Free 500MB Data Sim Card for Japan - iPhone 5/6/7 Only - WAmazing

200

WAmazing is a recently launched company in Japan offering free sim cards with 500MB of data to tourists. However, there are a few restrictions:

  • iPhone 5/6/7 only
  • Must download app and register at least two months prior to arrival
  • Can only be collected from Narita (Tokyo) airport. (may expand later)
  • Everything appears to be in Chinese language

If you can deal with all of those things though it's a pretty good deal considering the usual prices of data sims in Japan. It uses the Docomo network which has the best coverage out of all networks in Japan.

    • The free SIM is supposedly available to Hong Kong and Taiwan residents only. The app is not available in the Australian App Store. I was able to download it from the HK app store, but haven't checked if there are any further checks for eligibility.
    • The app appears to be Japanese only, at least the user registration part. You'd think an app targeted at HK/TW tourists would have an English or Chinese interface.
    • Even if your arrival date is less than 2 months away, you can still get a free SIM if you answer some survey.
    • The free SIM is valid for 5 days from activation. This can be extended by purchasing additional data (from ¥990 for 500MB).
    • Thanks. Their plans say that they intend to make it available in more languages in the lead up to the 2020 Olympics.

      • I wouldn't mind trying this if it was available from KIX. I'm flying there in a few months. Too bad it's NRT only.

    • Also, you need to enter your credit card details during user registration. They claim you won't be charged if you don't purchase any additional data.

not sure if it is worth it when you factor in travel costs. flight to japan is $1000 so its about $2/mb

Think of it this way, you pay the standard roaming charges (e.g. $3/MB for Telstra) and travel to Japan for free!

    • Haha clearly everyone missed a perfectly legitimate joke! I had a good chuckle =P

  • Just bought my data sim from http://www.bmobile.ne.jp/english/

Last time when I was in Japan (Osaka), there's old people that offer as guides around areas (our hotel recommended one). We did it for a couple of days and it was free (but you pay for their food, transportation and entry to wherever you go) BUT the guy we had, gave us his wifi access (sort of like Telstra Air) and we were using that the rest of the trip.. might be worth looking into it
