Telstra TV $89 Delivered from Telstra

130
NETBALLTTV

This deal is still active… at least the Coupon Code bit is..
The Netflix deal has ended.

$89 delivered when you order your Telstra TV online now and enter the promo code: NETBALLTTV

Apart from Apple TV 4 at $200+, and FetchTV at $149+ this is the only off the shelf device that currently has full support for all local network catchup services (at least that I'm aware of).
This also does Foxtel Streaming in HD (the only device capable to date?)

Officially: Offer only available online and for a limited time only to Telstra Home Broadband customers.
Reality: There is no check that you're a Telstra Home Broadband Customer in the buying process, all you need is a Telstra ID in order to set up the device.

Thanks to Spackbace in the other deal for this link to sideload Plex.

piece of crap only 12 apps available …………not worth it

    • -1

Agree.. its a roku that u cant put other apps on … what a waste.

      • +1

Telstra has this amazing habit of selling great devices that they've turned into barely functional devices by putting their own firmware onto them.

    • +3

Where else can you get all local channels, and Foxtel HD?

    • +1

You can sideload apps, I use Plex for example, and I find this a handy little player. All the same, I picked up mine free with another Telstra product, and am not sure if I would've picked it up otherwise.

    • +3

Actually no, I have 3 (from the Netflix deal) rock solid units.
Best device for hd Foxtel, with the iq3 experience, more stable than the iq3.
Foxtel now is a lot cheaper than Foxtel tv and you get it in multi rooms at the same price.
So you can just subscribe during GOT or holidays, without the hassle of a Foxtel install..
Netflix super fast, better than my TV app or via my amp.
Sidelloaded plex, and the inbuilt apps are not bad.

It's no roku 3 And yes some better android boxes (most suck), but for ease of use even without the Netflix bonus still a good price.

And yes if you have a new tv you would NOT need this.

      • Yep. I've 3 as well. Plex sideloaded…some issues with DTS (change to 2 channel) and struggles if transcoding on server and it's not up to scratch (need decent chip if serving to multiple boxes) but for my needs it's all I require for a network and media streaming device really.

N.B. I do work for the company (netops) however please don't tar and feather me for that reason, and has absolutely zero bearing on above comments.

  • Do these have any promos attached to them eg couple months free Stan, or Netflix etc?

    • Two new movie rentals, fresh from the cinema in your first month with BigPond Movies (for first time registrations)

      • The two free movies were for when you activated your Telstra TV before 30 June 2017

    • -7

Telstra ain't going to let you use Netflix lel. They want you paying for TV and advertising on the steaming turd that is Foxtel.

      • +1

Minimal research would have elicited the fact that Telstra were offering this device with Netflix for free!

  • +3

not really worth it without the netflix promo

  • +1

So pay $89 just to watch netball???

    • $89 for the little streaming set top box.
Think AppleTV3 or any of the Android TV boxes.

The big advantage of this (if you care) is that only AppleTV 4 has ABC iView, SBS On Demand and the other channel's catchup apps native to the system.

Android units can download the respective Android apps, but they're designed for touch control, not button remote control.

      • +1

Except that Android boxes allow you to install almost every single Android app ever invented. This has a total of twelve apps available.

        • +1

Great, and then you get the "joy" of using an air mouse or a standard mouse to interact with them..

        • @scubacoles: Or you could have a remote that a lot of boxes come with. Alternatively you could purchase one for $10.

        • +1

          @potplanty:

Still need some sort of mouse to interact with touch only designed apps.
If I need to use a mouse, or mouse replacement, may as well just stick with a Laptop plugged into the TV.

        • @scubacoles: actually you don't and in thr case of the xiaomi mi box they have android tv apps and thoses that don't they have community nodded APKs that work really well.

        • @Dezeption:
Yeah, I've sideloaded the github ABC iView App to my MiBox, it's pretty rubbish, I'll continue to Chromecast iView.
the SBS On Demand App I've read currently doesn't work due to the Login Requirement.

Personally I don't care for the other channels offerings (ie Reality TV) so haven't tried them if they exist.

If you have recommendations of excellent community MiBox apps I'm happy to hear them.

        • I bought it to do Netflix and stream 7+ect, I was pleased, had to turn off some audio as it's default setting kept unsyncing with the picture but otherwise it's been great, so much so that my parents stole it lol.

  • I'm not convinced it's worth it, but what options are available?

    • +2

most smart tv can do everything the roku can, even the cheap china streamer box is better

      • Agree. For $89, you can buy a middle to high range Android TV box with 4K TV support.

I used my friend's Telstra TV box, and it's a rubbish - I cannot even watch Youtube as it says there is a digital copy rights violation etc., so disappointing.

        • YouTube is fine on mine. I did have a copywrite violation and green screen watching Foxtel once, replaced the hdmi cable and never came back.
I get the usual copywrite message on my pc but that is YouTube detecting and blocking content not the device.

      • +1

Where else can you get all local channels, and Foxtel HD?

    • Your options are to waste your money on this or save your money for something worthwhile.

    • +1

You could spend a LOT more and get a PVR. I have the Beyonwiz T4 and love it as I can time shift, record, store 'other' movies and shows on the hard drive, etc. etc. The EPG component alone is worth the price of admissions as it can automatically record an entire season of shows.
      But… it ain't cheap!

  • Aren't they supposedly releasing a fancy new android TV 4k Telstra unit shortly?

  • +5

These boxes allow you to stream Fox Sports in glorious HD.

As far as a know, none of the Foxtel apps on TV's allow the HD sport streams yet.

    • +2

      HD available on PS4

  • +2

I have never taken mine out of the box. I should check if it can be flashed with Roku firmware and get rid of the Telstra rubbish.

    • whats wrong with the telstra firmware?

      • How do you like a total of twelve apps available to yourself?

        • I'm running only 6 apps on my Mi Box… so 12 apps should be fine!

        • @scubacoles: But you got the choice of which apps from the millions available. Telstra give you twelve and tell you to suck it up if you don't like them.

        • +2

          @potplanty:

No, there's not that many apps available on Mi Box..
Cause it runs Android TV… which requires apps designed for interaction with a remote.

  • +1

i picked up one of these from gumtree sealed for $50. basically got it for the free 2 week foxtel trial.

the hd stations look great. on demand looks ok. the free to air apps are good.

even sideloaded plex classic on it as a backup in case our HTPC goes down.

for $50, its great value. not sure i'd spend $90 on it.

    • +2

      Good job!
I've had a search running on Ebay and Gumtree for months… they're never less than $50 used in my area, the current one I can see is asking $50 and the remote is missing a button!
eBay units regularly sell for $70+ plus shipping.

Having paid $70 for a Mi box recently, I reckon $89 is decent..
And for my Mum, who wants the FTA catchup services easily available, it was either this or AppleTV4 that I could decipher…
Obviously better when you got 6 months free Netflix, but the Telstra hate is blinding most people here.

  • +1

Apart from Apple TV 4 at $200+, this is the only off the shelf device that currently has full support for all local network catchup services (at least that I'm aware of).

Fetch TV is the other device - Mini is $149 RRP:

    • Thanks… so this is still looking like a decent price for the intended purpose then.

After what they did to these boxes, I don't think they can even handle a full rate Foxtel HD stream, especially with however they've bungled the encoding. Better off finding an Android TV OS device (such as the one they're about to release) that has a more recent SoC to handle their wasteful nonsense. Foxtel seems to agree, because they are trying to throw these things out the door.

With the advent of Foxtel Now, and no Netflix voucher, this is a total waste of money compared to something like an imported Mi Box.

One small note: these things barely drop their power consumption while on standby, so if you don't want it slow-roasting on your TV stand, unplug it when you're not using it.

    • Will be pretty annoyed if your info is correct and there's an Android TV box pending with all the supported apps ported across.

      • +1
        • Definitely not annoyed at that news… People here complaining about Telstra locking stuff down… Foxtel make Telstra look like beginners at locking stuff down!

        • @scubacoles: I'd be shocked if they managed to lock down Android TV OS to the same extent as their Roku device.

It'll be a HDCP device and they'll use that for copy protection.

    • After a while on no use the white light goes off and screensaver kicks in.
I recall the power dropped at the wall, but you need a sensitive unit as these use sfa power. My tv drew more in standby so wasn't too concerned.

If you put into Dev mode standby isn't as efficient.

  • +1

Not a bad little box. Fox sports channels are in HD and look great.

Also acts like a Chromecast too.

  • Can you play H.264/MKV files via a USB port on this or has Telstra locked that down as well?

    • +1

You can but it's a pretty barebones experience, nothing like XBMC/etc.

  • ive got this for free when I joined telstra for their home broadbank.
is my telstra account ID and stuff attached to the device?

    • +1

I think it only becomes attached when you activate it to your login.

  • +1

These are pretty good little boxes with a high SAF.

That said, you can usually get them NIB second hand for cheaper from the usual places because people get them free with the broadband contract and don't want them.

    • SAF = WAF (or maybe the politically correct version - Significant other Acceptance Factor?)

      • SAF is already PC enough. Do husbands ever complain the that wife bought a too-complicated gadget?

  • So if I am a Telstra BB customer are all the downloads unmetered? And can I get Foxtel HD through this? As the SD foxtel on a 126 cm TV is pretty poor!

    • -2

      Yes

    • "So if I am a Telstra BB customer are all the downloads unmetered?"

"Telstra TV usage will count towards your home broadband data allowance. Unmetered apps, such as BigPond Movies, won’t count towards your data allowance on most Telstra Home Broadband connections at home."

      • Only the Bigpond Movies. The catchup TV and Netflix etc is counted as download.

  • +2

OK so you could blow me down with a feather at the moment..
I bought this yesterday for my Mum no more than 30 hours ago… (It was some time yesterday and my report to reactivate the original post was actioned 23 hours, 48 minutes ago) and she's just messaged to tell me a parcel from Telstra has arrived!

Now it may just be an empty box with a "thankyou for your order, we will process it soon" note in it - probably 99.999% likelihood - but that still leaves a 0.001% chance that Telstra have shipped this to Suburban Adelaide within 30 hours!
I wouldn't even expect that level of service if Mum lived next door to the Telstra Warehouse where they keep these and was performing XXX favours on the Warehouse Manager!

  • +2

Just a note for those new to these type of streaming devices. If the unit can be left on when you switch off the TV you may find it still streaming live content and chewing broadband usage. After doing that accidentally with my Roku (for days) I set it up on a power sensing board so it shuts down when the TV is switched off.

  • +2

These are great for less tech-capable people who just want a simple box with catchup TV, Netflix and Stan.
The other way to get all those features is a suitable Blu-ray player.

Buy this for your Mum, and put your own Netflix account in it to share.

No Kodi, but you can install a Plex client using a developer-mode hack. Then run a plex server with your library on a desktop/laptop.
Or use another device for local library playing.

Hit the nail on the head for my plans.

I have one of these an android Tv box. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Q-BOX-Android-6-0-TV-BOX-K0DI-16-…

I use it to stream from my Nas , works great and with the remote control its easy to use and it comes pre-loaded with heaps of apps , this has replaced my WD HDTV Live and i love it.

    • OK for Kodi, but will be better if you replace Android with LibreElec.

Lousy for Netflix and youtube as it only does low-def, and made for touchscreen interface.
I hope you mean to suggest this in addition to a telstra-TV, just for Kodi, not instead of it.

  • This does appear to be a re-branded Roku 3 probably with a Telstra branded firmware on it and custom remote control.

  • +1

There's 30 available apps on it now. It's good for catch up TV. The Roku 3 has a better remote. The TelstraTV has the same remote as the Roku 4 (not as nice to use as the Roku3).

    Roku media player
    A bunch o sports channels
    A kids channel
    Crunchyroll
    A few US news channels
