C5OZ

Mobileciti has reduced their Samsung S8 Midnight Black price from $1199 to $1145.80.

Use the code C5OZ for 5% off to bring it down to $1088.51. If you are travelling overseas, a TRS claim would get you back $973.93 which is now under $1k for a local AU stock.

I recently purchased one @$1199 then used a 10% birthday voucher from Ebay, picked up the same day and then claimed TRS the next day. Well under $1k..

Does it work with coles price protection buying it from ebay? Full invoice from mobiciti

    • +1

      According to other posts yes

    • +1

      Yes it does

    • +1

Wouldn't your Coles card be charged the reduced amount though?

  • +4

C5AUS code doesn't seem to be applying - any suggestions?

Edit: Code is C5OZ (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/305485), works now!

Thanks tried like three times wondering what the hell was wrong.

    • +1

      Updated thank you!

      • Sorry can you explain to me how you can get $973.93 back from TRS? Don't you get back just the GST you've paid?

        • +1

i think he means you end up paying less than $1k after claiming from TRS

  • +1

    Mmm
Will wait till it's under 1k

    • +5

      I am over this s8 dilemma… waiting for one+5 or pixel 2…

      • +2

I might swap from iPhone to note

        • +1

Yeah note is a good opt.

        • I would not consider switching unless the new note has a 2Xlens like iphone 7 plus. 2X lens is very useful for me.

        • @maxdba: why?

        • @Braintrain1000: Because I love to take photos and find the 2Xlens in 7plus works great. However, I do want to use S-pen that apple does not offer at the moment.

      • just wait for the s9 then.

    • After buying my first 1k cellular device (iPhone 4s) and it's subsequent replacement with a superiori model, I am weary and have made a promise to myself to never buy such an expensive phone ever again. I'm going to stick to my sub $200 - $300 phones.

Also don't understand how people can always buy a new phone yearly. What's the point?

      • +2

Consumerism. People think having the latest and greatest product will give them fulfillment and happiness.

  • +3

Still waiting for the C20AUS/20% off coupon to get a better price.

    • +8

yeah so they can raise prices the night before.

    • Has there ever been one?

If so, can someone link to the original post?

  • +1

If you are travelling alone do you get caught if you claim TRS and come back with it?
Also can you claim TRS if your plant leaves late at night??

    • +1

Just don't bring back the invoice and ideally the phone's out of its package and in your bag.

      • Cool Thanks for the tip

        • Yes, you can claim TRS at any time. You can also DIY the claim by filling a form and stacking all invoices together into an envelope provided by the TRS office at the airport. They will send the invoice back to your post address once the claim has been done.

        • @maxdba:

Not sure if the DIY thing is still there. When i travlled 2 years ago I did DIY but the same stand wasn't there anymore when I travelled late last year.

        • +1

@tajid: download the TRS app and claim it.
Just show the barcode at the counter. It's quicker with no queue as the manual queue is quite long.

The TRS is just behind the Heismann shops after customs.

        • @tajid: It is there when I travelled early this year at Brisbane airport.

      • What do you mean by out of its package? So you should have it packaged when your leaving and unpackaged when your returning?

        • No the main point is you don't really want the phone to look new (sealed) if your bag is inspected upon arrival, may raise suspicion.

    • +1

Also, travelling with family members, you can pool this allowance (eg. 2 adults, you get $1800 allowance that can be brought back). Kids are $450.

Beware - my phone was pre-ordered with Mobileciti a few weeks ago and have a possible issue with the TRS. The name on the Mobileciti account does not match the passenger that would be claiming for the TRS. Obviously, the receipt came with the account-holders name on it. Contacted Mobileciti to see if they could amend this but they said legally they can not. Given that the account-holder is not the owner of the phone travelling and claiming, it seems that TRS would not be possible. Unfortunate!

      • +1

Its the same as if you bought off ebay and did a pick up from say Good Guys. You have to prove that you were the account holder of that Ebay account to have purchased the item. I've seen many got issues during collecting at GoodGuys with purchases bought from their ebay store but using a different account name like John X but his drivers license says X Y Z.

      • How to go about buying for someone who will be going overseas using my own eBay and PayPal account

        • I don't think that someone can claim the TRS…TRS requirement says that the person that purchase the item can claim the refund and that person has to show the name on the invoice to match the name on the passport and boarding pass.

If that someone has an ebay account, maybe use his/hers to purchase.

        • @revivor: You can invoice and ship to other person using your own paypal account.

      • Staple all your invoices together, the staff may not even bother to check the name on the invoice.

        • Staff member didn't even check my suitcase, line was too big. Just stamped and said next. ( pre check in)

Whats with the negative vote? Did I say something wrong?

      • It was a reasonable question

      • Yeah, two neg for no reason. +1 to balance it out.

    • No problem, you just need to bring it out of the country to be able to claim TRS. I've done it before with my wifes Pixel.

Don't worry about value inbound as it depreciates quickly.

  • Great phone. Picked 2 up from the Woolworths deal.

    • +2

If you've used a Nexus phone by chance, how does the bloatware compare? Not sure whether to buy an S7, S8 or Pixel and currently I'm preferring the Pixel due to lack of bloat and fast software updates. Just not sure when a "deal" is going to come around on the Pixel!

      • +9

My partner had a Nexus 4, I have a Nexus 10 (tablet) and have used friends Pixels. While the bloat-free software felt responsive, it lacks sensible features such as a file explorer that you have to supplement with downloaded apps that are often far more bloated. I'd definitely recommend the Pixel to anybody that's considering it. As for the Galaxy S8, I've had mine for a few weeks and I can say that I truly love it. I've had a Galaxy S3 and an S5 and though I never had an issue with the Touchwiz interface, it never impressed me.

The experience on the Galaxy S8 is a complete game changer. It's got the levels of sophistication rivalling apple products with beautiful and intuitive design. So many sensible features that should be on every phone. I'm talking built-in blue-light filter (think Twilight/Flux) for night-time eyestrain reduction, actually useful implementation of their Knox secure folder (I use for banking apps), handy shortcuts for camera, torch, compass. The only downside I've come across is the Bricksby integration - IMHO the phone would be nearing perfection for my needs if they hadn't tried to push Bixby. The fingerprint sensor placement made me cross to begin with but since I bought a case it's very easy to align my finger and I find I subconsciously have unlocked my phone before it's out of my pocket (Spigen Ultra Hybrid clear case, which showcases the nice Orchid Grey reverse on the phone).

One last thought - the battery is amazing. Before I installed battery-hogging apps like FB and Twitter I was going to bed at night with >80% charge. Now with it fully loaded I usually end up with >40%. I've also been using the Gear VR nearly every day though, which has been pretty neat. Longest session was 6 hours which used about 80% of the battery. The VR experience is amazing, I'm so glad I never gave in to temptation and bought a Vive or Oculus.

Lots to think about there but I wanted to give food for thought for anybody else considering the S8. It's more than twice what I've ever spent on a phone before but no regrets here!

        • +2

Just wondering, what do you use the Gear VR for? Like watching vids, playing games?

        • +2

^agree with the above. I used to hate touchwiz but in this case it's much more refined and less bloated - so much so I didn't even need to replace the launcher. I had stock android on my other phones previously.

        • a complete game changer

And yet all you described is a blue light filter which has been available in various Androids for a long time, secure storage ditto and er … shortcuts.

        • I turn off mobile data and wifi before I goto bed and seem to wake up with less than five percent gone. Use the toggle apps so you can just tap them off.

No airplane mode in case of emergency.

        • +1

Thanks mate that's very useful feedback! Food for thought indeed.

        • @Diji1:
Sorry, I was in a rush. The experience is so seamless and I haven't used many other recent phones that I'm not sure what is Samsung and what is Nougat, but I can mention a few other features. I like the edge interface, I find its the quickest way to get to shortcuts but also to my weather and calendar. Speaking of that, this is the first Samsung phone I've had where the default apps like calendar, notes, email etc look and work better than the Google equivalent. They've always just missed me off but this time they seem pretty good.

The multi window multitasking features are very useful, so easy to activate just holding the bottom left button I find myself using it all the time to copy between web pages or into apps, for whatsapp while on OzBargain or Reddit or YouTube. Screenshots have a scrolling feature that captures the rest of the page in one image. Can also take gif screenshots of videos which is pretty cool.

The battery saving features under phone optimisation are very intuitive and unobtrusive but I think it's why I'm getting such good battery. I also use the phone in 1080p mode unless in VR as I can't really tell the difference and I love having that control. All these settings and features I've mentioned are either in a side edge swipe or notification bar that feels like one swipe away, right at the fingertips. It's honestly a very nice experience and it makes me excited again for the future of smartphones

I hope that answers your question.

        • @portard: porn

        • "I'm so glad I never gave in to temptation and bought a Vive or Oculus"… I guess you don't know what you're missing then.

          Arizona Sunshine… AWESOME.
          Robo Recall… AMAZING.
          Obduction… uBer.
          Eve Valkyrie… OMG.
          Need I continue.

        • Yeah, many sensible features.
Fast charge is great, 30 mins to charge your phone.
I like the pressure sensitive hidden Home button, I enabled it to unlock. A single press to unlock is better than swiping.
The fingerprint sensor on the back can be used bring down the notification bar.
Always On display is still great. An essential feature IMO.
          Rounded screen corners look nice.
          Camera is still great.
          Etc.

      • The pixel is overpriced for last year's SoC.

You need the Phablet model to get QHD. The 5" model is just 1080p. No MicroSD.

If you're going to say 1080p is good enough, you haven't tried VR. Also, why not just get a cheaper Redmi/Xiaomi and flash the rom if that's good enough?

I think VR is a lot cooler than I initially expected. I thought it would just be another Wii that has a novelty that wears off quickly. I find myself going back to it more often than I thought I would. I would play it during my lunch breaks if I had a place to store it.

    • Lucky man

  • +2

I haven't used the pixel but the Samsung has come leaps and bounds from those days. I have a galaxy s7 before this and it was excellent too. Far better than the old galaxy phones that slowed down due to bloatware.

  • I got a s7 edge and because being a pain in the arse to get a decent case it is a great phone

Going through dramas with Mobileciti at the moment. Bought many phones from them, but they will not honour their ACL obligations. My Nexus 6p which is 4 months out of warranty is no longer working as it should. Battery shuts off anywhere under 40% battery, I have to use the loudspeaker for calls (no water damage, phone is in impeccable condition) as there is a known issue with the mic and I have woeful bluetooth reception.

They said they'll keep referring me to Huawei which IIRC is against ACL.

    • Beware of this mob guys. They don't know ACL and they will make you run through rings to get your phone fixed. There is a few disgruntled customers on WP like the guy above that has been having dramas. These guys making out to be a bald eagle but they are crows

Had the similar problem with a tab pro 8.4 with eBay braided USB cords. Stopped when I ceased using then.
Mine was initially under 40% but went eventually up to 65%.
Good luck with the claim anyway

    • Well I guess that's the reason why an actual store or experience centre is needed. With Samsung you can just go directly to any of their stores (Parramatta, Liverpool, City, and more) for warranty - they'll ship it out for you, give you a refurb replacement, or whatever's necessary. Want unlocked variant but bought from Optus (cause you hate that boot logo 'Optus' screen)? Go to their stores and tell them to flash the XSA version.

I've always preferred stores that have a physical presence, much easier to deal with.

      • +1

You're right. Although, online can still be ok. My Nexus 5 was a breeze to replace with the Google store.

        Dell are great, too.

    • How did you go with the replacement? I purchased my nexus 6p about 11 months ago (also from Mobileciti) and It would also shut off randomly with around 30% battery level. Had to send it to Huawei repair center to get fixed. It's been 3 weeks since it was sent and I'm still waiting for a replacement (whether that be a brand new 6p or a refurbished)…

I'm just wondering, I'm looking at this price of $944 ($1018 incl. del) at https://www.becextech.com.au/catalog/sams864gbblk-ins-p-8746…. Can anyone tell me why I shouldn't buy it from here?

Is it a unreliable shipper or are people missing this deal?

grey import. warranty issue if something goes wrong. and you can't claim TRS.

      • -1

What did you mean by grey import? It says it states that its Midnight Black or am I missing something.

And for warranty issue it has 1 year coverage or is it hard to claim that warranty and get it repaired.

        • +5

          Overseas non-Australian stock.
That 1yr warranty is probably a nightmare to claim against, as it is with the overseas seller and not Samsung Australia.
Samsung Australia wouldn't touch that phone.

        • @Fobsessive:

Why is Samsung so dodgy? Doesn't matter what country, Samsung is Samsung.

Just like how Apple is Apple no matter in Japan or USA or New Zealand!

        • @VEPeezy: The warranty is not worldwide warranty like Sandisk or Philips.

    • +2

Au stock, 2 yr Australian warranty. End of story!

    • Bought a phone for myself. Thanks the info guys!

    • The price difference is not big enough to give up local 2 year warranty. Also, their model might not have B28 if that matters to you.

  • +1

    Was $1050 per order.

  • +2

    Any s8+?

    • +1

Waiting for S8 Plus myself too!

  • +1

It was $1050, but still I will wait

mobileciti's website has these for 1139 and got office works to price match. Paid 1082 thanks!

    • Exactly what I am doing.
