If you think a small buzzing/static noise that worsens when you play loud videos will irritate you, please do not buy this laptop! I took the risk of purchasing it and even though everyone in my family can't hear it, I could and it would've driven me nuts.
I don't think it happens to all machines but no trusted reviews on the internet seem to mention or are even aware of this problem so beware! Such a shame I'm returning it under their 15 day return policy, it's otherwise a beautiful and perfect machine! :(

    • Hi, I'm getting one today, kinda nervous too, do you have to pay the return fee if it appears to have the mentioned problem? Thanks

So you have a sample of one, and you're the only person who can hear it. Based on this you're suggesting that people shouldn't buy this.

No issues with mine at all. More than happy with my XPS 13

      • Our office of 25 use Dell XPS 13. I would not buy one personally. Many issues related to the trackpad popping out, the hinge becoming very loose, overheating, throttling, fan noise, fan ball bearings.

        • +1

We only have a bout 5 in our office but haven't had any of these issues

Coil whine is endemic with this model. Not the only problem with this model (yellow/dull screen temperature), speaker rattling at higher volumes. Avoid this model like the plague.

I used to recommend Dell products highly. Since owning my XPS13 9350 I would not suggest them to anyone I know.
My XPS came with coil whine from the start. Bad when charging and also I would occasionally get a bad interference noise through the speakers when 2 finger scrolling with predominantly white pages.

Dell sent out a "tech" after some very lacklustre email service, they swapped the motherboard for a revised design which doesn't appear to resolved the issue.

To add to the experience, after the repair my laptop had such bad keyboard response time that a one finger typer could out speed the computers response. And the speakers stopped working/.

It has taken me 2 weeks to try and arrange a follow up to this.

Imo a good company would have taken the laptop back at my request to repair it, test, and then send it back once successfully working once again.

Instead I have countless back and forth emails with a different "tech support" person every evening.

There other laptops may be better but the XPS have too many issues, steer clear, especially with the substandard after sales support.

I can only assume their corporate service reps look after customers better.

Edit: Forgot the powering itself on when closed at random, running the battery down until I notice and force a hard shutdown with the power button. When this happens it won't even stay shutdown or asleep with software commands, it just defiantly starts up or wakes up again!

      • Sounds like you got a lemon. I would ask for a full replacement.

      • +1

I had the same issue. Technician came out twice to replace motherboard. The motherboard was a refurbished model from another Dell which is going to go back and be put into someone else's laptop. Just passing the issue around. Getting a full refund though.

        • I'm on my 3rd motherboard, second pair of speakers, third keyboard, second keyboard IO card, and still dramas.
The tech was good to deal with that they sent out the last two times. Sounds like it's a dead set lemon.

Waiting for Dell to make contact and sort out a resolution.

@JF: How long have you had it? I would ask for either a brand new replacement or a full refund. This is beyond ridiculous.

        • @lostn: About 10 months in. They have booked another service with a whole heap of the same parts again as well as a daughter board this time. TBH I don't think I'd want another one if they offered a replacement, I think I'd take the refund and look for a replacement elsewhere.

    • Thanks for the warning. I've heard about it before but you articulated it best.

I think I will wait for 2018 models and see if they've fixed it. They must be aware of the issue.

  • Would you be able to get the powerbuy discount on it too?

I had an XPS12 and, while it was a good little laptop, 256GB is nowhere near enough on-board memory. You lose about 40% to the backup partition and another chunk for Windows. Save yourself some heartache and wait for something larger.

    • +3

102Gb recovery partition? You must be high or stupid, lol.
Most recovery partitions I've seen are around 10Gb. Regardless, you can just create a recovery USB stick and remove the 'onboard' one.
Windows 10 is around 20Gb at most once installed and updated as well.
256Gb is the bare minimum these days though, won't bother with a 128Gb.

      • My work laptop (running windows 7 admittedly) has windows enterprise, OEM crap, full ms office, all three major browsers, ms sql, mysql, countless other IT and dev tools, and two years worth of accumulated junk, and I've used 220GB of the drive.

My personal laptop running win10 has a 128gb drive. It's got all three major browsers, adobe imaging products, and some media on it. It's used 72GB. Edit; just realised it's got 13GB or raw images on it, so would be 59gb without those.

      • +1

256 Gb is pretty standard for laptops. Many have 128 GB.

    • +1

really.. because I manage with 128gb. I can add a SD card, carry a USB stick or simply upgrade HDD as necessary. That said, would not touch XPS laptops, my opinion is they are flawed, over priced and the QC is lacking..

      • Had my XPS 13 for around 1 year. I still think it's the best thing ever. Gorgeous display with infinity edge, small, light, powerful enough. I would buy it again in a second.

  • 60WHr battery (up to 22 hours per full charge)

Up to 22? What do you have to do to get 22 hours? Run it on 1% brightness and have your screen saver on the whole time?

    • Important Details
Based on testing using the Mobile Mark 2014 battery life benchmark test. For more information about this benchmark test, visit www.bapco.com. Actual battery life may be significantly less than the test results and varies depending on product configuration and use, software, usage, operating conditions, power management settings and other factors. Maximum battery life will decrease with time.
