    Owly crud that is cheap!!!

It's about time a high end Android phone has dropped down to $29 cap.

I hope Virgin and Vodafone will follow suit.

  • crazy optus.

  • Well this is expected. This phone use only Android 1.6 and with this price drop, i wont be thinking of upgrading to 2.2. if i buy this, i will root this up and get some cyanogen 2.2

    • ?? the phone looks pretty nice to me for 29 bux =S

    • It is supposed to be going up to 2.1 this quarter

      • This month as far as I believe.

    • Bootloader is not hacked yet.
You can root, but not install custom OSs.
they should have it sorted this month tho, almost at the same time of the official 2.1 release.

    • No Flash either.

  • Thx for sharing!

    • That's a different phone. Optus = Xperia X10, Voda = Xperia X10 Mini Pro

      • I like the mini pro more but i really do like the timescape on this phone. it'll only get better once it hits a new os than the current one.

  • wow, any port in credit? :)

    • Co-ask

  • Good deal, very competitive.

  • What's the early termination fee?

  • I should have waited for this phone. I just get an X10 mini pro. Damn Optus, why do you make such a good deal?

  • 1Ghz android phone on the $29 cap. Good deal.

time to upgr my prepaid phone!!!

  • For those interested regd upgrade to android 2.1

    http://blogs.sonyericsson.com/products/2010/05/05/sony-erics…

    • Does each carrier need to also customize the already heavily custimized SE skin before rolling out the over the Air 2.1 update? If so, it could be a while before we actually get the update, just like owners of Telstra HTC desires who are still stuck with Eclair.

      • I bought a Telstra HTC Desire as an easily root accessible phone, so I could upgrade to 2.2 (and likely 3.x) whenever I wanted.

I've been happily using Froyo for over a month now.

    • Sigh, that is not the same model as pointed out above

    • It wasn't deleted, but I will copy/paste my answer again.

      That’s a different phone. Optus = Xperia X10, Voda = Xperia X10 Mini Pro

ohhh now I get it, that is good

  • This is a very big phone. For some reason it's only got a 65K colour screen, which is pretty dated.

    It's got good specs otherwise.

true, though not a deal breaker. macbook pros had 6bit panels for a long time too. nobody even realised it till the secret got out.

  • Is the handset locked?

    • According to Optus - "No they're not except for the iphones."

      • iphone - locked for 24m? how $ to unlock it before contract finish? thanks,

  • Reviews and user feedback here if needed… http://www.cnet.com.au/sony-ericsson-xperia-x10-339299360.ht…

I'm looking for one of these do it all phones but may pass on this one.

    • Android 2.1 would make the phone perform better, and the battery last longer.

  • I heard that there is a restart problem with this phone, has it been resolved?

  • +2

I work in an official Mobile Phone repair shop that deals with all warranty and non-warranty returns for SE among other manufacturers - and we haven't got many back at all. Only one with the restart problem but many with shattered front screens…..

It's a very good deal! Btw, the 2 months free access fee is valid till 30th Nov 2010 so there is still plenty of time left. Does anyone know when is the $29 and $0 upfront going to expire?

    • I think the ofer dies if/when supply of handsets is exhausted, which may preceed 30th Nov 2010.

      • ta

  • It's cheaper to get the phone from optus and pay the $490 cancellation fee than to buy it outright on ebay! See: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Sony-Ericsson-Xperia-X10-Mobile-Phone…

  • can you keep your older number?

    EDIT: nvm

    • Yeah, there's an option to port in your existing mobile number when you sign up online, I assume you can do the same thing if you sign-up instore.

      • ""I assume you can do the same thing if you sign-up instore""

        Yes you can.

I think you'll find the rates for:

    1. fetching your voiceMails and/or
    2. talk-time, as well as (maybe)
    3. an unspecified fee to unlock it, for use on other vendors' network(s).

combine to make this deal a bit of a stinker.

(For =much= better rates - albeit sans phone - look at Virgin's $25, 45-day online-only "BeanCounter" PrePaid prices.)

Of course, if you don't let folks leave VoiceMails and
you don't ring others that much,
this might be good a way to get a S-E Android-based phone at a lower cost than a new one (or even the upgraded one(s), that are on the way from S-E.).

    You can decide…

    • why r u putting -ve feedbacks, its a good price for this hand set.. my brother has it, its a very good 4" screen handset with a good 8MP camera. at this price point its quite cheap. the other service providers also charges for voice mail retrievals.

    • I don't think the -ve is necessary.

First off, simply because the deal does not suit your needs does not mean it is a bad deal. I don't want to go out buying lycra body suits but I wont -ve the deal that came up recently. If you want better/more cap inclusions, simply choose a different plan.

Taking into account comparable plans on other networks which include the X10 for free, I think this is a very good deal.

And anyway, if you want a plan with much better rates and cap inclusions I would go with TPG/liveconnected

    • IVI >> ""3.an unspecified fee to unlock it, for use on other vendors’ network(s).""

I am under the impression that all Optus contract phones are unlocked or have free unlock anyway?
Someone please correct me if i'm wrong?

      • Called Optus about unlocked code, was told that contract mobile may be unlocked already, and suggested to try simcard from another carrier and call back if the phone is locked. Anyone has tried that?

  • Great deal on getting a cheap android phone as stated by others, hopefully they end up rolling out 2.1 soon - The Timescape interface looks pretty laggy.

  • This is damn cheap but seriously tho, using this phone today for about 1 hr (playing around) the desire is so much better. If you are lucky, you can get 300 welcome credit which brings it to 36.5/month. Get more calls/mb and better network. But it is 10 a month more than this plan.

  • anyone know if they will ever raise the price back to other providers and if so when?? i wanna get it on 3G/vodafone for the same price but dunno if/when they'll match it

  • Got cold called by Optus yesterday. They offered the X10 now w/ 3 months free on the $29 plan. I had no need. I'll stick to TPG's $1 plan. Suits me well.

  • After much looking around for one of these new "super phones" I decided to take this deal and signed up tonight.
    $29 for a X10 is a steal.
    My reason..
Around my area Optus/Virgin is heaps faster b/band than Voda/3.
We have 2 Sony mobiles already and mine has withstood some very rough treatment over the years and is stll 100%. While SSung/Nokia and some other makes may have a few different features I chose a bit of product quality over the extra features (just my just my opinion). The X10 does seem to be well made.
It would have been a better deal with Virgin as they give more data and less call value in their plan but they are more expensive with a $0 plan for a Sony X10.
No matter which phone you go for it will be superceeded by a new model next week/month, guaranteed :-(. The market is hot for this product at the moment and they are pulling out all stops to compete for the business.

(Scheps).. That $10 / month extra adds up to $240 over 2 years, so not such a small difference when you look at it that way.

  • This was advertised in SMH today with an expiry date of 30th September 2010.

  • Deal expired now - gone back up to $29 plan, plus $21 per month handset repayment. Glad I ordered mine 2 days ago - received yesterday… nice phone, at a bargain price :)

    Min cost gone from $696 to $1142 - was a bargain, was… :)

  • Good deal…Hope Virgin jump on board soon!
