WINTER15 does not work for me.

    • WINTER15 works for me. Thanks

You could also get the 2TB portable if you're eligible for the WINTER15 code. Add on a $1 item and you can get it for $85 currently.

      • The 2TB (expansion) seagate is known for beeping issues?

        • I thought that was the desktop version of the 2TB Expansion which had issues such as that beeping?. Desktop version being the one with the 3.5" internal HDD inside of it.

The 2TB portable (one with a 2.5" HDD inside of it) should be fine.

can this be opened easily to remove the drive for a NAS?

    • why would you want to do that? These hard drive is not designed for NAS.
In term of opening the casing. These drives were not designed for accessible, so you might have to break all the clips trying to get it open.

      • Agreed. Get a WD RED and be done with it. That said, I've got a few wdiddle'd WD Greens in a NAS for 12 mnths plus, and no issues yet, though I'm slowing replacing them with bigger WDReds.

        It's called shucking.
Have used this method to fill many hp microservers over the years

      • +2

        Because it is cheap storage.

      • +2

You do this for the lower cost benefits. Works fine in NAS and with proper backup practices it doesn't really matter what drives you use. Have not had a single failure with shucked drives (8 shucked and 8 reds), but then I also swap them out after 24 months. Plus I did not break any clips opening all 8 of the external cases.

        • Nothing wrong with these drives but they are not designed to run in a constant 24/7 month to month environment. If your data is any important, you would use the best.
Then again, for other personal use, its fine.

          @mcp2kpro:

I run a 16-drive RAID 10 with 2 offsite backups. If you have proper backups it doesn't really matter what drives you use. I also find that if they don't die in the first few months, chances are they will continue running.

    • Would like to know too
(Also if anyone knows what RPM the drive is)

    • If you're doing once or twice a week backup and/or a movie or 2 a week then there's nothing wrong with gutting and placing in a NAS (apart from warranty hassle).

I've got a couple old 3TB WD Greens in a Synology 2 bay been doing this scenario perfectly well for nigh on 4 years now.

It's a consumer desktop drive and therefore designed to handle some daily access but I'd spend the extra on NAS drive if hammered every day serving files to numerous users.

    • +3

I've done this for many DIY NAS boxes both for myself and for family, friends & neighbours. They work perfectly, just be aware that claiming warranty may be difficult but if buying multiples at a good enough price you can usually save enough to simply go buy a replacement drive if anything goes wrong and still be in front!

      • Agreed its the new oem. I don't know how not to buy drives but tear apart 3.5 extensions… Really when a drive fails a year down the track it's more the stress about the data that was on there, and really once they fail you're due for a size upgrade anyway.

I haven't had a drive fail in the last 10 years or so so must be a bit risk happy.

    • Yes i'm using 7 of them now in a QNAP fine

  • That description is trying too hard….

    • The "only two cords" part had me sold. Most drives on the market comes with much more than that.

  • Thanks winter 15 worked. Will harvest the drive from the enclosure for my PC.

  • Would this be good for my son's PS4? Recently read that the PS4 had an update which helps make use of external HDD's.
The kid has no room and has deleted everything he can, so I might look at something like this for his birthday.

    Thanks everyone.

  • Would this work on Mac?
    Would it require reformatting?

    • +1

I daresay it'd be FAT32 out of the box, maybe exFAT, in which case it would work without reformatting. But there's always the chance it'd be NTFS and you'll have to reformat. It's like a two minute process though.

      • Thanks, thought that might be the case.
        My hesitation cost me though!

      • Yeah it's NTFS out of the box.

  • Keep on getting this….

  • Went to officeworks and they price matched $144 and then beat it by 5%.

Very happy since I missed out on the stock front TGG.

  • Shame I missed this, 4TB hdd finally creeping towards the price they should be at. All these other deals lately are higher than the price I bought mine in 2014.

  • Drive inside mine was ST4000DM000
5900rpm. Runs alot cooler than my other 7200 drives which can't be a bad thing.
