Been on the market for this particular variant of the XPS 15 9560. It's a powerful laptop with a GPU that will allow for some light gaming to be done on the go, whilst still being slim and light. If you just want similar specs but don't care about form factor, some better deals to be had elsewhere, but I am yet to see anything quite this portable with quite this much power being offered by many others. And at just over 25% off (RRP), the price is just about right…

Not a bad price at all.. paid $2200 on Dell DFO for As-new.

Excuse my ignorance. But outside of doubling the SSD and the 4K screen, what does this model have over

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/309816

    to justify $900 price difference?

edit The GF1050 will struggle with 4K gameplaying

Different intended application, the XPS is a Multimedia laptop, whilst the Inspiron is a dedicated gaming laptop. the build quality on the XPS is top notch, a sleek aluminum design.

The price difference jusitifcation comes down to personal preference of course, the XPS is the premium model, its meant to look pretty and be expensive.

    • The GPU is stronger on the other once as well. If you want 4K maybe spend the difference on a 4K display.

It's 0.5kg lighter and half the thickness (XPS 15 - 2kg, 17 X 357 X 235mm; Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming - 2.62kg, 25.44 X 384.9 X 274.73mm) - like I said, there are definitely better deals to be had elsewhere if you just want the similar specs and aren't picky about the form factor. Also premium build quality and higher quality screen (IGZO panel with 100% Adobe RGB colour gamut, as well as 4X the number of pixels).

Definitely go for the Inspiron if you just want a higher performance laptop and don't mind it being thicker or heavier though.

EDIT: Yes, the 1050 is definitely for LIGHT gaming only - 4k is pretty much completely out of the question. But for photo editing which I plan to use this for, it could work well.

  • I returned my XPS15 due to overheating and it shutting itself down constantly. Got an alienware 15 from DFO and couldnt be happier.

Be cautious as the XPS15 is a great laptop but i wouldnt use it as a 'gaming' laptop

    • the xps15 is a business laptop, its not intended for heavy gaming, ofcourse its going to overheat. good idea to get a gaming laptop if u plan to do gaming. all the best.

      • the point is it cannot do any gaming without overheating. it overheated in windows without anything running.

  • Would the 20% off ebay deals beat this price? Thinking of pulling the trigger on this :)

They never include this specific variant in the eBay listings from what I can tell - only ever the base model with 256gb SSD and 56wHr battery, or the ridiculous 1tb SSD model which goes for over $3k usually.

    Perhaps Lenovo's X1 Carbon 5th Gen?

    • Definitely a few contenders on the market - the Dell has a GTX 1050 though. My gaming habit is getting the better of me in this decision making process…

I grabbed the Gigabyte Aero recently.
Under 2cm, under 2Kg… For a i7-quad, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD and GTX1060 card PLUS the largest battery they can legally cram into a laptop, so it goes all day!

As the regretful owner of a 4K laptop, I have to advise that it's more pain than pleasure. Frankly, the market just isn't fully embracing 4K in laptops as yet and as the consumer, you wont get the benefits, in exchange for the MASSIVE trade offs.

After 2 weeks, I just tuned all gfx settings to 1080p and still cop the battery burn of the 4k screen.

    Pros
    - Good for drawing
    - Good for crisp media (gaming and movies)
    - Windows 10 scales well to 4K on their own apps
    - Looks really nice and is noticeable

    Cons
    - Unless you have NBN, good luck with your 4K streaming
    - Battery cops a beating unless you tune the settings to be meticulously stingy (I average 80% less battery on 4K than not)
    - Really doesn't add much value in gaming over a smoother and more detailed 1080p experience
    - Many common apps have to use scaling to look acceptable in 4K and most often than not, you'll find yourself changing resolution to 1080p to run apps in intended resolution anyway (Adobe CC apps will strangely still look aweful in 4K)

Obviously this isn't my MSI machine, but a few considerations I advise the buyer to consider and be confident that they can live.

    • Honestly, 4K on a 15" screen is an overkill. I've got a Toshi Satellite 4K touch myself and its unusable at 100% scaling/DPI because everything is so small. You really need a high end Graphics card to power it properly if you want it for anything smooth or gaming.

      • I have 4k on my new S8 and can tell the difference when toggling between HD and 4k settings.

        • the S8 is 2k, not 4k

    • yeah I wish the 1080p version of the XPS 15 had touch capability.

    • Honestly I didn't even think about this, I was just lured in by the AdobeRGB coverage and brightness and touch capability and assumed that Windows 10 would have evolved to handle 4k by now (bold assumption now that I think about it). I imagine I'd probably end up just running with the resolution set to 1080p anyway for the reasons you've suggested (I intend to use it for photo editing while on trips and light gaming maybe).

Back when I bought my last laptop (Asus Zenbook UX32VD) it was one of the few 13" laptops around with a 1080p panel and at the time people were suggesting that 1080p is way too overkill and will be unusable because of the scaling making everything tiny, much like what people say about 4k 15" panels. Maybe in time this will turn out the same and slowly developers will optimise their apps for ultra high density displays like this, but until then I guess it's worth taking this into consideration at least.

There are horror stories all over the internet regarding the lack of quality control and terrible customer support with this laptop. The keyboard is pretty horrible as well if you are used to Thinkpad keyboards. Overpriced and poor choice IMO.

    • What would you recommend over this? I had either this or the Razer blade in mind, but had heard bad things about the Razer blade.

      • Any of the Thinkpad T or X series, to be honest. You wont get powerhouse performance, but you will get reliability, durability and a best in class keyboard. Also they have options which are much lighter and more portable. Wait for a coupon/deal on OzBargain for one of those, and put the money saved into a desktop if you want something powerful. Best of both worlds..

I am really interested in XPS 15 with FHD rather than 4K with better RAM/SSD (16/32GB + 512/1TB) for business use. Online listing does not allow me to change any of these specs unfortunately… I don't need touch.

Do I have to call to change these specs, and charge additional?
