Just a reminder that you can't add Microsoft Complete if you don't purchase direct from MS.

    • +1

I had to look up what "Microsoft Complete" was.
It is "extended hardware protection and accidental damage coverage for up to two years".
I wonder if this is an additional 2 years (i.e. 3 years total) or just increasing the normal 1 year warranty to 2 year hardware protection and accidental damage coverage"?

  • These are cheapest ever from HN it seems, but the i7's aren't discounted to their regular sale price. zzz

  • +1

new Surface Pro goes on sale on the 16th

    • +1

But will they be available at sale price?

      • +7

Nope, and they're not that different. The biggest improvement is the battery life (which to be fair is a big improvement).

        • The new i5 chip (7300u instead of 6300u in the SP4) has about 15% better performance which is a decent setup up.

        • The new CPU, new pen and up to 1TB storage space are considerable improvements too. I'm tempted to upgrade from my SP3.

        • +2

@CUD: Shame the pen isn't included anymore and is now US$99 extra

        • @SwampCrack: Yup the i5-7300U is looking like a very good selection. Almost the same base and turbo frequency as i7-7500U although it has 3MB instead of 4GB L2 cache on the i7. The integrated graphics is oddly slightly faster than the i7 too.

      • +1

I think the new one will be more expensive than SP4, and no longer includes a pen.

But the i5 version will be fanless.. I think?

        • Is it a real i5 chip or part of the rebranded low powered M chips from last year?
          https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/intel-renames-core-m-core…

        • @Doogan: its real i5-7300u Dual core with hyper threading.

Only cloud is whether it would throttle underload since its fanless now. So wait for reviews on that model. The i7 model is the only one with the fan

        • -1

@KitchenSink: Im glad about that, both my Surface 3 & 4 would become so noisy once the fans kicked in (4 was better obviously). Im currently conflicted whether I should by a Macbook Pro or a new surface. One obviously hurts the kip pocket more than the other. But damn, Macs just hold there value so much better.

        • +2

@Doogan: I dont know. I've been looking at surface pros on ebay and they seem to hold value pretty well. It's not the same level as macs but pretty decent.

  • Should we wait for EOFY?

    • These would almost certainly be discontinued now so once they're gone..

      • +3

Certainly wait few more days to get better discount or deal elsewhere if you don't need it now

      • +1

SP3 was available long after SP4 released. I think they can still be purchased now.

SP4 will just replace SP3 as the budget model, while SP5 takes over from SP4.

    • EOFY is pretty soon. They want them gone before EOFY.

  • +2

Probably not a good time to buy one of these as I expect the Surface 4 Pro will be dramatically discounted when the new model is released sometime this month.

  • Wasnt the i5 base model $698 a month or two ago?

    • +1

You're thinking of the base Core m3 spec which was a non-i5 processor and didn't have the surface pen included :)

      • I wish they have the m3 deal back as I prefer the fanless m3 model anyway.

        • I hardly ever hear the fan on my wife's i5 whenever I use it. I'd jump at the i5 over to m3 unless you wait for the newer models as the i5 is now fanless too.

        • The new i5 model in the Surface Pro (5th Gen) is fanless. Interesting to see if there's any massive throttling

        • I only ever hear the fan on my i5 when firmware updates are installing or if I run a full scan with windows defender.

        • Harvey Norman in store had it at this price a few days ago

        • @willoz: Which Harvey Norman was this?

        • @staceyb:

Sorry I just checked it was $899, in Bondi.

      • I price matched the m3 last time at JB very happy with it.

Just sometime Chrome not responding but I think more a Win10 thing.

  • using the SP4 256gb i5. Love it.

Any discount on top for students?

    • TRS and Amex deal?

Blows my mind people are willing to pay an $300 for an extra 128GB of storage.

    • -1

And an extra 8GB of ram

      • +3

        It's an extra 4GB

        8GB DDR3L RAM 1xSODIMM $73.46
        4GB DDR3L RAM 1xSODIMM $35

        • +1

True 4GB extra not 8GB. But I'm not sure why your mind would be blown people pay extra for more ram/storage? Yes it's cheaper to buy the parts if you can, but it's not an option with the Surface. So you pay extra or you go with a standard laptop…

    • +1

Soldered on ram so there is little choice except to pay more for 4gb

    • Well there's really no way to upgrade the storage and RAM like you can do with bigger laptops by throwing in an SSD or extra SO-DIMM RAM (unless its soldered on like most ultrabooks). It sucks but that's the reality

Yeah you can add micro SD cards but its not as fast and not the same as a proper SSD.

      • I added a 128gb microsd to my m3 version. No issues and no storage issues. Just keep a spare 256gb SSD external should I need it, but I haven't yet.

    • I agree with you. It's cheaper to buy a microSD card.

But if you want an extra 4GB RAM, that's your only choice.

I have the m3 version. Bought it to help study for upcoming exams. Best laptop I've ever used and perfect for what I use it for (word, onenote, web browsing + email). Not sure why an i5 or i7 is preferrable as these are hardly gaming laptops. Extra ram would be useful, but even with chrome, edge, multiple tabs in each, onenote, word, excel and drawboard open, the system doesn't slow down. You can tell windows 10 was built for this type of laptop. At $1k, the i5 is probably worth it given the pen is included. I paid $700 + $80 for the pen + $200 for the keyboard at JB (price matched with various retailers).

    • I have the m3 version. Bought it to help study for upcoming exams. Best laptop I've ever used

The only problem for me is when I sit on sofa I cannot use the laptop lap cushion I used before with my laptop. I have to take it out as tablet.

      • Anything with a kickstand is not stable on the lap. I prefer the Tabpro S keyboard cover. You won't have as many angles you can tilt the screen at, but at least it's useable in your lap.

      • This is the only (and likely major) downfall I've had. I guess it's not really a laptop per se, although it can be used as such (uncomfortably).

I tend to use it on a table or desk so it doesn't really bother me.

Tablet mode is brilliant anyways and I find myself often using it as a tablet with the pen.

    • I have the sp4 i7. Work supplied.
I do photo editing on the go.

Performance is great, battery is not great with the i7. Mind you, I need all the processing power I can get, so I have a car charger as well.

Good price for the i5. I'd definitely consider one if I didn't have a work supplied unit.

      • can you link me to which car charger you use?

        • +1

It's just a cheap eBay one, cost about $15. Magnet on the connector isn't great, but it gets me out of trouble every now and then.
There are heaps better ones on Amazon US, but i couldnt find any that ship here.

  • Waiting for m3 to come down back to $699<

    • Use the Amex offer and you might get it close to your desired price.

      • What is the Amex deal?

        • Spend 350 or more at HN and get 50 back.

    • I don't think there is stock left

  • +1

Please add Amex 50$ cash back offer that's valid till 4/7/17.

    • +1

      Which Amex deal?

      • Spend 350 at HN with Amex card and get 50 back.

        • Is this a HN deal or an Amex deal?
I'm can't see it on Amexconnect - is there a link to this promo on Ozbargain?
          Thanks.

        • +1

@Gaz1: It was an Amex deal and you had to register. Here is the link https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/305107

        • @TRENT86:
Aaah - OK, I missed that one.
Whilst the link still shows the offer page, if you proceed to put in all your information it says that the offer is now closed as it has reached the limit.

    • If someone took up the offer I don't think they would forget :)

  • $300 extra only gets you 128gb?

    • Plus an extra 4GB RAM. I suspect the large price difference is partially because they have a lot more stock of the 128GB & most people are buying the 256GB as you can't upgrade yourself.

  • I'm after a new tablet or 2:1 to mainly watch movies netflix and surf the web, read emails etc.

Would the surface pro be kinda overkill, or am I best to just get a traditional laptop with a good screen?

    • If what u listed above is literally the only tasks u need/want to do, I'd say ur better off with an iPad. If u want a tablet and a laptop, go for surface.

  • I was all set to buy this for my wife as a early birthday present. Though decided not to.

Once the new one is actually released this will get even cheaper. And you can find other sites online selling for around the same price.

  • win10 onli QQ

  • Noooooooooooooooooooo.

its now $20 cheaper at JB :(
    lol

Edit: hmm… i wonder if i could be bothered going back to the store to ask for this:
    https://www.harveynorman.com.au/customer-service/price-match…

  • I still need to sell my surface pro 4 type cover and extra charger. Where would be the best place to do this?

  • Prices have increased by almost $200 :(

  • Hey, Update the price.
HaveyNorman friggin increased the prices on those! :(

Ordered i5 256G from JBHifi yesterday morning when it was $1274 on the website, then ordered a case on eBay. But then in the afternoon received email from JB saying my order has been cancelled with no real explanation other than "supplier confirmed unable to supply the item in this order"! Very unhappy with JB!
