28 Degrees Card Now Offering Cashback ($20 for $300 spend)

140

Got the attached offer on my 28 Degree card, spend $300 in 1 or more transactions and receive a $20 credit. It may be targeted as I can not find any mention of it on their site, and yes it may not be the best offer at a 6.66% discount. However this could be the start of great things with a no annual fee card with no currency conversion fees and no overseas transaction fees. Basically no fees for anything and you get some rewards.

Anyone else receive this offer?

I think you need to opt in for credit increases to get the offer.

    • I have never received or asked for any credit increases. They might have changed it?

I had a couple way back when I got the card. Spent the money, never got the credit back, they claimed when I called never to know anything about the offers. Use it for Amazon purchases in us$ and not much else really.

I had this offer a while back too. Also spent the money and never got the credit back. Didn't bother calling them as any time I've had to talk to their customer service it's been a horrible experience. I use it for online purchases in other currencies and for overseas travel. Started using the Bankwest Zero card instead since they stopped charging currency and international transaction fees. Because they have better service.

      • We just dropped the Bankwest Zero Platinum - our cards expired just as we needed to use them to buy flights and the troglodytes wanted us to go through some palaver to prove that we were still worthy of credit.

Got the ANZ Black deal instead (~70K QFF points). 28Degree card still needed for O/S purchases as ANZ think that numpties are happy to pay extortionate fees for purchases made in foreign currencies, IF they're getting precious points!

Don't love the 28Degree program - but it is effective if you don't need to talk to a human being (and you don't intend to be a credit revolver).

    • Ditto

EDIT: I just went back and found the credit a couple of statements after meeting the qualifying spend. So it did work for me.

  • Nope not got it, maybe cause I've spent too much and have claimed too much price protection.

I had got it sometime back and got $20 back ! No problems there !

    • Yup same here got $20 Cashback from previous offer.

  • Is the 28 degrees card still the best / a good option for overseas purchases?

    • +3

The best credit card is Bankwest Zero Platinum, and Debit card is the Citibank Plus.

      • +2

Note that Bankwest Zero Platinum needs annual income over 60k, while 28 degrees can be had on a student income.

        • 28D is now a Platinum card too though so also has 6k minimum limit (unless you're an existing customer

        • @Shadowsfury: Yes, but you can lower the limit once you got the card.

        • @bargainaus:

Oh really - so they don't strictly enforce the $6K?

      • +1

Could you clarify how the BankWest card is better than 28 Degrees card?

        • +1

          Latitude is awful.

        • +1

All being same, Bankwest comes with free travel insurance.

        • @bargainaus:

The also have an excellent Mobile App, you can search for transactions by store name or transaction amount.

They have push notifications too so you get reminders when your credit card payment is due, push notifications when transactions take place. e.g. Overseas transactions.

You can also view your statements in the App.

Also no fees for paying via BPAY.

      • How about the Coles Rewards Mastercard? The one with annual fee also lets you earn 2 points for every dollar spent. Same features as the Citibank Plus (who is now also with Mastercard).

    • Still a great option because it's free. I have it along with Citibank Plus Debit and Bankwest Platinum. Very handy when OS or just online purchases in general.

I think 28 Degrees stopped the no transaction fees on overseas currency some time ago.

    • Please check your notes. Perhaps it was something to do with withdrawing cash overseas.

      • Yep, that was it.

People used to add funds onto their card to enable $ withdrawal while overseas. But then a few years ago 28 degrees added a fee onto doing that. That was when I applied for the Citibank debit card.

      • Yes that was it, thank you. knew it was something like that.
Lol. check my down votes…so cruel you wallys.

  • I never touch my card anymore, the bpay repayment fees killed it.

That and the Aussie dollar stinks so I rarely buy anything overseas lately anyway.

    • You can still use thier bank account transfer tool and attract $0 in fees though

      • I know, but that's cumbersome, it also only allows you to do it once a week or so.

        BPay appears the following day.

Used 28 degrees to buy a phone through PayPal and they charged me 1 dollar for the transaction.
The phone was quoted in AUD, but it was an overseas site.
    "PAYMENT HANDLING FEE (ONLINE)"
Sucks. Will not use for online paymets anymore.

    • +2

I think that might have less to do with your purchase and more to do with the method of paying off your credit card balance. Did you use BPay?

      • Right, I haven't even noticed it. I have always been paying from the 28 degrees site, but did do Bpay.
So can happen to anyone unfortunately. I was probably paying other bills and just did it in a batch.

        • Yeah they introduced that fee while I was OS last year and caught me out, have definitely used the card less since then but still handy.

        • @Mechz:
Yes, I am aware of the fee, and this is the first time it happened to me.

    • PAYMENT HANDLING FEE (ONLINE) is usually the charge that they now charge you for paying your account via BPay. I've bought stacks of stuff online, both overseas and here in different currencies, and never received this charge (it only appears a few days after I top up my account via BPay).

  • Is direct debit still the best way to pay and avoid fees?

    • +2

Yes. The only other fee-free way is to write a cheque (remember those?) and trust Australia post to deliver it. Not really fee-free as you have to pay for a stamp.

    • +3

I make the payment from within their online service centre. There are restrictions, e.g. cannot make another payment within 5 days of last payment, using this method. But so far it has worked OK for me.
