won't run Windows 7 even if you want it to.

    • +1

      Then make it work!

    • Easy fix is to use Linux!

    • What about XP? An 8yo OS is just not vintage enough for my latest CPU 😂

  • +8

Intel has said you shouldn't overclock it so why don't they give you a fan??

    • +4

Probably expecting you to get a better cooling system

    • Intel's way of saving. Most will run aftermarket coolers any at this end of the market. My question is why would anyone want a stock cooler for high end CPUs?

      • +1

They could wear the cooler as a hat

      • high end Ryzen processors come equipped with some pretty decent stock air cooling, that don't sound like a jet engine. It comes with RGB lights, even.

  • Mine is overlooked at 5.1ghz with water and stays under 50*C

    • Out of interest, have you delidded yours?

I've got water-cooling too but really don't want to go into the (warranty-voiding) process of delidding.

As others have posted, some 7700K units suffer from crappy TIM and I want to understand how widespread it is.

      • +2

        Nope not delidded.
Running an AIO 240mm water system, on a z270g mobo.

  • got one with the coolermaster tx3 evo fan, would it be enough for normal use?

  • +2

At this price, I'd still go for the i5-7600K cpu.

  • Can anyone comment on Cpu requirement for the 1080? I've seen comments that even a 4790 is enough for a CPU intensive game on the 1080Ti.

    • +2

      Got a 4790k it's perfectly fine.

I wouldn't upgrade if you had one. That'd be a whole board and ram cost too.

      • Thanks for confirming scud.

    • I use a 4770k with my 1080ti, CPUs haven't really improved significantly over the past few generations.

    • Here's a recent article with measurements going all the way back to Phenom II.

      http://www.gamersnexus.net/guides/2898-amd-phenom-ii-cpu-rev…

They test with the GTX 1080.

  • Just bought one, been waiting for a decent deal after the ebay 20% deal. Have saved hundreds already lol.

  • +1

Thanks OP, pulled th pin, also been waiting for a good deal. Only 5 left now.

    • New system? just wanting to know your reasoning for picking this CPU considering the competition and overheating bug?

  • Does anyone know a non-painful to install fan/cooler we can buy for this?

Seems all the aftermarkets ones are so difficult to install now days.

    • Seems all the aftermarkets ones are so difficult to install now days.

How? Don't you just bolt it on top of the CPU and mount the fans to the case? That's what I did for the Corsair H110.

      • I'll give him credit, in the early days of closed loop coolers they were a bit shitty in design.
But you're right any recent ones are pretty straight forward.

      • Ah ok, that looks easy enough.

The one I bought was a real bitch a few Months ago though, ended up bending the pins on my cpu zzz…

I believe it was something like this one:
        https://www.amazon.co.uk/Thermaltake-Contac-Universal-Cooler…

Had to put screws at bottom of motherboard and on top and then a little slidy thing between the cooler and cpu.

  • This being Ozbargain, I have to say: you can get a complete high-end system off eBay for less than this ( i7-4770 exlease refurb) which runs at 80% of the speed, ie imperceptible difference.

Gains have really slowed to a crawl in the chip business. We used to get a doubling of speed every two years. The last few generation of Intel have been tiny increments, though integrated GPU improvements are better, if you use that. Only 25% better benchmarks in 3 generations. And overclocking has not been worthwhile since the Celeron 300A. Now get off my lawn.

    • This is where Moore's law comes to a halt. I guess they've found it hard to keep up and just added more cores to facilitate this.

      • Cores have not changed in a few generations.
They have managed to improve efficiency a little in Kaby Lake, which means a small bump in clock speed.
The real gains are in the graphics:

Kaby Lake features a new graphics architecture to improve performance in 3D graphics and 4K video playback.[4][16] It will add native HDCP 2.2 support,[17] along with fixed function decode of H.264, HEVC Main and Main10/10-bit, and VP9 10-bit and 8-bit video.[15][18][19][20] Hardware encode is supported for H.264, HEVC Main10/10-bit, and VP9 8-bit video. VP9 10-bit encode is not supported in hardware.

        • +2

No one would buy a 7700k to use the onboard graphics lol

        • @hippyhippy:

Yeah, that's what makes it so pointless as an upgrade form 5th or 6th gen :-)

The new NUCs with Kaby Lake make great HTPCs though!

        • Most of the stuff listed there will benefit you even if you're using a discrete card, as the CPU does the video en/decoding.

        • @UKn0Me:
Thanks! I stand corrected. Always assumed the addon graphics cards did that too.

  • +2

Honestly right now you'd be better to pick up an AMD 1700 8core for $429
until intel drops its 6 core consumer coffee lake CPU's around Nov / December

  • Have i really just missed this? Can't believe it! I literally was just waiting for my credit card! This is preposterous!

    • Sorry mate, they didn't have alot of stock to start with. Keep looking!
