I get the sarcasm, but Bing - seriously? Sending someone to the crotchless, homeless, blind drunk of search engines really isn't doing them a favour.

        • +2

it just points out that even the crotchless, homeless, blind drunk of search engine can give you the answer you seek…

      Listing states the following:

Depending on how you use your laptop, your battery life will vary. When you are using productivity applications, like Word or Excel, experience the longest battery life of any 13-inch with up to 22 hours of continual use on a FHD model. Enjoy up to 13 hours of battery life when streaming Netflix content or browsing the web with Microsoft Edge. Add an additional 11 hours, 30 minutes with the optional Dell Power Companion.

      Comment on previous deal:

battery life is getting me a full day at work with chrome browsing, outlook and other software on constantly.

  • Good price for this spec

I just bought the zenbook UX430UQ.
It's hard to figure out zenbooks naming convention but the 430 is the sucessor to the 330 and the 'uq' means it has a dedicated graphics card while the 'ua' means it doesnt.

      It's a 14inch screen in a 13inch chassis, This dell is a 13inch screen in an 11inch chassis.

So damn happy with it. It's lighter, has dedicated graphics, thinner, and it runs beautifully :)

      • How much battery time do you get with it?

        • +1

About 9 hours I feel. I've been installing and copying files non stop since I got it so it's hard to say

        • @Jatacid: Did your Zenbook UX430UQ come with a fingerprint scanner? I can't seem to find which models have them and they label only "select" models have it.

        • @mattoo: Honestly no, the 430uq kinda went under the radar as far as launch goes. Which is a big shame because it's an amazing computer. Australia has only imported a very very limited number and I couldnt even find the i7 version here. Luckily I only do light coding so survive without it but still surprising. I've never liked fingerprint readers anwyays - they're a bit of a gimmick imo. Definitely not a make-or-break deal for this device, but that's just me lol.

      • Hey, I was thinking about getting the ux430UQ, can you tell me how the noise is on this laptop? Just when you're browsing in a quiet room. I read a review that stated the fan noise was pretty loud and it kind of put me off buying it. Thanks in advance!

        • Hardly noticeable at all. No different to any other laptop with a fan. Honestly a lot of laptop reviews seem like they're trying to find something to complain about lol. Besides - I'd rather a fan or two for heat dissipation than relying on a gimped processor that doesn't make heat

  • I assume the invoice is for the discounted price? Also what's the cheapest way of adding an ethernet port to one? The adapter isn't cheap and the dock is even worse.

    • My Dell invoice from this $319.20 Dell eBay deal showed as the full price before the eBay code:

      Subtotal $ 362.73 GST$ 36.27 Total incl. GST $ 399.00

So this should show full price $1,799.00 after the 10% off but before the 20% off with CMUM20

    • I got this laptop at the same price in the last deal. The invoice was for full price, which I reclaimed GST for about $163.

      • +1

Interesting - claiming back GST and salary sacrificing the rest which could be interesting if it's the full amount, more back in hand than I paid to start and reduce taxable income even more.

        • how do you claim GST and salary sacrifice through your firm?

        • @roh008: Give them notice I want to do it - have my supervisor sign off that it's okay. Then buy it, get the full amount reimbursed then charged the full amount minus GST over how ever many pays I tell them to.

Can any one recommend a good case and/or accessories for this laptop?

    • +2

I bought mine in 2015. The case from DELL's pretty much theft at $50. It's apparently similar size as a Macbook, so after reading many reviews/forums about XPS 13 cases settled on https://www.amazon.com/Incase-CL60052-Canvas-Sleeve-Macbook/…

While one of the reviews says it definitely doesn't fit, from my experience it's a snug fit. The zipper just gets over the corners, and does so pretty easily. The padding's really thick on it as well, which makes it really protective.

As long as they haven't suddenly changed the size of the XPS 13, you should be right. Feel free to PM me for more deets.

      • Just wondering if you got it from Amazon as per link? For me, it states that that item does not ship to Australia.

        • Damn sorry I just checked, they won't ship to Sydney anymore. They did before unfortunately.

Any news on whether coil whine has been fixed yet?

    • +1

I replaced Win10 with Linux, and I have never experienced the dreaded coil whine in my <2 months of usage.

      • +3

        That's a workaround, not a fix.

    • +1

Pretty sure it hasn't, and Dell is absolutely adamant that it's not a real issue. I could hear it from a display unit in JB HiFi.

    • Absolutely has not been fixed. I found a similar deal back in November last year and made a purchase before knowing about the coil whine issue. I am now on my third machine going through the process of getting a refund. It is such a shame because the specs of these machines are great. Build quality absolutely lets them down.

      • That sounds awful. I'm thinking about getting the ASUS Zenbook UX430UQ - Similar specs to XPS 13, has dedicated GPU (albeit not the best) and a 14in screen in a 13in body. Comes down to $1320 after discount.

    • I got one of these when it was on sale in Feb. Have been using it since then with windows10 and have not noticed any coil whine.

  • Can someone explain to me the difference between an i5 and an i7 for this laptop? I'm not very informed with laptops but i'm thinking long term with this as i'll be using it for uni and to sometimes play low end games.

    • -5

i5 is fine for low end games. most games don't run on i7, and those that do usually just have it as an option to optimise performance.
if you do a lot of video editing though, get an i7

      • +6

That applies to desktop CPUs. The mobile CPUs are a different story, particularly depending on what letter is on the end of the CPU model.

The i5-7200U and the i7-7500U are exactly the same chip, only that the I7 is clocked at a higher frequency and has a bit more cache. This comes out to about 5% more performance.

  • MS Office is trial. No dedicated Home/End, Page Up/Down keys, so fiddly for Microsoft Office power users.

  • +2

Got this on the last deal, this is one awesome laptop. Gorgeous display and excellent build quality.

Wiped it and installed Linux Mint as the Ubuntu developer edition has identical hardware.

9 hours average batter life with heavy use.
Everything just works and is compatible with current kernel.

I haven't had any coil whine.

  • -2

Great product if you hate your mom and want to drive her crazy with the coil whine

    • +4

      mum

      • maybe she's american

    • what percent are impacted by coil whine?

      • +1

Hard to say. A lot of people don't report it because they don't notice it, don't know what it is, or don't know how to listen for it, or are unaware that it isn't normal. Or they have the volume up and don't hear it.

        • Thanks for that. So it's not overly noticeable. I'd be ok if the only way to hear the whine is if everything around me was silent and I had to put my ear to the laptop to hear it.

        • @roh008:

The one I set up for a client was exactly like this. If the room was dead quiet and I put my head about a foot away directed towards the keyboard I could just hear it, and I have pretty sensitive hearing. It wouldn't ever bother me in normal usage, unless I was using it in bed late at night to read or something like that.

Other than that it was one of the best laptops I have ever used. Fantastic overall quality.

  • +1

What about the other XPS 13 models on sale?
Are any that much better? No gaming, but need specs for CAD / rendering.

  • thinking about buying this one instead ASUS Chromebook Flip C302CA-DHM4 12.5-Inch Touchscreen Intel Core m3 with 64GB storage and 4GB RAM

i know it's a totally different league but i dont play games, just use google office and chrome browser so it would be a huge saving.

    • Is the Asus Chromebook Flip even available in Australia yet? Or ordering from overseas?

  • I heard they were making new motherboards in October last year that would address the coil whine. Should it be a non-issue with these models?

  • How do I claim this back on tax? Going to use it 100% for work ;)

  • +1

I've had a few issues with Windows updates failing and wasting 3 or so hours in the process and poor network performance with hyper-v and having to remove the bridge when wanting to just use the base OS. Decided to ditch this as a work machine and bought the little 14" Lenovo that was on sale a while back with the 16gb of ram. I'll keep this as my internet surfing chill machine as battery is good and res is nice but going to do a full wipe and try to apply updates before installing any apps. Oh and the card slot caved in so have to use a dongle for that now..

    • Which Lenovo deal was that ? I'm looking to replace my Lenovo Helix soon and looking for another Lenovo in the 13->14 inch range. I find Lenovo a bit heavier but very tough which comes in handy for me.

      • It was an upgraded E470, 14" fhd ips, 256gb ssd, 16gb ram, i7 for $898 delivered. Pretty sure it was posted here. I'm thinking the same as you, might be a little more rugged but should hold up better as a work machine.

        • +1

Thanks for that. Covers my needs perfectly. Will be a work machine that does a lot of traveling plus I find that the Lenovo keyboards have the best feel. Big plus.

  • This or the Asus zenbook guys?

  • -2

All this cpu power and no graphics card :( pointless

    • Get the XPS 15 instead.

  • With Salary sacrifice, this is a great deal.

  • Any idea what it would cost to upgrade the memory to 16GB? How hard would it be?

    • +1

The RAM is soldered on so it's essentially impossible to upgrade it yourself. If you want more RAM you have to buy the model with 16GB but it's super expensive last time I looked.
      https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Dell+XPS+13+Teardown/36157

      • I wonder if they would cancel the order if mentioned that? It sucks that they do that, and the fact that the battery is not user replaceable.

I don't need the power but I need the battery, if this battery will still give me 8 hours in its third year, I'd be OK. But somehow I doubt that, even though I am conscious of charging etiquette.

I have an HP Envy 13' that still gives me 3-4 hours after three and a half years and considering it's fallen off the roof of my car, by far the best Notebook I have ever owned. But the battery doesn't help me when I travel for work.

        Thanks

  • Another ebay seller that puts the price back up when special discounts are offered. Price now $1999 rather than $1799 before CMUM20 discount. Ebay is becoming a joke with it's promotions.

    • Weird, I'm not seeing that:

      List price: AU $1,999.00
You save: AU $200.00 (10% off)
      Now:AU $1,799.00

It's been running at that price for 2 days now also.

  • +1

Yes weird, as I clicked link and price was $1999 but now I click it is back to $1799. Thanks for that as was considering buying at that price.

  • Hi, this must seem obvious, though does this include the charger with the laptop?

    • +1

Yes listed as AC Adapter in specs tab:

      A/C Adapter
      45W AC adapter

  • New deal post for the new sale if anyone missed this one.
