I was looking at the ALDI Queen bed size electric blanket myself. They have had multiple recalls in the past (years 2010,2012 and 2013), under a different brand name though, Lumina.

    https://www.productsafety.gov.au/recall/aldi-lumina-electric…

Wonder how the quality control is these days, dont want to risk being electrocuted.

Productreview.com.au also lists some bad reviews for ALDI electric blankets.

Don't know about the recall or this particular brand but Product Review is useless, plenty of decent products get trashed.

      🔥Very worrying🔥
Aldi products can always be a gamble (but easy to return). However - when they are a fire hazard… its too high a price to pay.

The number of years of Aldi trademarked "Lumina" electrical blankets have been recalled is concerning. There is little difference between electric blankets & these heating devices as far as electrical safety is concerned.

The "brand" is not important as most electrical products sold by Aldi are Aldi products - with their different trademark added. Aldi buy usually unseen electrical product from different suppliers, who source it as cheaply as possible to meet the specifications.

Worryingly, it took up to 6 years for the electrical fault to be detected!

OzBargainers are cautious of installing light bulbs etc from overseas - personal heating devices are more of an issue. These did have Australian electrical approval number.

    • Holy crap.
I've got an Aldi 'Easy Home' electric blanket Model TTS-2X60D from June 2014 and it hasn't killed me yet, though one of the screens is fading for some reason (can't see the settings very well). Only 12 months warranty…

BTW i can't sleep with these on - but still useful if reading at night or whatever.

I have the throw blanket from last year. It's pretty good when lying on the sofa watching telly on the evening. It does get quite hot under it when you crank it up to 8 or 9!

    • Do you throw or twirl when you first use it?

These are pretty amazing for netflix and chill during winter

  • This just happened in the news
Not sure how I feel about wanting to buy one now…

  • These are fantastic (I have an earlier Sunbeam one). Use it on the couch or for a super quick warm up of the bed (just pop it in 10 minutes before you get in, then take it out). My cat LOVES it.

    • I'm buying two of them, one for me and one for my dog Jake.

      • One for each ear.

I just bought a Jason electric blanket from Catchoftheday as I had some referral credit to use up. It works well, is a known brand, cheaper than ALDI and is fully fitted. My last electric blanket wasn't fully fitted and was attached with straps which eventually gave way (was a cheapy Coles brand). Not sure if the ALDI one is fully fitted but if not I'd probably skip.

And you didn't post it for us before buying one?

Pretty disappointed in you Neil, I thought Community Managers were for the community.

    • I think using a fully fitted heated throw might make it a bit more difficult to get up from the couch ;-)

Agree should be much better than Aldi's electric blankets. Especially so after the fire safety recalls.

      • I use a Doona Suit when I'm cold and not in bed. Cheaper than running the heater or electric blanket although it looks ridiculous.

        • +1

You need a wireless heated robe, I actually think Scotty should give all the staff these as standard issue in Ozbargain orange.

        • I thought you meant a Doner Suit - so warm AND tasty, but leaves garlic sauce everywhere. (We all look ridiculous sometimes.)

        • @Infidel:

          but leaves garlic sauce everywhere

          Garlic repels creepy crawlies.

  • Would have been a definite purchase until I saw those safety recalls :(

Anyone got recommendations for a trusted / bang for buck throw/blanket that hasn't been a fire hazard?

EDIT: Just noticed Neil's post but would ideally be a bricks and mortars that I can pick up from on the weekend.

    • A lot of the popular brands have had safety recalls, not just ALDI: https://goo.gl/QD526O

      ALDI—Lumina Electric Blanket
BIG W (Woolworths Limited)—Abode Electric Blanket
Sunbeam Corporation Limited—Heritage & Regency Electric Blanket
      BIG W—Living Essentials Electric Blanket
      Kmart—Homemaker Electric Blanket
Gerard Sourcing & Manufacturing—LINDA Electric Blanket

The Jason brand Neil posted are pretty good but more expensive for a throw.

Spotlight carry Jason throws and blankets.

      • Yep! Was just about to post that!

        Combine with either:

Works out okay @ $50 or $40 each respectively

        Cheers Scab

      • I bought one of those Jason fully fitted ones from spotlight during this promotion. It was ~$38 for a king size one, after discounts on the sale price. Personally I hate it, the bottom 1/5 th doesn't heat up, as there are no wires! Its a poor design. We've to foldup our legs. My $50 Kmart electric blanket is going strong for the 7th year, I only bought this as we've a king bed now.

  • Is there wires in the blanket? Wondering how to go about washing these

    • +1

There's heating wires but the lead can be removed so you can wash it.

      Gentle machine or hand wash.

    • +1

Yes, they have wires. The control comes off. All the ones I've seen you can wash, but I wouldn't do it too often, because I reckon the internal wires would crack.

      • ooh thanks. I will see if I can get over the mindset of 'no wires in the wash'!

    • Probably hand wash with quick air dry on a hot day is the best bet i'd say.
It's only if it's wet for too long or bent like Beckham that i think you'd have problems…

      • ive tried to handwash a towel before and it got heavy I could barely lift it, i cant imagine how a whole blanket would go lol :#

  • Will this burn my house down?

    • Guaranteed or you can take it back for a full refund.

  • Noticed no Double bed size listed (under Aldi) does this means that Queen size can be used for Double bed.

    • No.

  • So I went to my local store which is about a half hour drive and got there at 9AM hoping to buy a throw.

No stock, not a single one so I left empty handed.

So ticked off, I was really looking forward to some warmth, now I have to freeze my arse off.

Plenty of electric blankets but no throws.

    • Maybe they hadn't put them out yet? That's happened a couple of times at my local and they've gone and got the stock from out the back when I've asked.

There were lots when I went yeasterday (most were interested in the regular fitted type blankets). Sorry you missed out. :(

      • Thanks.

I was so looking forward to this throw, I've been practicing the entire week by throwing my blanket around.

        Getting pretty good too.

    • Best to ask staff if you can't see what you want. Stock may not be on display - sometimes kept out the back or at checkouts, especially on first day of sale. I've been surprised by what I've found out the back of a few stores.

  • So I went to another store yesterday and they had a heap of throws, so I bought one.

Really excited driving home with it in the boot of my car, I wanted to pull over and throw it around me on the way home.

When I got home I started throwing it; I threw it to the left and I threw it to the right, I threw it in the middle and I threw it all about.

Gotta say, these things are awesome and a cheap way to stay toasty warm all night.

Thank you ALDI, I love German supermarketeers.

  • Purchased one yesterday and half of the blanket wouldn't heat. Just got a replacement but thinking the quality isn't good enough to keep it.

    • Quality is fine on my one, I actually checked the more expensive brands and I couldn't see the difference.
