  • My daughter was chasing these. Women's full length are pretty much sold out.
Plenty left for men though !

    • +2

      Great, hope she found some!

At the Box Hill South store at 7pm there were still plenty of ladies full length and 3/4's.

Burwood still had M and L in ladies full length, and 3/4's were still available in all sizes at 4pm today.

        Coa asian dont wear?

    • +3

Try Decathlon, they're basically Aldi of sporting goods, massive warhouse store opening soon at Tempe, Sydney.

      • thanks but I'm in Melb, and they're opening a single store in Sydney in a few months…might just go to Box Hill if needed

  • +2

I've always bought them when they are available at Aldi and picked up a couple of sets yesterday of compression long leggings and short top. They're much better compression and feel wise than the Kmart ones. I've never owned 2XU or Skins but for what you pay they do make a difference during activity and recovery. I use them for gym and basketball, but for the latter they make a difference especially with my ageing legs, and yes I wear shorts over them. Their sports socks are good too.

    • +2

I saw some studies which said these are bunk? But I do have a pair of skins from a previous bargain can never make myself wear this stuff

      • +1

I thought they were a massive gimmick too until I bought my first pair from Aldi a couple years back to try it out, at $16.99 back then lot cheaper to try than full priced brand names. Each to their own but you have to try those Skins to test it out, even if it's a short jog or long walk still good to use.

      • +4

Yeah I think evidence is controversial, some studies saying it can offer minor incremental performance benefits, and others saying it might not.

This was a literature review published recently in the Sports Med journal which looked at different published studies in runners and found that there wasn't a statistically significant difference in run times but there was an improvement in delayed onset muscle soreness https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27106555

Whereas a Nike funded study didn't show that they much at all https://www.gizmodo.com.au/2017/06/nike-funded-study-shows-c…

Anecdotally though, quite a few of my mates do find it has helped them.

At worst, they are basically thermals for exercising outside during winter lol

Not bad for $13.99 I guess

        • Yeah I saw the Nike study, yeah they would be good thermals for running lol and heading to the gym

        • Whereas a Nike funded study didn't show that they much at all

I wouldn't dismiss them just yet. That study involved 10 experienced male runners running for 30 minutes, once a day, for just two days.

If the study happened to find that it did make a difference, everybody would dismiss it saying it's rubbish because it's such a small sample size so the results cannot be trusted because it's a very poorly-run study that hasn't been published in a peer-reviewed journal with a high impact factor.

But because the study found that it didn't make a difference, everybody ignores that part and only focuses on the results. News sites jump on it because it draws in the clicks leading to greater ad revenue. Confirmation bias is a powerful thing. :)

I don't normally wear them when exercising. I heard they're good for recovery, so a couple of times after a long ride, I've slept with only one leg in, with the other as a control. In the morning I do actually feel a difference between my two legs. I need to do it several more times, alternating legs, to be fully convinced though.

In any case they're great for keeping my legs a little warmer when it's cold out, without having excess material flapping about.

      • Yeh I figured the idea of using them for "increased performance" is pretty dodgy. When you watch most athletes in sport, they pretty much never wear them during their actual competition e.g. all the footy codes, marathon runners

Use them as something to keep you warm but have full range of motion. Sprinters wear them to kinda keep warm but doesnt restrict their leg movement. I agree with the other person that it keeps my joints warm when you're training, but defeats the purpose when you're playing an actual game/competition and your body is doing its best to cool itself down.

      • +1

Suspect the main reason is to make their butt look better and reduce jiggly bits, basically Spanks that you can wear as regular clothing.
        (cue Activewear song)

    • +2

Never tried Aldi ones but I've got kmart and genuine skins and the skins are leaps and bounds ahead.

      • I was tempted at the recent 2XU sale I think they were $60 for elite long compression bottoms but that sale price is still pretty steep for occasional fitness gear

      • I bought some to compare to my genuine skins. Quite comparable in amount of compression and lines of stitching for knees and down the sides of the legs etc. Slightly thicker material though.

  • +1

I find these just as good as genuine skins imo. Had the shorts and the skins started pilling before the aldi ones. The skins do have a better fit feel however.

    • -1

So you had piles in your pants.

Are these suitable for a 140kg male just to wear while shopping etc?

      highly recommended in fact

Yep, part of Walmart's dress code

There are study suggests that Lycra does not improve performance https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4562588/

However, the thing it improves is the wearer's feeling and the economic.

  • Would these be suitable for winter bike riding?

My shorts aren't quite enough right now on the MTB trails, but I'm confused about the range of long pants folks wear on bikes…

    • +1

If you layer then with your current bike shorts on top it would probably work well.

That's what I've done when riding through Canberra and Melbourne winters and it works well.

    • +1

I find lycra stuff colder than bare skin when moving/windy.
Because the fabric evaporates sweat much more efficiently.

So I guess it depends what you are after, if you are hot enough to sweat then a cooldown is a good thing, if you are damp from fog or light rain then its a bad thing.

Remember people, tights are not pants!

    • +3

Only for women they are ;)

    • +1

Do Aldi sell smokes and monster energy drinks too?

      • +1

Haha it's only a matter of time it'll show up in their special buys.

Never ceases to amaze me the random stuff they come up with to sell

      • +2

No smokes. But they do have the cheapest homebrand energy drinks and cheapest vodka so you can run around in lycra on a bender until heart explodes.

        • Lol

    • +1

Many prudes from the US think tights are not pants, but:

      • this is Oz not US
      • wear whatever you feel is comfortable
  • Well…. the choice site confirms that there aren't much in it between the branded stuff to your cheapie compression clothing. (also performance improvements are questionable as well on these garments other than leg warmer)

I guess it comes down to design and brand that you want.

  • Getting fit for summer? Gettin' fat during winter! :)

  • picked myself up some short ones & long ones, as well as a compression top & a few other things :)

  • what do you use compression tights for?

    • +4

According to someone in the comments below, push-up bra for your ass.

    • Since you have a motorbike name. They are actually great under leathers or other bike gear, keep you cooler and reduce chafing and sweat/rain stickiness.

There is a danger with anything synthetic under leathers though, the heat from a long fast road slide can melt it into skin, though you get burnt and chafed either way, and if you slide that far on a road and some minor burns with melted nylon in them is your worst worry you are still pretty happy with that.

  • Casey Central still has quite a bit of stock so may go back and get some.

I grabbed a kettlebell but had to sort through a few as some had uncomfortable ridges on the handle.

  • +4

these are good coz it has the seams to lift up buttocks areas. is much like a push up bra but for your ass

  • Nice find, waiting for the muscle fibre ones that I read about in early 2000s to reach consumer level ;)

  • Lots of talk about performance on this thread. I thought skins were more for recovery?

    • Yeah I think the proposed benefits are mainly in the recovery phase, the evidence probably doesn't support performance itself despite lots of theoretical improvements.

There may be a psychological benefit where the athlete might 'feel' faster. Potentially relating to the thing where the placebo effect is still an effect. Or seeing your favourite professional athletes training in them. Ie. I really want to pick up some Under Armour because of Steph Curry. There is a UA sale on now, but just don't see the value.

  • Links seem to be redirecting to aldi 'special buys' main site instead of the actual product now, expired?

    • Hmm yeah the link is gone, but they keep the products there until they are sold out. I will confirm this.

    • +1

It expires when the store sells out, which can be minutes after opening (like the recent toilets did) or a month later when they are on 50% discount.
Some stores tend to act as clearance outlets for all the unsold bits and pieces and returns from other stores so can have old special buys for months after most have moved on.

  • Just had a look at Doncaster and Boxhill , most of sizes are sold out .

    • Anyone know of any store that still has Ladies full length mediums?

  • +2

Tried the ALDI long sleeve top. Good compression, made me more aware of my posture. ALDI's fit is suitable for "average" people. OTOH, SKINS DNAmic seem to be designed for lean athletes with 6-packs.

Great price, going to stock up some short sleeve tops as well!
