  • Seems like a good deal. I haven't had much of a browse for long expiry data packs. My new laptop has a 4g modem and was thinking of getting something like this to pop in for times when I have no wifi, which is not too often. Are there any similar plans? I just moved to Kogan on my phone and am severely disappointed in Vodafone's network in comparison to Optus around my area (Melb CBD/Parkville/Carlton)

    • +4

Optus has a 365 day expiry, 25GB for $130 offer that lets you roll over unused data. Optus's Prepaid Daily Maximiser deal has also been mentioned as a possible solution for people in your situation…$10 recharges to keep the sim active (need to recharge 120 days from your credit expiry) and $2 for 1Gb/day on the days that you need it. Better double check yourself though.

      • thanks! =)

      • used to be 2 year expiry.

      • These Voda deals come and go. Optus's $130 can buy you 2.5 years worth with $5 left over

  • What is the recommend setting if you put it in a laptop or iPad Pro?

    Auto updates for windows/apps?

    • Not sure. I've been using it in my phone and didn't need any special setup.

    • Up to you, just set to check for downloads but not update automatically then just get the criticals until you're on wifi?

Anyone knows how long this can be kept without activating, before it no longer activates at all?

    • +1

      Forever

    • I'd be interested in this, too. Can anybody confirm the 3 years?

    • last time i talked to Vodafone online support and was told there is no expiration date.

    • +2

Prepaid sims have a 3 year expiry from manufacture.

  • Can i put this into a phone (dual sim) and use the data?

      • +1

Aaaaw, thought so :(, thanks for the reply, have a great weekend !

      • +3

Is there an explanation why it wouldn't work? does a phone and a tablet treat sim cards differently?

        • I can put my Telstra data card into the phone and even receive SMS. However with dual sim phones, I dunno what the speeds will be like. The second SIM normally only supports 2G/3G on the second slot. However I am guessing you can put it into the primary slot, if your main SIM doesn't have a data plan.

    • +4

Not sure why Orpheus said no. I've got this sim from the last offer and this is exactly how I'm using it…data only in my dual-sim phone.

      • Can you receive calls and text?

        • +4

          Yes.
Also Orpheus is full of it.

I'm using an S5 Duos, with two slots, hence Duos.
I can switch between which SIM the phone draws data from, and can pick which SIM to send texts/calls from.

I use the 2nd/data sim to put into websites and such that require a phone number so all the dumb spam goes to it as well as all the dodgy phone calls. I never expect to receive important phone calls from that SIM anyway.
Like for example I use it as a point of contact on Gumtree so my real number doesn't get spread around.

        • +1

I use it for data in a dual SIM phone. I've tried calling the number and texting it but it's blocked.

        • @greenpossum: so u cannot receive calls? the above comment says u can, confused :(

        • @hopper: Well I tried but no success. Not just with my SIM but with another a friend gave me with a few days to go. Maybe the others were lucky. Vodafone is under no obligation to provide any voice service. What's confusing is that according to VF the plan is supposed to come with 30 free texts, and I don't see how that could work. I can't even text 1511 to see my usage, I have to use the web page or the app.

        • @greenpossum: thx, now i'm in dilemma :| , want a sim for my watch so i can leave phone temporarily when i go to gym or any other places.

        • +1

@hopper: 10GB data is really overkill for a watch. If you want to receive texts (can you receive calls on a watch?) maybe get one of those long expiry as you go plans with Aldimobile or Amaysim. E.g. a $5 starter kit from Aldi will set you up for a year.

        • The vodafone MBB SIM I bought about 15 months ago lets me receive calls and texts. Can also send texts if you select the right recharge.

        • @Boshait: cool. thx for the update, will give a try

    • You should be ok as most if not all dual SIM phones allow you to select which SIM it draws data from, while the other one is strictly for calls and SMS.

  • Does this have a public ip. Wondering if it will work with a cctv system

    • +5

I have a Voda data sim and it gets a dynamic IP in the RFC 1918 range (10.21.66.xx) and is NATd to the Internet with an address 120.xx.xx.xx.

If the cctv allows dynDNS or something like it, it should work, I think. But not if you have type in the IP directly.

I have long expiry Vodafone pre-paid MBB. It's useless. The two cafes I go to in the middle of my major city don't work. Too congested. And when these deals come along it's even worse for a few months. Avoid, IMO. I just keep mine to use in case my home net goes down.

  • +2

I believe you can activate the SIM as mobile plan as well.
    So..
10GB data only for 180 days
    or 12GB data + unlimited national call / text for 35 days…

    • +1

Not correct. MBB Sims will not give you the option to activate them as a phone sim. They are flagged as mbb and will only give you a mbb option during the activation process.

      • Maybe you could get a mobile SIM instead then? It's also half price and it will give you both options right?

  • How long does the 10 gb lasts?

    • +3

      180 days

      • and if the data ends i can just recharge 1gb $10 and it will still last for the 180 days? and also does it come with a phone number as well?

  • +2

While this is a good deal, it is by no means a once off thing.

Vodafone seem to have this $50 offer and then the $40 offer for half price quite regularly.

I got the $50 offer a couple of months ago when it only came with 8 gigs.

I bought mine for a specific purpose, and only use it in 1 place to access the 'net, and have been overall happy with it on my 3G phone. As I use it to access the 'net from a PC, I'm thinking of getting the $59 4G modem next time.

Don't plan on ever recharging. Just buy a new SIM for 50% off each time.

Sadly, I've not seen the $60 365 day SIM on special.

    • Did it come with a phone number?

      • It did!

I transferred a number to it, but it gave me a temp. number to use while my number was being ported.

Apparantly, you get 30 free SMS's a month, but I'm having trouble using them. I don't know if it's the custom ROM on my phone, or something else.

        • Thats really good to hear! How did you able to transfer a number into it? Is it asked during the whole online ordering process?

        • +2

When activating the card you get the choice of porting or a new number.

After much stuffing around, I discovered you can only use the included SMS messages from a modem, and not a normal phone. Don't know why, but there you have it.

        • @bulletNOVA: It's a standard option during activation. However in my case the number can't receive calls or texts. I can't even check the usage with 1511, I have to use the app or web page. The account details on the website show that phone service is blocked. It's ok by me, I use only data and just wanted to hang onto this number anyway.

        • @photonbuddy:

Because you need to send/receive txt through a website portal after logging in to Vodafone MyAccount which goes through a wifi router. I have used it like that, not sure if there is a way on a phone or 3G/4G able tablet though.

    • +1

The $59 modems are $39 ATM and they come with 5gb starter data. Just FYI.

      • Saw that … bought that!!

At $79, I thought it was too expensive, and was happy to use my phone to tether a PC via wireless hotspot.

At $39, I grabbed one. Hope I can unlock it (if it's locked) but no real loss if I can't.

Wonder how much I can get for the included SIM though …

        • Looks like the modem doesn't do band 28 (700mhz).

        • @StrayfireX:

Correct, Vodafone uses B5/850mHz for their use as low mHz band. If you can get a cheap 4G Optus Huawei modem ( white model ) on sale often below $30 this covers all bands for the three Telcos and used to be unlocked out of the box. Can put a Telsta sim in and works instantly ( using that combo now ), but for Voda have to access settings to change Vodafone APN details.

        • @ozhunter68:

Ah thanks, I mean like I'm a little surprised Voda hasn't decided to sell a b28 modem yet. After all they did just win an auction bid for 5mhz of b28.

      • Does the modem come unlocked? Can I put a non-Vodafone sim in it?
Sorry if it was mentioned earlier, thanks for any reply

  • Thanks for sharing up this good deal. I hope I will enjoy this plan.

  • I wonder if this would work overseas?

  • Hey, guys :)

I have a 4G optus wifi toggle with is unlocked. Can I put this sim card in it and use the data?

    thanks :)

    • yes. change the APN.

  • If you top up before expiry, will it roll over unused data?

  • +1

    Whats the ACTIVATE BEFORE date?

    • Above discussions suggest you have 3 years

  • So can you buy multiples of this and activate months later? or will you get a different offer by then?

  • Thanks OP. Just ordered. Getting it sent to same name & address as last time. Surprised they allow this for starter packs.

  • Expiration of credit is 90 days from purchase.
