Hainan Airlines, a 5 star airline is offering return flights to Hangzhou (HGH) from Sydney for $292 and Melbourne for $319 (or $336 with 1 night hotel stay in Xi'an). Also on sale is Melbourne to Shenzhen for $297 including a 1 night hotel stay in Xi'an. Flights connect through either Changsha or Xi'an (free stopover city). Two checked bags and meals are included. Similar to last month's Hainan deal to Shanghai/Beijing with a hotel stay. A hotel is provided when stopovers are greater than 6 hours.

I don't know too much about Hangzhou other than it's a popular tourist destination near lakes and is about an hour away by train from Shanghai. Guide. There may be some dates that align to get you 2 nights hotel but I haven't found them. You'll have to keep manually plugging in dates as all of the sites don't seem to be properly pulling up the right prices.

Shenzhen has some awesome tech markets. Check out this guy creating an iPhone from scratch by buying parts from the markets.

Great find. Also as always, don't forget to add visa costs.

    • Yeah its around $100 to $130 depending if you need to mail in the visa or go to the office directly

Hangzhou is only an hour from Shanghai on HSR and is popular with the West lake.

    • Hangzhou, along with Suzhou, are said by Chinese to have the most beautiful
      Girls in China.

      • I must correct you. Suzhou and Hangzhou are called by Chinese "Paradise on Earth" while Sichuan province, especially Chengdu and Chongqing are where you can see most beautiful girls.

Just got back from my Hainan flight from the last deal. They're a full service airline probably of a similar quality to Vienam airlines or Garuda, not at the same level as Singapore/Cathay/Qantas. The leg room and seats were quite spacious, far better than any budget airline. The food is ok but a little bland think 90s style and they only serve alcohol on the first meal service. They seem to arrive at the cheaper/older terminals though and we had to deplane then take a bus which was frustrating.

Being a Chinese airline the government forbids the use of any device with 3G/4G capability even if it's in flight mode so bring a laptop/wifi tablet if you want to have your own entertainment. Their entertainment is a bit touch and go. On the way over we had an old school analogue TV in the seat back that was faulty so no one could watch anything. On a 787 domestic flight they had a modern touch screen system full of the latest western movies and shows. On the flight back we had an A330 which had an android tablet based entertainment system. The tablet had English language but unfortunately no content from any western country just Chinese movies and music.

Does Hainan airlines offer Hainan chicken rice on its flights?

    • I don't know which airport you landed. As far as I know, there's no budget terminal in any Chinese city. Beijing has a budget airport for China United Airline only. Shanghai is the only the other city that has two airports. In Beijing, Hainan and its subsidiary airlines use terminal one for domestic flights, which is 5 min's walk away from terminal 2, where you can take subway airport line to the city.

It's true and very annoying that 3G/4G devices are still not allowed to used on Chinese flights. On my flight to Changsha with Hainan last year, they also provided a android tablet for entertainment. It did have western movies and TV shows on it. So I don't know.

      • I didn't mention budget terminals just said cheaper/older. Terminal 1 at Beijing is definitely the worst terminal with limited food and shopping options (maybe 4 different food outlets airside) and combined with the fact that we had to take a bus both times made it an unpleasant experience. In Changsha for a stopover they also used a bus to take us to a plane on the other side of the airport to board. These aren't deal breakers but if you were flying with Qantas/Cathay/Singapore you'd probably use the brand new Terminal 3.

Terminal 3 is for Star Alliance members only. It's the best-looking for sure. But it's too huge for me, you need to take internal trains to get to the gates. I agree Terminal 1 is not good, but actually it's newer than terminal 2. As for the shuttle bus to and from plane thing, it's quite common in China. Not necessarily a feature for Terminal 1 or Hainan. I don't know if it's because they don't have enough gates or just some kind of disorganization. I personally don't appreciate QANTAS's service. But I have to say Sydney airport is the most efficient airport on earth. Smart gate reduced the through time big time and is available to travelers of all nations instead of Australasian citizens. And the best thing is you never need to wait too long to get first luggage coming.

Never tried Hainan airlines before but if it is similar quality as Garuda as you said, it should be very good (both are 5 star airlines according to skytrax).

I found Garuda flights are much better than Singapore and Qantas these days - better food, friendlier staff and onboard wifi that actually works. The only downside is probably the stopover in Jakarta/Bali, not much to do in those airports.

    • Having just arrived back at Melbourne airport on a MAS flight, where we had to use the steps and take a bus back to the terminal (the wheelchair users had to hop onto the bus…) then I guess it is no worse than Melbourne airport!

  • All these recent deals make me so wanna fly!

I just got back from my Hainan flight to Nanjing, stopping over at Xi-an.
Our stopover was around 23 hours and we got a hotel stay provided by Hainan airline for free - which was pretty cool. I thought their food and on board service was pretty good. The flight has huge leg space and snacks/refreshments for free throughout the whole journey. Entertainment provided has the latest movies and shows as well. Pretty awesome value for the price i paid.
If you are stopping over for more than 6 hours, go to the Hainan Airline staff and ask for free accommodation, they will prepare it for you.

    • Do you recall what the hotel was? Did you have a choice on accommodation?

      • +2

Sorry, i don't recall the name of the hotel. But the Xian stopover hotel was pretty bad, just basic accommodation. No choice provided by the airline. It's kinda take it or leave it arrangement. I arranged for a cab to go to the city with some guys who was on the same flight as well. Worked out quite well for me as i could have free accommodation while visiting the Terracotta Warriors.

On the way back, Hainan Airlines stopped over at Changsha and got another free hotel stay. The Changsha hotel was really good, nice and big comfy rooms - and again, i called a cab and went and visit the town and monuments which was pretty awesome.

  • If you go to Xian make sure you check out the Muslim quarter, it's good fun.

    • What kind of fun if I may ask?

      • +1

There are lots of open street stalls with meat on skewers and very cold beer. Also all of the Middle eastern food that is quite different to the standard chinese food is pretty good. Xian is worth a look for a few days, if you are brave enough, you can get the train East and head to ZhengZhou where the Shaolin Temple is. You can drive down the road and see all the students practising their kung fu. Very cool.

  • Hangzhou is fine for two days but it doesn't offer much. Stay there the night and take a fast train to Shanghai.

  • Went to Hangzhou a few years back. The West lake is very pretty and peaceful and the night show on the river (can’t remember what it was called) was excellent. You don’t need more than 2 nights there though. Don’t expect anyone to speak English, even in hotels. Its much, much more Chinese than shanghai.

Shanghai is an easy train ride away.

  • same here just got back from the previous deal mel to shenzhen via xian for a day stop over which i personally chose when there was connecting flights straight away from xian. I cant stop praising Hainan airlines for their services provided. Firstly, 23kgs*2=46kgs checked in luggage plus 10 kgs hand luggage on all flights. Free premium drinks on the flight with 2 meals on each flight. Free decent hotel in xian, free transfers to and from the hotel to the airport. I disagree with people comparing it to other airlines, for the price I paid and services received I am totally happy with everything and would recommend it to everyone.

  • Last time I stayed in the free xi'an hotel, it was not even in xi'an, it was the next city, the hotel was about 2 star and nobody speaks English, the bed was uncomfortable…
