    $351.19 From hifimanofficial
Combine with a 15% off ebay wide and $298.51 is the final cost.

These are good headphones, put a lot of other headphones to shame.

    • +1

Got me there, could even throw in cashback too.

      • You put up a good price. I haven't posted the ebay as an option as I was thinking people would not be that keen on them. They are excellent to my ears. In fact it is amazing to hear some imperfections in tracks (background noise), such is a clarity. I put them through a lot of tracks that were used by headphone reviewers with notes as to what to listen to, and I think they had most of what should be noticeable. I don't know how HD800s but to be honest I am curious what the next upgrade would really bring as these are really good!

I bought them a week too early, so missed out on 15%! :\

        • +4

I have both the HD800s and He400i. The HD800s is superior by a good margin.

        • @Bargain Zombies:
Is it 5x superior? Genuinely curious.

        • @Bargain Zombies:

I have both too and agree. Especially with sonarworks in the mix

        • +2

          @g1: only 2x :)

        • @Bargain Zombies:
Thanks, I was wondering if the sound difference keeps diminishing with price increases

        • yes it's like wine , in regards to price increase vs quality but hey if you can afford it….. i have hd650 and wonder how much better the planars would be?

        • @g1: It has much more sound stage. The bass is also stronger. The transient is surprising quick with better micro detailing of each notes which I was very surprise. It would be perfect if it has a little bit more bass but I am very happy to stop looking for a headphone from now on after going through like 12 different mid range headphones through my journey.

code 'TREAT' gives you 10% off, bringing it down to US$241.60 (~AUD$319)

  • Hey, I have these sitting in front of me right now. They're good. Just don't expect loads of bass (although they do EQ well). They're also about as open as open gets. They leak a lot of sound.

    • What amp are you using for them? Is it bass heavy? I am wondering if a bass heavy amp would improve the bass response.

To be honest I don't think they are horrible in bass, it just doesn't punch as much as other headphones. I find them easier to listen to than sennheiser momentum 2.0 as momentum's bass sips into all of the music whilst these maintain a lot of clarity

      • Yeah the bass definitely isn't bad, it's just maybe not what some people would expect (I like it myself). I'm currently using an FX-Audio DAC X6 but I'm looking at buying something more powerful soon.

too rich for my budget but +1 upvote for the

Missus throw a fit when you were considering a pair of HD800s over fixing the gutters?

I have the HE-400S and they're great. Such great sound quality, but they will annoy anyone you share a room with as they're almost as loud going out as they are going in.

  • +1

@Charybdia - tell her it doubles as a handbag

  • Do you really need an amp to drive 35ohm? I currently have some Sony MDR-Z1 headphones which are kind of too bass heavy so keen to try something else.

    • Impedance is only half of the equation. These are planars and they're not nearly as efficient (as in, they have low sensitivity) as a lot of headphones with dynamic drivers. They need a fair bit of power to properly drive the low end pretty much.

    • Do you mean https://www.whathifi.com/sony/mdr-z1r/review ?
They are a whole different price range and you may be looking at something like https://addictedtoaudio.com.au/collections/headphones/produc… ?

As far as the amp question goes, I only have a FiiO e17k at the moment and it sounds better on that than straight from phone or laptop. I have tried the headphones on the home amplifier and to be honest I noticed the difference in 'signature' more than anything…

    • Sony MDR-Z1 is not bass heavy if you drive them right. I initially thought that when I just used the Sony PHA-3, but then I switched over to more powerful tube amps and it sounds just right.

  • This deal is so tempting. The only problem is that I bought the Fidelio X2 a few months ago

The X2 are amazing in their own way, sound stage is wiiiiiiide. So wide that listening to 70's and 60's music is unbearable due to their tenancy to put music tracks all to the left (such as guitar) with no crossover, the x2 soundstage makes such tracks sound disjointed. On the other hand, orchestral and heavy metal sound great

    • +1

Buy them, try them, flip them
It's the only way you'll know for certain

    • +1

I own both the X2 and the 400i. They sound totally different and complement each other well. The 400i is great for the kinds of music you mentioned above.

    • +1

I have tried both. Pro for Fidelio is the soundstage and bass. The 400i has much better mid tone imaging with greater micro detailing of notes and vocal. It depends on what you are listening. There are pros and cons. Also the Fidelio is heavy and less comfortable.

    • this is great advice guys, thanks

im keen to try them and then flip it or the x2's depending on the outcome, i'll just wait for the next 20% off ebay code to realise it ;)

  • How does it compare to Sennheiser HD 6xx currently on Massdrop? They are asking USD249.99 with free shipping to Oz with 2 days remaining until the end of the drop.

    • +1

Found the answer to my own question:
      https://www.head-fi.org/f/showcase/hifiman-he-400i.20200/
Conclusion is they are in a similar class sound wise.

    • +1

I've owned both - ended up selling the 400i because I liked the 6XX better.

      Pro's for the Senn:
      Better bass
Better overall sound (when paired with an amp that can really push them)
      Build quality
      Look

      Pro's for the HiFiMan:
      More detail in the treble
Comfort around the ears - although can get hot.
Doesn't need an expensive amp to sound great

      • 'build quality' is an understatement. They were built by some drunk kids in a chinese alleyway and will fall apart in a light breeze.

I don't like Senns, but this one is an easy choice.

        • Yep, that's part of the reason why I went for the HD6XX. You can tell that they are going to last you 10 years. But, if you look after the 400i's they will still last - as long as they are not faulty to begin with.

    • +1

Bass - HD6XX is better with a bit more sub-bass. It is not as well control as the 400i though.
Mid range - 400i is better with crisper and micro details in the notes. The faster transient time between notes are pretty amazing for this price range.
Treble - 400i is better and sound nicely control. The HD6XX is not too bad either.

  • Currently have a pair of Ultrasone 900 Pro's for desk use/gaming and have some QC35's for everything else.
I nearly picked up the HE-400's when I was looking at the 900's a few years back but they were about 500 bucks at the time and I couldn't justify the expense over the 900's. Anyone compare the two?

I'm mostly using them for Spotify/Gaming/Youtube, so it's not like I'm really an audiophile at all

  • hifimans warranty sucks balls and i wouldn't trust them to do anything, buy them from another store and go through the store with problems instead

  • These are actually cheaper to buy in China, but I don't think they ship overseas. If you're going there it's definitely worth your while to bring a pair back. The price online was 1200 yuan or ~$230.

  • So whats wrong with your gutter?

    • Wife.

  • Sorry, but is it much better than bose qc35?

    • +3

The Bose and these headphones are designed for completely separate purposes. If you looking for noise isolation, the QC35 wins hands down. If you are looking to listen at home with an amp and have a larger sound stage because the headphones are open, the HE-400 will win. The HE-400 will always give you better audio, as long as you are listening in a quiet environment.

    • -1

yes, the difference is like comparing yaris with lexus

      • They're still both a Toyota though lol

        • yes they both replay sound.

      • +3

lol. not a valid comparison…. Different purposes. Try wearing these on a airplane and QC35 will sound better than HE-400.
Daabido did summarize it very well though.

        • -1

yes as you did the comparison properly :)
Yaris wins economically but lexus still much better by common sense.

        • +4

@lovbargain: comparisons still off but you can stop now.

  • Hey OP. Noob question may be but can you please explain "These cans are planar magentic headphones so they will need an amplifier".

    • 'planar magnetic' just means they have a different mechanism for generating sound than your standard dynamic-driver headphones.

They need an amp means.. they need an amp.

      • Thanks. Can I just connect this to my phone and use it? Or need to buy anything separate to use this headphone

        • Your phone wont have enough power to properly drive them. Hence why you would need an amp.

        • You can. They would be better with an amp. I would say the bigger issue would be the phone DAC as that could feed the headphones poor sound reproduction.

  • Does anyone have experience using these with the fiio E12 amp and/or X5 DAP?

    • +1

      My x5ii runs them fine.

That said, I ended up giving them to someone after a few weeks, they are pretty average. If you have even midrange headphones already, it's not going to be an upgrade.

    • E17k is fine as that is what I am using. if that provides any comparison

  • This or a little more for m1060? Anyone know ? I just want to get one planar headphone only because most of the planar share a similar sound signature or close. Only thing left for me to chose is comfortable and I havent try any of em yet :(.

  • I have landed several planes with these. 10/10

  • How open is the sound stage? Would these be suitable for gaming purposes??

Currently own a pair DT770's run with a DAC/AMP which make for booming sound, but positionally not the best. Good sound stage just not great. Was considering the DT990's but would these be an improvement?

    • The sound stage is quite good. I would happily game in them.

    • +1

      Sound stage is good.

I was listening to a track used by headphone reviewer and the notes for the track said that there are four string instruments all in a different position and therefore when each of the instruments plays their turn good headphones should make it clear that the sound comes from a different part of the recorded space. It was clear with these headphones that each instrument was in a different physical space, it was possible to point to different location.

  • Anyone that can compare these to an AKG702?

    • +1

The AKG is more balance and not bad with every department. The Hifiman has bass but less sub-bass. The Bass is there and more control. The transient time of the Hifiman is amazingly fast and the high frequency is very well control and lovely. The mid range is much superior than the AKG.

      • Thanks, great detail.

  • Hmmm… Is this an upgrade over my current AKG 7XX from Massdrop ?
Both are black, so I potentially can substitute the headphones without my wife noticing…

  • How does these compare to Beyerdynamic DT 770 pro 80 ohms? any idea?

  • How do these compare to AKG Q701?

  • After doing some online research, the newer HE400S model is reviewed quite positively. The 400s is described as being more 'warm' and the 400i more 'analytical'

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00Y2EOI94/ref=psdc_12097479011_t5…

HE400s is on ebay from china $329 (minus any discounts), but keep in mind that buying better earpads is recommended for the 400s (which are included on the 400i)

Anyone here have any real life experience with the 's' model?
