Has this been officially released yet or do you need to still do the hacks to get it playing nicely in Australia?

    • It's not officially released in Australia, you just need a postcode that matches our timezone such as 96910 for Guam.

      • Also, when asking for things like the weather, all you have to do is add your location, eg, "in Sydney", to the question:

"Alexa, what is the weather in Sydney?"

"Right now, in Sydney, Australia, it's 16 degrees with mostly cloudy skies. Today's forecast has intermittent clouds, with a high of 21 degrees and a low of 16 degrees."

        Works well.

      • It's easy now, all timezone settings are available to use.

For weather you can also add the Big Sky skill, set it to your location and then just "Alexa, open Big Sky" will give you a detailed local forecast for the day.

My echos have their location is set to Guam for AEST. With the Yeelight skill, you can control your xiaomi yeelights with alexa.

    • +2

You can set the timezone correctly now. Not the location AFAIK, but you don't have to muck about with Guam.

      • +1

Yep, still need a US/UK/German location, but all timezones all available.

  • Damn, I've just bought a Raspberry Pi Zero and a Raspberry Pi 3 to make my own!

    • I saw that project. What mic's will you use?

Ive got google home and without a speaker, i wouldn't use it 80% of the time. Not just for music, but setting alarms, asking questions (well getting the kids to ask it their inane questions) , etc.

So IMHO you need the actual echo too, just the dot would be handy for other parts of the house (turning lights in/off, adding things to lists, etc)

      • The Dot has a speaker, it's just not very good. Perfectly fine for anything other than music though and it's a cinch to connect it to a Bluetooth speaker or any speaker accepting an AUX input.

You are paying for the microphone tech though - anything you build at home (for similar money) won't be anywhere near the Dot in hearing you properly.

        • Yea the microphone is definitely the selling point.
I set up Alexa on my Raspberry Pi 3 last night…much more fun playing around with it that way, and was a good learning experience

        • Yeah 7 microphone array or something isn't it? I can call out Alexa from a room on the other side of the house and she'll light up (though rarely correctly hears the command properly at that distance).

Oh how the governments must love it, people willingly installing high power bugs in our homes.. :)

      • The Dot will work independently of the full sized Echo, it doesn't rely on it

        • i didnt realise it had a speaker. I thought it was just a mic extension of the Echo. handy for the bathroom where I have my most intelligent thoughts :-)

  • Do we need an AU plug for these ?

    • +1

100-240V input, so pin adaptor, or any other 1A USB power supply.

    • +1

It comes with a separate USB power adaptor - so just use an AU USB adaptor instead.

    • +1

The Echo Dot just runs off a stock standard Micro-USB connector (unlike the bigger tower Echo, or the Google Home, which use custom power supplies with voltages of 15V/1.4A and 16.5V/2A respectively).

Lacking the big speakers of its older brother, it can get away with standard 5V USB, so virtually any USB charger will do, such as one from an old phone / iPod / gadget.

(Even if you do get one of the bigger tower Echoes or Google Home, the power adapters themselves are auto-ranging from 110-240V, so you just need a US to AU plug adapter.)

  • Wonder what it'll cost when Amazon open for business in Australia… Probably not any less than this

    • thats what im tossing up, wait for it to be released officially here or get it now…

      • get it now. when it arrives sell it on freabay and buy local stock. reckon you wont even be out of pocket

      • +1

Don't see any point in waiting unless you're only going to use it for things that need your actual location set.

I doubt it's going to be any cheaper, and who knows when Amazon is actually going to set up in Australia.

As far as hardware, it's just an internet connected bunch of microphones, all the smarts are in the cloud, so no reason you should need to replace with local stock when the time comes.

  • Rumours are Amazon is getting into the advertising biz and will therefore have as much incentive as Boogle to collect every single thing it can about you in order to serve advertising content you don't want which will manipulate you into spending more money without you being aware that this happened.

    • +1

Even without so called rumours anyone who uses this can kiss their privacy goodbye. Then again, if you have a mobile phone and use the internet that ship has already sailed.

    • Nothing new here, Amazon has been tracking purchases since the mid 1990s.

Their shopping related data analytics are second to none, including Google.

It's just their advertising in the past was for their own store…

  • Any fresh news about our New Mexican friend Jeff Bezos?

  • Latest update also enables Alexa to Alexa calling (or Alexa app). You'll need to install manually from here since it's not available on the Play Store for Australia.

  • Does it work standalone or do i need get the Echo first?

    • +1

Standalone. It's just got a little tinny speaker, but you can line out or bluetooth to something better if you want.
I bluetooth to in-ceiling speakers, kids love it when the house talks to them :)

      • Thanks, bought two, one for living and one for study room

  • Where can I get one for the OzBargain price? Is it really that good?

  • Looks like it's back to USD $39.99 + postage again.
