I haven't used these but a cheaper option to buying the C & D rechargeable batteries would be the AA adapters on Aliexpress for less than $1.00.

  • Does it break-in new batteries?

    • +13

If by "break in" you mean a different type of charge cycle, the answer is no. There are no settings that can be adjusted, just stick in a battery and it will charge it.

This charger will charge dead-flat batteries. It does a low-current charge until the battery voltage reaches a certain level, then it applies full charge current. I just tested this feature on my unit, using a house key to simulate a shorted battery. I got the "low current" indication for 2-3 seconds, then the flashing red "error" indication, because the voltage didn't rise.

I have several chargers, including a Maha C9000 and a Nitecore D4. I have some really old batteries that only the Aldi charger will charge, the other chargers either refuse outright to charge them, or try to charge them and get confused, cycling on and off.

If you just want a simple charger, I think the Aldi charger is the best one available. I do like the capacity indication of my other chargers though, and the discharge function of the Maha is good for testing batteries and for "refreshing" batteries. The Aldi charger has a display, but is doesn't show capacity, it only shows an estimate of "percent charged".

    Great charger. Worth it

    • Thanks, changed the link to this one.

  • I bought a very similar charger from Aldi recently for $15. It has all of the same features. No complaints so far.

    • how long does it take to charge? (e.g. some 2000mAh AA).

  • Are the Aldi rechargeable batteries any good?

    • +2

They have been fine for me and they are only $5.99, so it's a no brainer.

    • +2

As WatchNerd said, fine for me too. I've got a stack of the AA's still going strong. Probably 6+ years on some of them. Most, if not all have been of the LSD type. I use some Eneloops as well and there have not been any obvious differences in the amount of charge that should be held etc. Haven't had a single one die on me yet unlike a range of other mid-low range brands.

    • Cheers guys

  • Cosmetically this looks new but I'm assuming that the internals are the same as previous versions. Great charger that charges and monitors each battery individually which was my main reason for buying it. It is perfect when you have devices that use an odd number of batteries (my headtorch uses 3 AAs for example). The USB outlet also seems to charge my phone about as quickly as the fast charger that came with the phone.

  • What is the charge rate for AA and AAA batteries on this?

    • I have the charger Aldi were selling two years ago, same features, slightly different case.

The sticker on the back says 500mA for AAA, and 1000mA for AA. This year's model is probably the same.

  • You can recharge this

  • Does it work with eneloopies

  • +1

I'd probably shell out a little more for a Nitecore D4 or similar imo, unless you can find that cheaper $15 price mentioned.

    • +1

I agree. I have several smart chargers, and my favourite is the Liitokala Li-500.

    • I have a Nitecore i4 as well as this and tend to use this more than the Nitecore . But the Nitecore also charges 18650 batteries whicjh is very handy

  • Much prefer the nitecore over this. Think it may still be on sale at zapals…

What's the best place to get the eneloop batteries from ???

    • +1

Since Dick Smith closed, hardly any bargains available for eneloops. If you want to buy at least two packs, probably Amazon US is cheapest.

If you're near Ikea, a lot of people suspect their "LADDA" 2450mAh NiMh batteries are re-badged eneloops. Be aware they sell AA batteries in 2450mAh and 1000mAh, don't mistakenly grab the wrong one.

Also, if you're not picky, the "ready to use" batteries from Aldi ($5.99 for a pack of 4, AA and AAA available) are reasonable. Also Hobbyking's "Turnigy" batteries are a little cheaper, but you'll have to pay shipping, so the overall cost may not be cheaper than Aldi, depending on how many you buy.

  • Can I use these on eneloops

    • U should know

  • Will this charge 18650's?

    • No. NiMh and NiCad only.

If you want to charge 18650s and Eneloops, I can recommend the Nitecore D4. If you only want to charge 18650s, there are plenty of cheap chargers on Ebay, that are powered by USB (use either a PC or a phone charger that you already have).

  • Perfect. Just reminded me i need more AAA lsd.

  • How does this compare with the la crosse bc700? It seems to have more features but not sure about quality.

    • The BC700 is far more capable, but more than twice the price. Can do battery discharge, and will tell you the battery capacity, but can only charge four batteries at the same time (the Aldi charger can do six).

The Aldi charger can also charge C, D and 9V batteries.

If you're considering the BC700, also look at the Liitokala lii500 charger. Is looks to be quite similar to the BC700, but can charge at 1000mA, and cheaper: http://www.gearbest.com/chargers/pp_323039.html

      • Thanks for the info. I already have a bc700 and I really like the battery % charged along with 8 battery slots. Wondering if I should just sell the bc700 & get this instead (while keeping the extra cash).

        • +1

Get the Aldi one, and keep the BC700. If you get rid of the BC700, you'll be wishing you had a way to measure the battery capacity, to tell if a battery is failing.

As you'd be selling the BC700 second-hand, doubtful you would got more than $20 for it anyway. Just checked Amazon, can be had new for ~AU$47.60 if you use a referral link.
