard way catalogues are delivered in my area.

        • +8

Must be Placed in the letterbox, tried throwing from the car and got in trouble so its back to walking.

        • @nocure:

          lol

        • @nocure:

Does it pay off doing that? Is the income any good and is this your main job or a sidedish

        • @dosada:
          Most weeks its about $40-$50

      • You got a problem with dogs?

        • Oh don't be so cattish🐱🐱🐱

  • Any idea what Aldi in Brissie stocks these products?

    • All stores should stock catalogue specials

      • That's not true. Stones Corner never stocks anything. Chermside does, but level of stock is fluctuating.

        • Complain to head office

        • +1

That hasn't been my experience generally. At times when I've tried to find items at other Aldi's they've directed me to Stones Corner as being the best chance. Could it be that the items you're trying to get are sold out?

        • @ndenham: Possibly, if they're redirecting people there!

        • @mazorn:

In my case it's my local anyway. For reference though I've generally always seen the more popular items stocked at Stones Corner, however it's also a popular Aldi so if you want an item like TV or snow gear you'd better believe you should show up on the morning they're released.

    • Found the one near Kelvin Grove on Kelvin Grove Rd usually has a lot of the special stuff, fairly big store.
Think the same for the Alex Hills one as well.

    Bauhn TV review

i own the 55 inch Bauhn Tv i purchased 2 of them 6 months ago, i at first had a dead pixel on 1 tv i took it back and they replaced it straight away no questions asked. they are pretty good with their customer service. second one i got works flawlessly and is very elegant. for the price you pay it is an awesome tv. it does require some color calibration but its simple to do. just use your laptop or computer calibration and you can get a even more pleasing image. also if you plug a computer on it make sure you change it to 60Hz. it is by default a 30hz setting but it just needs to be changed to 60 in the settings. also make sure you have the correct HDMI cable v2.0 or higher and it is less than 8m long. overall very pleased with the tv and would recommend . has a good video codec on them from USB and the speakers are solid in performance. the only gripe i have is the remote isnt the best as i have to aim directly at the IR sensor so that is the only thing i can complain of in this TV. and with that chromecast ultra alone costing 100 on average this tv combo is a bargain.

no i am not paid by aldi or any one to write this review.

    • +1

      I agree with this.

Nothing wrong with them for the price, you may have a faulty one, but they return it no problem.

    • There's no such thing as a HDMI 2.0 cable
      https://www.cnet.com/au/news/do-you-need-new-hdmi-cables-for…

      • +3

CNET are misguiding people there, based.

True, a 'HDMI 2.0 Cable' doesn't exist in name - but 18Gbps High Speed HDMI cables certainly do, and they're required for stable, sustained 4K 60Hz, especially in 10 bit colour.

A standard HDMI cable will only pump out a stable 30Hz , and may not work correctly with 60Hz and HDR signals due to the extra bandwidth deeper colour encoding requires.

None of my normal HDMI cables run my HTPC at 2160p 10 bit colour at 60Hz without artifacts, nor will my standard cables let me play 4K HDR games on my PS4 Pro. Only the 18Gbps cable that I purchased, and the 18Gbps cable that came in my PS4 Pro box do.z

So yeah, HDMI 2.0 cables, no - 18Gbps cables, absolutely.

        • I don't have any first hand experience with HDR, how old and how long are those cables that were artifiacting?

          from the spec itself:
          http://www.hdmi.org/manufacturer/hdmi_2_0/hdmi_2_0_faq.aspx#…

        • The standard PS4 cable that came with my 2013 PS4 (original) doesn't work for 4K on my PS4 Pro, nor my HTPC (properly).

Nor does my standard Xbox One cable (also from 2013).

Nor do any of my cheap eBay cables.

They all run the HTPC fine at 30Hz, but not 60.

All cables are 1.5m or 2m, none longer.

I'm just going by practice/experience. It's weird the HDMI spec saying it should all be gravy, when in my case, with various combinations (I've had 3 4K TVs of various cost and brand, currently on a Sony 65X9300 that cost $4000) - it isn't so.

I know I've seen threads commenting on the PS4 Pro not working with other people's original PS4 lead, so that's definitely not just me.

        • its called high speed HDMI

its not officially called hdmi 2.0 cable. Thats just BS marketing from ppl selling cables

      • if you want 4k at 60hz then yes you do need v2.0 or higher. normal hdmi v1.4 can only go 4k at 30hz. or as brad puts it yes 18gbps cable.

        • Nope, I just dug out our first HDMI cable from 10-15 years ago, long before 2.0 was a thing and it runs my monitor at 4K60Hz

  • wasnt the 50/55" hisense 700 this price not long ago? cant see why anyone would get this really….

    • My sister got the 58in 4k Hisense from Harvey Norman 3 months ago for 798 with 3 year warranty. She loves it after living with a 40 inch.

  • My 50" LG plasma recently died so I'm in the market for a cheap replacement as a sort of stop-gap TV to last a year before upgrading to a mid-high end TV.

Anyway am tossing up between the Target Platinum brand 55" 4k for $599 or this Bauhn. Don't need a smart TV as have Chromecast and not concerned with sound as have a soundbar so just want a screen. Would the quality be much different or would they be on par? Would the Bauhn smart features be sluggish, forcing me to use the Chromecast anyway? Size difference isn't huge between the two but the price difference is $200.

    • -1

The Target TV has 3yr warranty, Bauhn is usually 1. Unsure if ACL extends this though. Is it reasonable to expect a TV to last more then one year this price point?

    • The sluggishness of Smart interface won't be known until this model is released in this sale. Previous models are no indication.

But, comments on previous Bauhn Smart TV have suggested using Chromecast on non-smart TV was better.

So inclusion of an outside product at extra cost to the supplier may be conceding this Smart interface is not that great. I am knowledgeable of Tempo's supply & testing processes - so suspect that may be the case for inclusion of Chromecast.

Also have dead 50" LG plasma.

    • +1

I have a Target Platinum 55" 4K and it has a Samsung panel in it, so far so good. Backlighting is not the most even out there, but that's kind of expected for edge LED lighting. The menu is definitely more responsive than some of the low cost "smart" TVs (I have an older Bauhn smart TV), but not by munch. I think the non smart TVs from Bauhn and Platinum use the same SOC (MStar?) and the menus (down to code to access engineering mode) are identical.

      • Do you know what Refresh rate the Platinum is and does it do 4k @ 60hz? Do FTA TV channels look ok?

        • It does 4k@60Hz with my Roku4 and also my HTPC (via an RX480 graphics card). It can display 4:4:4 chroma test patterns correctly when connected to my HTPC. Upscaling of FTA channels is not great for SD and 720p signals but it is quite good for 1080p signals.

        • @systema: Awesome, thanks. Also have a RX480 so sounds good.

  • I'll buy the tv just for the Chromecast

  • If you watch free-to-air TV then definitely avoid these 4K Aldi TVs like the plague. Their aggressive upscaling renders free-to-air into unwatchable smudge.

    • I have a stb that upscales it

      • Sounds like a viable workaround. I bought the 55" black series last year and free-to-air was unwatchable. The Freeview was dodgy, too. It also the lip-sync issue but a firmware upgrade fixed that. Took it back without issue.

    • Poor to average viewing of SD & HD after upscaling has been commented on in Bauhn 4K deals.

  • How is the picture quality of this TV compared to the recent Hisense Series 7 on sale at JB ?

    • +3

How is anyone meant to know that?

  • +1

I got the Bauhn 65" 4k TV the last time around a month and a half ago ($899), and have to say im very impressed with it. Im using it with a Xiaomi mi box for 4k content and kodi, with Bose v35 5.1 home theatre for sound and cant fault it for the price.

I would say this TV is probably good too, but like others have said they source things from different manufacturers and panels, so each model would be different to the next with QA. Worth a punt at this price

  • Do many manufacturers do 58"? I bought the Hisense 58" which was a good buy but didn't see too many others in this size. I wonder if this one could also be a Hisense.

  • How much are Philips Dimmible LEDs these days?

    • Full price is $12 without discount at WW, accidentally bought one and returned it.

      • Philips are better correct?

  • +3

Just as a note - I was in Seaford, SA store just before, and they still had 6 of the last catalogue's model (48 inch) clearing for $348, down from $499. Might wanna check your local store, at least in SA.

  • +3

    .
This is NOT a 'Smart TV' nocure needs to correct his title (neither Aldi or Bauhn claim it is)
it's a normal TV it doesn't have any internet access or apps built in (which is what Smart TV's have), instead it comes with the bonus Google Chromecast ultra

  • I just moved from the 40" Black UHD TV on sale last year to the 48" on sale recently as the 40" started flaking out two days out of warranty. Luckily, store manager was very accommodating in allowing me a return. I thought I'd mention, only real differences I could tell between the Black and regular TV is the bezel/stand design, and more importantly the remote control (black has a much better remote). UI appears to be identical, and all the ports are the same, so I assume the logic board is the same too, just different panel.

  • Hopefully Aldi got enough stock.

  • Any reviews on the TV for those that bought it over the weekend?

    • +1

      Offer starts tomorrow.
