  Qantas is ~$200 more with no layover. Direct flight to LA for those who prefer that.

  Did this trip last year with Fiji air. Highly recommended- good service, nice plane, and Fiji was a hassle-free and inexpensive stopover. I spent a couple days at hostel type accom. for ~$13 a night. Let's hope the AUD stays strong

    That sounds great but when I looked I couldn't really find one with more than 12 hours (over the night ) layover is there a specific way to extend that stopover for no extra $$ or do you just have to find the exact flight ?

      I guess he has to pay extra for that specific flights. Any layover more than 24hour is treated as stopover and you will have to pay departure airport tax. Fiji departure airport tax is ridiculously expensive. Last time I check it is $130+ The sale fare is specific to those dates on the search so when you vary the date the fare can be significantly increased.

      I remember the 12 hr + gap being unavoidable on my flight TO the USA, but my flight BACK to AUS had an option of a 3 hr stop over.

    What did you do in Fiji? I booked my flights earlier this year to LA with a 3 day stopover, I just have no idea what to do in Fiji yet. I've never been and don't know anyone who has!

      Suva is the main city and you fly into the secondary city of Nandi. the majority population are Indian and live mainly inland on the main island and in the major cities. the Fijian Islander population is mostly on the coast and outlying islands. it is at least a day, perhaps two day, round trip around the main island coastal road. the barrier reef on the south coast is a few hundred meters from the beach and the inshore lagoons are calm. in the north the reef are much further offshore. many beaches have resorts so i'm not sure what public access would be like.

  not sure what option should i select when i tap on select as it shows bunch of options like expedia or booking and other sites,
  which one is trustable?

    I've used Expedia before and haven't had any issues. You also get further discount with Expedia if you book accommodation at same time.

        when you book with third-party sites be sure you won't be changing your ticket. They often have exorbitant change fees in addition to the airline change fees; it's a money-spinner. Read the T&C's.

        I recently changed a ticket booked with Expedia without any problems. I just contacted the airline directly. I assume it's the same for other websites.

        @carwashhair: That is exactly right. I got burnt with FlightCentre before. You can't change your flight directly with the airline unless you have already depart your first flight of your itinerary and have to go to the airlines office to change.

  Virgin is about $100 more for direct in Oct/Nov from Melbourne. Probably worth using them instead.

  Can get AirNZ for about $40 more on those dates. For anybody who trials and retains Velocity Gold (80 status credits in 3 months), AirNZ is a far better option, as you'll get lounge access before each flight.

  If you're looking at New York, you can fly Etihad for ~$1080 (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/314106). Not sure what internal flights would be like to do LA- NY tho.
