    Cheap as fush n chups

Anyone know how reliable these 5tb drives are?
And how warranty with seagate works?

    • +1

      3 years warranty.

I have a 4tb backup plus portable. Just claimed my warranty replacement after a year and a half with it plugged into my PC throughout the period.

Sure whether that played a part.

      • +1

Oh I meant that these are coming from Amazon US
So it'd basically be international warranty and I didn't know if Seagate covered that

      • +1

Hi, how was the warranty process? Did you have to send it internationally at your own cost? How long did the replacement took?

        • I got mine from Bing Lee, so it was just a straight swap on the spot.

So not applicable for ones from Amazon. I'd imagine you'll have to pay the shipping to the Amazon vendors though…

  • i wonder if these are running with seagates new helium drives

    • +1

According to a review I read, they're using seagates new barracuda 2.5" drives
And I'm fairly certain that means they're not helium drives

      • Is that good or bad?

        • +2

A helium drive would be better for sure
However I believe they're currently limited to 8 and 10tb desktop grade drives
          Really high end

@Rail Rider95: Really high pitched too

        • +3

          @aboabo: Lol who negged u?

  • +6

The 4tb is at a pretty good price point too. USD $109.99 + $7.08 shipping.

    • is it with new barracuda 2.5" drives?

    • What about the 2tb?

    • +2

Yeah, I bought 2 of those from Amazon. They do about 90-100MB/s sequential writes. Pretty decent. I dunno if it is worth paying $US36.08($AU48.39) for an extra terabyte. I know there are times when you really need the extra capacity at any cost, but for all other times, I would go for the cheaper 4TB drive.

  • still waiting for SSD deal
    any recommen?

    • Had a look yesterday and they all seem a bit expensive ATM?

      • +2

They will drop fast in 6-18 months or so.

There are a bunch of HDD factories being converted to make SSDs. That's why both HDD and SSD pricing is high at the moment.

      • Yeah - I think if you want the performance of an SSD you shouldn't be using it externally. As a backup solution though, this should be good enough (for me anyway).

      • yes they are 10 to 20% higher atm

  • Can anyone verify that these are normal SATA drives inside?

    Why do I ask?
Some previous Seagate portable HDDs have had the USB to SATA adaptor built into the drive PCB making them unusable with normal SATA controllers in PC, consoles etc.
Most other vendors use normal 2.5" SATA drives with the USB to SATA bridge on a seperate and easily removed PCB.
This becomes even more of an issue if you ever need to recover data from one of these things.

    • Is that a recent thing or a much older issue ? I thought this was the case with 2.5" drives in the sub 1T range (e.g. 320G or 500G).

It's definitely an issue for data recovery and also stops you reusing the case and bits (i've had exactly this issue with an old backup drive)

All WD 2.5" external drives have the USB connector soldered to the PCB instead of SATA so as you said, you can't use them with normal SATA controllers.

Seagate external drives used to be normal drives with a built-in SATA to USB adapter. However, I read a Reddit Post claiming that Seagate is now just like WD with SATA connector replaced by USB. But, when challenged by other readers to provide proof, there was only silence.

Unless Seagate made that change recently, I believe Seagate drives should still be normal ones with SATA connector.

From this post it looks like it's shuckable:

        https://forums.anandtech.com/threads/shucking-hds-is-over.24…

out comes a drive (ST5000LM000) with a sata port!

      • My thinking Seagate might have been a classic case of transference… the ST3000DM001 situation burned me so badly that Seagate now sits one below IBM Deskstars in my mental ranking of drive reliability.

  • For those looking for the 4TB… what about the WD for an extra $10USD over the seagate 4TB?? Heard the WDs are more reliable yeah?

The disadvantage is that the drive inside doesn't have a SATA connector so if the USB interface dies, you can't just rip it out of the enclosure and connect it to the SATA controller in your PC.

Also, from what I have read, these drives have "always on" hardware encryption built into the enclosure. So, if that encryption chip in the enclosure breaks, you can't access your data unless you find an identical enclosure.

  • another option for those not needing portable drive.. $139+del from Amazon 6TB Hub desktop Seagate. I'm very tempted to buy.

    • Nice deal, nice archive drive inside and not to hard to remove if you wish to.
