Yamaha YHT-292 (RX-V365 + 5.1 Speaker package) $427 @ Domain

80

Okay I'm not sure this is a "bargain" but it certainly seems to be the cheapest advertised price going around, the next cheapest I could find was $499. My other half wanted it there and then, we were in a hurry so I didn't try bargaining the price down further but I'm sure you could probably get it down lower if you try.

My Domain store (West Gosford) had only 3 in stock (2 now) so I picked one up yesterday. It mentions the "Yamaha HTR-6230" receiver but this is actually the "RX-V365". I'm unsure if Domains nationwide have them but if this is of interest to you I'd suggest giving your local store a call, hopefully this can save you a few dollars. The big negative on this receiver is lack of audio pass-through on HDMI, not a real issue for me but if it bothers you the next model up supports it. Haven't had a chance to test it out fully yet as I didn't set it up until last night (people sleeping doh!)

$100 more for 2010 model YHT-294 3D ready, better looking speakers with stand.
Was offered at JBHifi, BingLee, now on special at Harvey Norman.

  • $72 is a big enough discount for me. Where was the $499 price? Cheapest I could find were all $500+

  • I bought this for $527 through a mate (cost price at Myer) about 12 months ago. Was a great HTIB setup then, and at this price it's even better.

Re the no audio pass-through on the HDMI; Just rig up the PS3/Blu-Ray audio through the optical inputs and have the video go through the switched HDMI and it'll work fine :)

  • no Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio? Thats pretty essential for Blu-Ray movies isnt it?

not really…. I have this system and had a blu-ray player that did the decoding of the HD audio and then sent it to the receiver via the 5.1 out (of the blu-ray), sounds was really good, but had too many cables so cleaned it all up and changed to optical (not using the HD codecs), and the sound was just as good, can't even tell the difference really, and cleaner cabling, so decided to stick to the optical. Btw, I got mine for $400 when these were on special about 6 months back. They will move on the price as the new models are out already (new models were only about to come out when I bought this HTIB).

Bottomline: don't get this if you want HD audio, otherwise great price.

        • For me, we just wanted a sound system again. Due to a bad financial patch earlier in the year I had to sell off a lot of things including amongst other things my HTPC computer & stereo setup to pay the mortgage. Now things are slowly turning around and want to get back all the things I had to sell so this is just step one. Not as good as my old setup but for now it's decent sound and later I'll probably upgrade to a higher end receiver + speakers. So it's more of a stop gap for me for which this package fits nicely.

Just curious, to the audio gurus here should there be a "break-in" period I should be concerned about? My last sound system came with a warning but that was 10 years ago. I could find no such warnings with this package although I have noticed the sub sounds a bit washed out, a fellow yamaha owner told me it takes about 10 hours of use and the sound sharpens up, something about the rubbers. I'm just not sure if I should take it easy for the early hours of ownership or just let rip :)

  • I can't quite determine if this amp can take 5.1 LPCM. If it can, then HD audio shouldn't be a problem because most blu-ray players (including PS3s) can do the decoding. Having DTS-HD and HD-MA decoding in the amp is only necessary if you like to see the pretty light on the amp display.

Note that 5.1 LPCM, DTS-HD and HD-MA can only be transmitted via HDMI cable. Optical audio/coax cannot transmit HD audio signals.

All in all looks like a decent deal, considering you could probably upgrade the speakers at a later date if you so choose because proprietary plugs are not used.

    • Nope this model can not accept any audio over HDMI, the replacement model the YHT-294 can accept multi-channel LPCM over HDMI from a Blu-ray player etc.

      • Ah ok. I thought 'audio pass-through' meant it cannot pass the audio on to a display device, such as the TV.
