  • Which iPhone? Model number in title :)

    • +1

      7

        • +5

Doesn't it say in the pic? Or did that not come up in time?

        • -7

@kiriakoz: it's meant to say in the title

        • +3

@justcallmeboss: I know, but if you wanted the deal, you can see it in the photograph. The posted obviously forgot to post the model number so in the meantime, one can check the photo.

        • -7

@kiriakoz: if you know, then why are you asking?

The purpose of my comment was to remind the poster, and to make the ozbargain experience more positive for other users. One should not have to click on the photo to know what the deal is.

Please read the deal posting guidelines if you are unclear of the rules.

        • @justcallmeboss: He didn't ask if it's meant to say it in the title.

        • -4

@Nonverbose: quite obviously implied as per the chain of comments above.

        • +1

@justcallmeboss: True, but the thumnbail is pretty clear; no need to click on it…

  • +6

Not a bad deal if flying soon and can claim GST

    • +1

Will Costco will put your name, address and other details on the receipt required for items over $1000?

      • -1

It's a legal requirement that they have to if asked.

      • you ask and they will put it in for you.

      • +1

It should already have the membership holder's name on the bottom. For my Costco receipt >$1000, it automatically added my address. Alternatively you can technically just write it on yourself, I've done this before and there were no issues with TRS

    • For things over $900 dont you legally have to pay the gst anyway when you bring it back into Australia?

      • +16

        Lol

      • Or get an abn and register for gst.

      • Yes, but if you declare they will calculate a new amount based on depreciation. So it will be less than the full amount of GST originally due.

        • Not entirely true. I was told this same info by the departing TRS officer, and on arriving back in to Sydney, the customs officer stated it is ONLY for goods not returning back into the country. So the risk is not to declare, and keep you TRS, and hope you don't get busted, or get busted and have to pay double the amount of GST claimed… I was super bummed. Lost my TRS…. The info on the TRS scheme website is being updated :(

        • @51kabunka:

          I probably worded it improperly.

I travelled, got my GST back and three weeks later I declared that I was returning with the items. They have a folder with the schedules for depreciation depending on length of time out of the country. Since I declared, and said that hardly anybody does (even though they do catch a few not declaring), she would depreciate it at the max amount, meaning I paid the smallest possible.

Usually, when they catch you, they won't depreciate it.

You can risk it and not declare, but since the systems are now electronic it's pretty easy for the TRS teams and border control teams to talk to each other.

      • +3

It's a gift for your aunty. You're not bringing it back.

        • +1

And the iphone 7 in ur pocket on ur way back is the gift from ur uncle?

        • +12

@westernculture: no, you're just happy to see me.

        • +2

^^ this 100%. I was wearing a watch last year which was also a gift for my friend overseas! I wanted to try it out for him before gifting it to him of course..

      • +2

I gifted it to my aunt for her bday and she regifted it back to me as a gesture of thanks. that's our family tradition - problem?

        • Its just a joke, for the customs.

        • Custom's don't care if it's a gift/present/thanks/sample. It's coming in and it has a value.

        • I hope that no-one follows this advice for evading duty. Every man and his 'duty free dog' are a wake up to these types of very amateurish scams and you run the risk of seizure and forfeiture.

      • No as its now USED when you come back into Australia and has a lower value. Its only NEW and SEALED on the way out (when you claim back the TRS/GST) and it wasnt bought overseas, it has no GST on coming back into OZ.

The ONLY things I know are limited, that you have to declare is cash over AU$10,000 and items your going to claim the free level on like ciggies and plonk

        • That's not how it works.

If you take something out of the country and claim the GST back using TRS, when you re-enter the country the value of it is counted against your $900 tax-free threshold.

So if you fly out with a $1100 phone and get $100 back, if you re-enter with that same phone, you may have to re-)pay a certain portion of the GST claimed, based on whatever depreciation schedule they use (assuming you declare it - if you don't declare it and get sprung, you'll likely be hit with the full GST and possibly a fine).

  • +4

Isn't a new model coming out soon?

    • +16

And soon again after that :)
OMG can normal middle class people afford to pay $1170 - $1400 for a mobile phone?? Has this world gone mad?

        • +22

Unlike super funds where past history is not an indication of future performance, we can be 100 percent certain that it will be more expensive, as seen in the past 9 years of prices rises!

        • -5

          @djones145:

we can be 100 percent certain that it will be more expensive

they don't always increase the price.

        • +20

          @jv:
Stop trolling. You know what peck means

        • If for no other reason than the AUD is heading downwards.

        • +2

@djones145:contrary to popular belief the cost of the iPhone hasn't changed since they started offering them contract free 7 years ago. They've been 649USD year after year. What changes is the Australian dollar.

        • -1

          @tp0:

the iPhone hasn't changed since they started offering them contract free 7 years ago.

a difficult concept for some people here to comprehend apparently…

      • It certainly has. And not only in this aspect…

      • +12

Times are tough im barely making ends meet *buys $1000 phone

      • +4

Over a year, how much do people spend on coffee? On petrol? On lunches? On Foxtel? On the plan for any phone? On a car? On mag wheels for a car?

$1000 for something you can use for two years, then sell for $500-600, and that in the meantime will be a camera, a GPS, an alarm, a reminder service, a music player, a movie viewer, a games device, etc. is really an incredible deal.

Of course, you can do all this somewhat cheaper if you don't want or need all those nice things (I have an old Moto G and a $10 month plan) but for those who want and like them, it's really not that much compared to life's other expenses.

      • I mean I use my phone a couple of hours ever day, for at least a year (if not more) before I upgrade. That's easily worth $1500 to me.

      • +1

Meh, the same phone on Optus is $109 a month for 10GB. I'm on a $40 plan with 12GB (and 25% discount, so $30), bought my iPhone outright, been worth it.

        $109 * 24 = $2616 over 2 years. (Optus $109 monthly, 256GB, 10GB data and unlimited calls/SMS)
        $30 * 24 + $1399 = $2119 over 2 years. (No discount)
        $30 * 24 + $1170 = $1890 over 2 years. (Discounted)

Not really a bad price, for those who spend 8 hours a day glued to their phones.

You can actually stand to update every year, selling the old phone, as they don't lose a lot of value in 12 months, and you still come out on top, compared to buying from a provider.

      • +3

sure …. don't eat avo on sourdough that or try and save for a home.

yeah ….. with flat wages growth i've become an android fan for the last few years.

it's a lot of money for something if dropped gets a cracked screen.

      • And they whinge about housing affordability.

        • +1
Younger generations now only want the finer things in life.

    • half a year away.

    • Sept probably, but if stocks tight many may struggle to get one until around Oct.

Pretty strong rumours that it'll cost more too, certainly doubt it'll be cheaper unless the AUD makes a move against the USD to help local prices.

  • Price beat/match at OW or JB. At JB, stack more with discounted gift cards!

    • +11

Nobody price matches Costco due to membership requirement.

      • -4

can always give it a try. YOu'd be surprised there are staff working at OW/JB that don't know these things!

        • +1

staff working at OW/JB that don't know these things!

they aren't allowed to price match something this expensive without a manager's approval.

        • @jv:
What if a manager doesn't know these things?

        • +2

          @jas0nt:

They will, they are responsible for store profits.

        • -3

@jas0nt: or they just don't care as they still make money even with the price match anyway.

        • @tajid:

they still make money even with the price match anyway.

how much do they make on Apple products?

        • @jv: I had OW price beat the JB sale on this phone, bringing it down to $1120, no managers approval necessary. Was done and dusted in minutes, phone in hand the next day.

        • +3

          @nelga:

Shopping at JB doesn't require membership fees.

        • @jv: Probably a response to:

they aren't allowed to price match something this expensive without a manager's approval.

        • @TheOneWhoKnocks:

          Probably a response to

          it's true…

        • @jv: ?

        • +1

@nelga: it's possible they'd already done the same match for another customer and the manager had ok'd it?

That or they just went ahead and skipped asking.

        • +1

they even. check model numbers on sd cards now for price matches in case grey import.

        • +1

@Smigit: I had previously purchased a macbook the same way and that definitely needed the manager approval period, however this was different. She put me on hold, checked the JB website, came back and said no worries you'll have it in the morning. Only had to add postage unless I wanted to pick up.

      • -2

Well, at least show your valid Costco membership card and that will probably give you more reasons not to price match?

        • +3

I doubt the issue is membership verification but the fact Costco makes money from the membership and it therefor pads out the prices.

    • +1

Costco is more a wholesaler than a retailer. So no you won't be able to price match dur

  • Someone I work with bought a phone from Costco and dropped it which cracked the screen and apparently Costco replaced it?
Is their warranty that good for members or is someone telling me porkies?

    • +5

      Porkies

    • I think some screen protectors have a screen warranty whereby if you drop the phone and the screen breaks, they'll replace it… so maybe that?

      Otherwise, porkies.

    • +2

Costco warranty is really good, but I don't think they cover Apple products in the same way. Seeing as Apple stopped supplying Costco due to people exploiting Costco's return policy. Costco sends defective goods to the manufacturer, at the manufacturer's cost. Costco will cover other things and are pretty nice. Occasionally you'll get a 'company hero' who wants to refuse help/support.

Although, Costco's policy is to refund you back, they don't exchange or replace. They only refund, you have to get the replacement item on your own accord (if it is available) and subject to the new price, whether it is higher or lower.

  • Paying $1000 for a phone is totally not worth it.

    • +2

Sure, feel free to buy 5 android phones for the same price.

But fact is as long as people find value in it and are willing to be customers, Apple can charge them what they like.

Personally my mobile is a big part of my life and don't mind dropping good money for reliability and quality. (Also FaceTime).

      • You might be surprised with the quality and reliability of a $300 Android such as the Oppo F1s or Moto G5+

    • +5

My galaxy S8+ begs to differ

      • My Lumia 950 XL also begs to differ

        (ducks and hide)

  • +16

8 month old phone is not worth buying now at a saving of only 16-17% off RRP. Max of 4 months to go before the new model is announced. If it had only been released less than 3 months then yea sure maybe..

    • +3

Yeah I agree, especially with all the leaks pointing to the iPhone 8 being a MASSIVE upgrade from the previous models.

They have used essentially the same design for the last 3 releases, something only apple could get away with and still keep customers.

    • new models apple don't have " compelling " extra processing or features and apple supports ios for many years so you buy one when you need unlike androids ….. i need a new android every 2-3 years as manufacturers don't support old models for new android release for more than 3 year old model.

  • +2

can confirm applies @ dockland, VIC. was there yesterday

  • +2

Or you can get it from JB Hi Fi $1179, this deal is still going on:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/307980
I bought a Gold one yesterday.

    • -2

Are you serious? Bought an iphone released last Sep now at 1179$???

you could have bought S8 for far less $$$ than that.
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/310887

      • Looks like he wanted a premium phone with premium specifications.

        • +6

Instead all he got was a premium price tag.

    • +1

Or get HN to price match JB an then use Amex if you have it, got mine for $1029

  • Who replaced Steve Jobs? Have they changed the iPhone much with the new one?

  • +1

Better get S8 or wait for the new iphone release in Sep/Oct.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/310887

    S8 is far better as:

    • The next iphone will be using the display from Samsung. Apple has placed an order for around 70Mil OLED displays from Samsung.
    • The next ios release will be borrowing features from Android (hell yeah Android is light years ahead with Android O touted to take machine learning to the next level)

Nothing against Apple. But we have to be reasonable and open in criticizing a product if you want that product to improve.
Otherwise, you could end up with the same phone being released with a different name and still people fighting and falsely claiming it's superiority.

Simply put: lower expectation yields inferior product.

    • -7

These are a few reasons why I use iPhone (6S+) and not one from Samedung:

      1) 1 tap on the status bar at the top is all it takes to scroll to top in the browser (Safari).

      2) FaceTime.

      3) iMessages. I like how I can receive and send SMS from my Mac.

      4) Does not explode.

      5) Don't have to manually manage memory by quitting unused apps. Doesn't become slow.

I am sure there are alternatives/workarounds in Android. But they are not for me.

    • -1

Far better? How does the iPhone 6S outperform the Samsung S8?? Galaxy S8 vs iPhone 6s Speed test

      • +1

        @sridhar
        "Samdung" really?

        • +1

          iPhone 9

      • +1

Benchmarks are merely an indicator of raw power. You would expect the S8 to be faster than the 6S given how new the S8 is, so I don't know why one would waste time benchmarking them against each other anyway.

Post above is talking about real world usage factors that the majority of people look at when buying a phone. Only nerds look at benchmarks.

        • +1

Riiiight, benchmarks IE standardized controlled bench testing "doesn't matter" now…
Apple fanpeople are getting a little shrill and desperate these days considering just how clunky, under-speccced and outdated the iPhone has become

        • @King Tightarse:

          I don't use an iPhone.

What I'm saying is that the average consumer, which is the majority of users, don't give a toss about benchmarks, they look at real world usage factors such as ease of use, apps etc.

What use is knowing the S8 is faster and benchmarks higher if it can't do iMessage? If a user wants iMessage, then getting a phone with iMessage is far more useful than knowing where the phone sits on the benchmark ladder.

Only the nerds and geeks get off on knowing their handset is king of the benchmark test - everyone else doesn't care.
