Recommendation to get higher capacity surface, or a high capacity SD card (Prob this option, as cheaper). 128Gb doesn't leave you with too much room to play with.

    • And more ram.

      • That too, I forgot that the 128 only came with 4Gb.

      • Honestly, if you are somewhat computer savvy and keep your on top of the background processes and so on 4GB of ram and a 128GB SSD isn't too little. But I would agree more ram and storage would be nice.

        • I've been using 4gb ram on my pro 3 and it's been a boss! I mainly record and edit audio but I've had no issues with 4gb.

      • I've been using a Macbook Air with 4gb/128gb for four years on and off, and I always wish I had sprung for more.

It's now just the laptop I use when I am too lazy or cold to get out of bed and use my desktop and I need to do something my iPad Air cannot.

        When I go Surface or Surface-like, I'm going Thunderbolt 3, 16GB/512GB minimum.

Woh!! What are you doing on there!?

        • @thisispants: Yeah, I've got to agree, anyone requiring 16GB of ram and 512 of SSD storage is not someone who these lower end devices are targeted at.

What's with people expecting to get i7 performance at a pentium price. These devices are really aimed at people who want to watch Netflix and derp around on the internet and 'do' word documents and maybe a small spreadsheet. If you want to edit videos or compile complex code then you will need to reach into your pocket and pay a little bit more, but you'd probably be better off with a small ITX desktop PC or something.

        • @thisispants: Well my laptop is a desktop replacement, i7-4710MQ / 8GB / 768GB SSD. If I get a surface-like, I want it to replace this laptop to be my main PC, with similar specs.

    • actually 128g is enough, i have been using my pro3 for years, still 30g left. bottle neck is 4g ram.

    • I have no problem with my SP4 m3 4GB 128GB, mainly email, browsing, ozbargaining.

If this your only computer at home may be you will have problem with storage.

      • Everything is usage dependent. Obviously with your purpose, the core m3 is sufficient. A $100 tablet would be sufficient too, if you could deal with small lags in everything.

8Gb is a big help for the coding I run on mine, and 256Gb stores my 1080p videos so I dont have to constantly transfer in new stuff.

        • 8Gb is a big help for the coding I run on mine, and 256Gb stores my 1080p videos so I dont have to constantly transfer in new stuff.

I have no problem with youtube 4k video, storage you can always use sdcard.

    • Returned the 4gb model I had for the 8gb.. the difference is very noticeable

  • Anyone that has the Surface Pro 4 4gb version, is it enough?

    • +2

I don't have a surface, but I can pretty confidently say that 4GB is not good enough for a computer these days. I would look for a minimum of 8GB

      • I actually have a desktop PC that I run with 4GB of ram, so long as you keep on top of your background processes 4GB isn't too little. But more is more (better but also more expensive).

        • +1

That is true. But "keeping on top of your background processes" is a big hassle usually. I am a pro and I definitely need more RAM. So my opinion will be a bit biased as well :)

        • @snowcold: I've really got to disagree, the only thing you 'need' to do is just to close/uninstall/not install those background processes. These days many programs have hooks that keep the program or portions of it in system memory so 'it will open fast' just turn off those things as you install those programs.

    • Have an original Surface Pro i5 4GB. It's more than enough for regular tasks and I've been known to use it for Autodesk inventor, matlab, etc. Its not lightning fast but more than enough to get by. Right now it has excel, word, outlook, onenote, firefox(youtube) and foxit reader open and spread across multiple desktops and sits at about 70-80% ram. But more ram is always nice if you can afford it!

    • I have this tablet and it runs Dota ok. 4gb is fine.

      • Really? All on low and what fps?

        • It varies. 720p will get you 50-60fps with no action, in fights it gets lower 20-30. But this is with some detail. I knida get used to it, it's not the same as playing on desktop. It runs at 1080 on lowest settings at about 40fps.

Ok let's this sounds low on paper but alot of desktop PCs drop to this when the action is high, so it might not be as different as you think. The tiny keyboard is another issue.

    • I have a SP4 M3 with 4GB. As a replacement for my Note 10.1 (2014) I couldn't justify paying double the M3 price ($698) just to get a decent amount of ram. I've found it fine. I use Netflix, Photoshop, Leonardo (drawing app), Word, Excel, Evernote, Firefox etc. Not all at once though - I'm very careful to kill other apps to keep it running smoothly.

I haven't wanted for more ram yet. It all depends on what you want to do with it - which you haven't mentioned.

      • You motioned Leonardo and that is something I'm quite worried about atm and its why an iPad Pro might still be in my scope.

Are you noticing any input lag at all for apps Leonardo and alike?

Reason being, I have two hobbys (drawing and audio production/DJ events) and I kinda wanna get away from my Intuos graphics tab, currently use my laptop for DJ stuff and Intuos for drawing, though selling both of them and just paying the difference would be a huge bonus in my eyes.

Leonardo is an awesome app. I also own fully-licenced versions of Sketchable, Mischief and Photoshop. Leonardo is by far my favourite for sketching on the go.

With regards to lag, there is some noticeable lag. Mischief is by far the worst. The others are all good enough for my use case. Keep in mind that I have a low-powered M3 cpu, and just 4GB of ram.

The newly announced Surface Pro has super pen response. Then again, so does the new iPad Pro 10.5. They both sound like awesome options. For me, I got the whole kit (SP4, keyboard with fingerprint reader and stylus) for under $1k, which is the only reason I even considered it. You'd have to weigh up whether you want to work with Windows or IOS.

I also have a Wacom Cintiq 13HD, and as much as I love the Surface, there's no comparing it to my Cintiq which is hooked up to my beefy desktop PC.

If I just wanted to draw, and was willing to go back to iOS, I'd definitely go for the 10.5 iPad and an Apple Pencil. However, if I could afford a higher grade CPU Surface (I'm sure the 8GB i5 would suffice), I could see it becoming my sole Windows machine, especially when docked with my 27" monitor. Being able to run full Photoshop and scale it up to the bigger screen when at home is pretty sweet.

@t3chshopper: Oh, right, heh.. your last line actually punched into me the real facts, the ones my spontaneous purchasing doesn't want to hear..

Thanks for all the details, it sounds like I'm just gonna look for a device thats designed to be temporary and do abit of everything and then get the proper stuff done at my workstation with my Wacom's and mixers!

        • @dfaktz: Haha. Yeah, I know what you mean. I spent about a month solely drawing on my Surface. I was pretty impressed. I then jumped back on my Cintiq and it really knocked the Surface down a couple of pegs!

        • @t3chshopper:
Has the hardware in the new SP been improved or is it just in the pen? I was under the impression that the new pen is backwards compatible so you should be able to get tilt, etc. on these tablets if you buy the new pen.

        • +1

@s732: Like the iPad, apparently the new SP screen tech contributes to the speed increase. As you say, the new pen provides tilt to SP4 and SP3, but 4096 levels of pressure and 21ms is only available on the new SP.

        • @t3chshopper:
          Ah makes sense, cheers!

    • I think it completely depends on what your needs are. I have the SP4 m3 with 4GB RAM. It's entirely sufficient for me, which are basic: Office apps/light internet browsing/emails/kid's homework etc…

Only thing I can think of is that sometimes, in Chrome, if I have a few too many tabs open (say 20) it will refresh pages when I return to them. Apart from that, I can't think of anything else it's struggled with.

      • Yeah. I actually have an add-on to suspend unused tabs after a while to save battery and memory.

        • What extension is that, if you don't mind me asking?

        • +2

@timmysbiscuits: Not t3chshopper but The Great Suspender works well for that. I just don't use Chrome anymore though, Opera is pretty good and has the few extensions I need plus a VPN and it's not a memory hog.

        • +1

@ellydoll: Yep, that's the one. How do you find Opera? I used it exclusively probably over 10 years ago until Firefox took off. I was a bit worried about the VPN situation when I found out that they were acquired by a Chinese firm that I don't know anything about.

    • I have one and it's fantastic:)

    • I got the Surface Pro 4 with 4gb/128gb when Kogan/dick smith had sales a couple of months ago. I only use it for office work (lots of spreadsheets) and don't use Chrome and it's completely fine, I don't notice any lag at all. It isn't a gaming laptop.

  • Called my local JB and managed to grab the last one at $997. Worth ringing around to see if they still have stock.
