          @dbun1:
You realise that this is the era of "nerds and geeks" right?
Everyone is a nerd and geek, it's the thing to be ;)

        • @dbun1: Did you watch the video? The testing, while rudimentary of sorts, is real life usage, not bench-marking.

So because the next iPhone isn't 100% manufacturered by Apple, it's not worth getting? I guess Samsung should start building their own OS, rather than dumping garbage into Google's one. Google should start building their own processors, not buying from Qualcomm. Of course, this is stupid, much like point 1 of your comment. FWIW: Samsung's phone division != Samsung's screen division.

At least current and new iPhone models will get the new iOS release on day zero, more than can be said about virtually (literally?) all non-Google Android devices.

I was keen on the S8 but reviews seem very subjective. The above is an example of a view where practicality was preferable to bells and whistles.

What kills it for me is the less than reliable unlock options. I just wanna push a button when my phone is lying down on a desk and not have to rely on picking it up to access the fingerprint scanner. If the new iphone places the scanner on the back then I won't be interested either.

  • +1

Just get an S8, its newer, better specs, CHEAPER.

  • Has anyone seen this price at costco Sydney if they do stock it

    • Costco has nationwide pricing, so I'm willing to bet it is the same price there too.

    • +1

$10 more in Auburn store. Unsure about stock

  • Looks like all states.

  • If I use the phone before flying out, will there be any issue in TRS? I read this somewhere in Forum

    • +1

      From the TRS site:

"Do my goods need to be in the original packaging?

You can remove your goods from the packaging and use the goods before you depart. You can choose to leave the container/packaging behind as long as the officer can verify the goods to the corresponding tax invoice when the TRS claim is processed."

If people are so into photography that they need a 1000 dollar phone, surely they could invest in a nice mirrorless, will last you years.

    • +3

You missed the point, people pay $1000 so they can post VGA resolution colour washed photos of their food.

      • +2

Or enjoy a live concert from behind a 5" screen

        • so much better than the real thing

  • +3

Call me a tight wad. But 1500 for a phone that lasts two years is insane.

You could buy a crappy car for that price.

I try and keep my phone purchases under 500 and then look for the best prepaid plan to save dollars eg lebara, kogan

Then I take it overseas to claim gst back

    • Right, another factor in Melbourne these days in muggings. They just take the iPhone as "standard" easy $. Its a lot in you pocket to lose however you do it.

      • iPhone theft is practically pointless. Anyone who has FindMyiPhone enabled, which is all but the privacy-paranoid has their device tied to their password. If you steal a device and restore it, you need their Apple ID to get access to the device. Apple will refuse to unlock it.

Most people know not to blindly buy iPhones these days, so selling iCloud locked devices isn't easy. They can only be used for spare parts, which net far less than $1K, given the logic board is worthless in a state where it cannot be activated.

        • Not sure if the Apex gang know that…or if they can even read
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RuMv9EW8LY&t=3s (near monash)

        • Apple is not the only party that can unlock a device as how Sony isn't the only party that knows how to hack PS3's to enable pirated games.

        • +1

@customundo: activation of iOS devices requires authorisation from iCloud servers. Pretty sure your average idiot doesn't have the capability to hack a server, to unlock a stolen iPhone, which will probably be IMEI blacklisted too. Sure, there's a service that does unlock, but it clearly states that if the account has the device marked as lost/stolen or there is a contact message, you'll be reported, the device won't be unlocked and you'll lose the $240 USD you paid to buy the service.

Server side protections aren't easy to bypass, if the company knows what they're doing and sometimes even if they have a complex infrastructure. Not to mention, the bug bounty would push most to report the exploit, due to a high payout in a short time, with no risks.

        • +1

@King Tightarse: wouldn't be surprised if they're literally too stupid to read. You're probably right, maybe Apple should put an instructional video on the activation lock screen.

what I do is wait until the model (android) is about to be superseded, and look for hte best bargain, and then price match and/or use discount cards to buy it outright,

        Usually $500 is possible,
or I go for the chinese brands which are $250

    • +1

Phones last longer than two years - it's just that we the consumers have gotten into a habit of changing phones every 1-2 years because that's the duration of phone plans these days.

I do agree though that phones are reaching price points that are very expensive.

      • Partly inflation, partly exchange rate, and partly manufacturers (Apple, Samsung, even Google) packing higher quality components in.

  • +3

(but totally worth it)???? sorry, not really…….

  • "Totally worth it" ..Ozbargainers say nah…

  • -2

The max I would pay for this phone is probably $379. Anything above $400 is too much for something that has an LCD screen. Plus the whole Apple ecosystem constrains you.

    • $1000+ phone
    • Bargain

    Pick one

  • the warranty itself is worth the price.

    • any difference??

Can somebody post Sony/Samsung tv deals in Costco Brisbane please? I live bit far from Brisbane so cannot come down frequently.. Help us buddies

    • +1

If you're on facebook, there's a group that will post some info, if you request it (if they are around that area)

  • Slightly off topic, but I had trouble with my old iphone 5S (expired warranty) whilst in Bangkok. I went to their service centre and they spent a lot of time with me and on the phone. Fixed - NO CHARGE! I thought "Great PR".
What are their service centres like here in Aust? Especially for expired warranty items. Thanks.

  • Just FYI for anyone who reads this… JB Hi-Fi also appears to be clearing out some of the 256gb iPhone 7 models (could be telstra unlocked models only - but they can sell them outright). I think they are around this price.

I recently saved a $1000 on a new Iphone - I was going to buy an Iphone 6 but just could not hand over a $1000+ in cash for a phone. I went on line and found an online store with brand new Iphone 4g 64gb for $200. the 6 did not have a $1000 worth of extra features

  • Anyone know any aussie retail stores still selling - iPhone 6S ?

  • New model may get announced as early as tonight

    • Starts 3 AM AEST?
