Did you miss the 100k QFF points?

    • +1

100k is easily worth a few thousand if redeemed correctly ;)

      • I have more than that at the moment. I was going to use them for a flight to London.

Is there something better? What did you mean by "redeemed correctly"?

        • In my book "redeemed correctly" means you getting max value from your points. For me that's redeeming them for business or first class tickets. Obviously some people don't agree with that but just keep in mind that you can now find return flights to Europe (economy) for around $1000. So if you were to redeem points for economy flights your taxes alone would kill any value.

    • +1

The 100k points alone can be redeemed for $500 worth of Woolworths gift cards. Yes, I am aware people will say flights are better value but Gift Cards are the lazy option and even the lazy option gives you a greater return than the annual fee.

    • That's OK for the first year but no 100K points in subsequent years. Is it still worth $450/year then? Keep in mind also a lot of places have 2-5% surcharges (all my local servos, for example) on Amex cards. I'm guessing if you're someone who has time to constantly "fiddle" you can get the value out of these cards, otherwise it's better to stay away

  • What is the point reward for gov body?
100,000 Bonus Qantas Points for new applicants if I have already got Amex card?
Can I transfer domestic return Economy flight to any other people or only to secondary card holder?

    • Hi all the answers to your questions can be found by clicking through.
In regards to the free flight, you can book it in anyone's name.

      • Thank you for your reply.
Sorry I haven't found the answer for first and second points.
so is it still 1.5 points for dollar spend in Electricity bills?

        Thank you

        • gov spend is 0.5 points per dollar and same for utilities. One of the few cards that pays full 1.5 points per dollar on phone and utilities is the explorer card.

        • Depends who your electricity provider is. If they provide Paypal, you'll still earn 1.5 ppd.

  • Love Amex card but DON'T EVER use the offer Balance Transfer, its trap there.

    • -1

BT is what it is… as long as you know the terms and conditions it's not really a trap :)

      • -1

I did balance transfer from my Citibank to Amex and they charged me 1% for fee (fair enough).
But then every month now, they will charge me additional amount 30-40$ depending (I don't know base on what) even I paid all the amount of closing balance plus min monthly balance transfer (or even more)on time.

The only way they told me I wont get charged addtional fee if I stop using the Amex card and pay off all balance transfer amount first.

So I asked them in that case, how customers used balance transfer can spend 1500$ to get the 100k points. And they just muted and just refer to some term and links which you never see it from first place. I even did call Amex before to ask the balance transfer and they explained me very clearly. This is not first time I did balance transfer but with NAB, everything goes smoothly plus no fee, and no additional charge. And If I have enough $ to pay off balance transfer amount, why do I need to transfer to Amex and have Pay 1% fee, no points, additional monthly charge etc… Its BS to me.

        • Yes when it comes to BT you have to pay close attention to the T&C. Personally i wouldn't do it with a 1% establishment fee, there are some non-point earning cards that offer better deals.

        • My previous BT with NAB is perfect and its exact what they agree to offer. Its true as what you said I need to read and check more carefully next time if I do BT

  • Probably a stupid question but if i have an amex issues card (primary cardholder) and my wife has a supp card as part of that card, does that disqualify her from applying and receiving the bonus points if she was to apply for this one?

    • Sup card does not count, your wife holding a sup card is still eligible to get the 100k bonus

  • +3

Hi points4life - what do you receive if we sign up via this offer? Thanks for transparency.

      • +4

If it makes a difference, Point Hacks are pretty open with the commissions they are paid for each Credit Card application that gets approved. That's probably a better analogy than "telling customers what you earn".

edit: FYI I did not neg you

      • +6

That attitude..you are drilling holes in boat mate..

        • -1

It's an exclusive partner offer, it states that in the description. This means I get compensation as a partner.
Definitely not as much as Point Hacks and I don't see how disclosing the details would help you?

        • +4

@points4life: As illumination said…you should be transparent. Nobody will begrudge you your commission (even if you are ripping off PointHacks with his name and business model)…so long as you're not being a douche.

      • +2

I think you'll find as it's a financial product, and you are gaining from and arranging for people to apply, it's different from just any employee work.

There are significant requirements around financial product sales and advertising.

      • +3

No need to get defensive @points4life I was just curious as there was no disclaimer or anything on your site, which I see there is now a few hours later.
Just making sure OzBargain community can trust all credit card affiliate publishers like yourself.
Especially when important financial and credit decisions are involved, not just lots of points.

  • Hi points4life, I currently have a bank issued Amex card with my home loan (~$400 annual fee) and so would be eligible for this new Amex issued credit card (~$400 annual fee).

This deal sounds good but don't want to be paying two different annual fees for both credit cards. But it looks like the Amex issued credit card can be offset via the 100K QF points, free return flight and lounge passes perks.

Keen to get your thoughts and also just wanted to confirm that the 100K QF points is a once off bonus sign up and not renewed annually?

    :)

    • Hi, yes if you have a bank issued card you can get the Amex 100k sign up bonus :)
100,000 and the flight is worth much more than the annual fee :)

      • Thanks, but just wanted to confirm that the 100K bonus is a once off on sign up and not renewed annually?

So in future years the annual fee for Amex issued credit card will only be offset by the free flight?

        • seems to be that way. Bonus points are granted if you spend $1500 in the first 3 months.

        • correct :)

    • 100k can get you around 3 x Melbourne - Sydney return flights which is worth more than the $450 annual fee - which on top comes with a return flight built in.

Pretty sure this is a once off bonus.

      • agree. first year is not too bad. not sure if the ANZ adventurer is still out there. from memory, it's $250 annual fee with similar features.

        • I'd like to add that the ANZ adventures card has much better flight redemption offers. You can fly Melbourne to Perth

      • Your calculation is incorrect; 100,000 QFF points is 6.25 Sydney to Melbourne return flights. It's 16,000 points for Classic Reward return flight.

        • Even better :)

    • Amex is hoping that you will stay the second year and pay the fees. This is the one off initial enticer for you try out the card. Same tactic used by banks. You just need to be strict and remember to cancel your cards at 11.5 months.

      • You answered my next question :) Was going to ask if there was a minimum contractual period that you had to sign up for the new Amex card and what was stopping you from cancelling after the first year.

Thanks all for your replies :)

        • No there's no contract. If you want to close the card after a week you could do so.
Annual fee is mostly offset by the free flight + lounge access which you get each year. Of course there is the 1.5 ppd earn rate to consider as well.

        • +3

You basically want to stay until at least you get the points credited which is about three months and then as you have 9 months of a free Amex to use for those Amex connect offers and shop small in November that you will soon make this your favorite card and will then be tempted to keep it after 12 months.

          RESIST!

  • Does anyone know how long QFF points are valid for and would be still redeemable if the AMEX card were to be cancelled later e.g. after 12 months?

    • Qantas points valid forever, except if no activity in account for 18 months (very easy to get around this by making a purchase from e-mall/having a fee free Qantas Amex card to spend on.

      • Thanks for the info. I was just thinking that after using the 100K bonus points, the annual fee seems typically higher than the average Qantas domestic flight. That's not taking into account using the card for everyday purchases (groceries, fuel etc) though where the extra benefit/points may come in. Probably overthinking it!

        • All valid points (pardon the pun). That's why IMO the Velocity card is a better deal - points are worth slightly more, taxes always less, availability generally better, and, if you were to keep it, $350 for a return flight with two VA lounge passes and the two Amex lounge visits, make it reasonable value.

        • Yeh not a bad idea to cancel after 12 months to avoid annual fee.

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows:
Agree. Velocity card looks the better deal.

  • should i risk for the 100k bonus point..?!? sigh!!

    • story of my life :P

  • I just applied and got approved but mis-calculated my dates so I need to cancel now :(

Any idea on how to do this?

    • Just don't activate the card when it arrives. Keep in mind that you will get a credit hit though

    • What did you miscalculate?

  • responding to Tiggrrrrr 's post 47 min ago - I agree - Qantas is shifty

the whole process of " Requesting an upgrade " is putting me off

you are asked to pay a premium price to be able to be upgraded = win for Qantas already

then "they" decide you are not eligible for an upgrade. for whatever reason …on short notice

I prefer more transparent airlines frequent flyer programs where you can earn and redeem loyalty mile points ,

as I want it …not by request - ha

    • +2

I always book redemption flights outright in first or business. It's very transparent, just takes patience finding available flights :)

  • Hi @points4life,

I used to have AMEX card but cancelled it 10 years ago, would I still be eligible?

    • +1

Yep you're eligible for the 100k bonus. Minimum wait time between cancellation is 18 months :)

      • Thank you!

  • Does anyone know if being an additional card holder on someone else's Amex account counts as an existing product holder and thus ineligible for the new cardholder bonuses?

    • +1

If you're a sup card holder you are eligible for this deal :)

      • Thanks! Appreciate the deal + reply

    • +3

Holding a supplementary card does not exclude you from these sort of new cardholder bonuses.

      edit: Beaten

  • How does applying for another credit card like this effect your credit rating?

I have a 28degree ($1500) and a nab platinum ($6000) with no history of bad debts or defaults.

Would applying for this detrimentally effect my credit rating? Should i get rid of a card before applying ?

    • It doesn't affect your credit rating but lowers your borrow capacity

      • It does affect your credit rating @loungelizzard
Any type of credit you get will incur a hit on your file. But only 2 cards and a good history would equal a great credit score. You can check this for free with the links i posted or seek financial advice.

        • Unless you're continuously applying for/cancelling credit (CC, loans etc) or the total CC limits are significant (compared to your income) applying for another CC will have a minimal/zero effect.

    • I'm no financial advisor but I'd say you're fine. I have around 8 credit cards open and apply for offer throughout the year,
just monitor your score. There are free services such as: https://www.creditsavvy.com.au/ and https://www.getcreditscore.com.au/
One is D&B the other one Equifax (fromer Veda).

  • OP (or anyone else) do you know if the supplementary card holders can use the Sydney AMEX lounge passes if the primary cardholder is not there? I never fly internationally out of Sydney but the missus does

    • +1

I can't say for sure but i don't think it's a problem. Just give amex a call to confirm.
I would imagine they can transfer them to the sup card

    • +1

If it's the same as all the other AMEX cards, yes they can.

Source: I have personally done this before.

      • Awesome. Did you have to phone up AMEX and get them to transfer to the supplementary card, or was it just automatic?

        • +2

No, the way it works is the card that you're using to gain access has to match the name of the boarding pass. So basically if you are going to be the primary cardholder but you want your missus to be able to use the Sydney AMEX lounge, just get a supplementary card issued in her name. Make sure she brings it with her to Sydney, and it'll be swiped and matched up against the name on the boarding pass to grant her access.

  • Hey Points4Life,

To be clear, this doesn't include status credits right?

    • Correct, unfortunately no status credits involved.

  • here come some silly questions (sorry)
    1. is there a time limit to using the 100000 point bonus
    2. If I cancel the amex within 6 months do i loose the 100000 points
    Thanks

    • +2

The 100,000 Qantas points in your account is very easy to make never expire. Just as long as you buy something at Woolworths once every two years to a linked account. Ie. THAT easy.

If you cancel the Amex after you get the points you still keep the points.

  • Ok dumb question (im new to all this).

Just got the ANZ card for the 75,000 points and reading through tbe posts it looks as though i can apply for this too. Pros/cons of doing that?

Means i will have 2 cards on the go and plan on cancelling 1 if not both before the 12 months are up

    Appreciate any help..!

    • +1

Well the ANZ one is not really worth it without the Amex card for me. I would consider dumping it once you get your points and get the westpac Amex for 12 months and then switch to CBA for 12 months and repeat.

    • +2

I have both an Amex and a Visa. Reason for this is that Amex earn more points per dollar while Visa is more widely accepted. Since you don't own a card issued by amex you are eligible for the 100k bonus.
I have more than 2 cards open at one time and it's not a problem (for me) :)

  • This or the explorer? This doesn’t have mobile screen Insurance? How much does iPhone 6s replacement cost?

    • Tough call, do you go crazy for Qantas? if not go Explorer, it's a great card.
I recently used my screen insurance, fantastic service. Got the claim approved in around 1 week. 10% excess is great :)

Just keep in mind that the QF Ultimate sign up bonus is bigger at the moment

  • How many Melb to Bris economy flights will 100k of QFF points get you?

    • 4.16 to be precise

      • that is 4.16 return flights :D

  • +1

I was going to pull the trigger on getting what will be my 5th Amex card (the Amex Platinum Charge Card for $1,200 a year) but will now wait for when my CBA finishes off it's second year (yes, I was too lazy and paid the $250 for a second year) and my Westpac still hit 12 months in December. My permanent Amex cards being my Nab home loan one and my wife's NAB supplementary one.

My QFF Gold runs out to lifetime silver in March 2018 so might start living the Virgin airlines life from then (as well as more travel), which is when this Card will really help me out as my IHG Platinum will drop another level in Jan 2018. I just need to hope that the 120,000 bonus MR points offer is still around then. I think the option to have a separate Amex Platinum card just for business expenses (different number but same name) is good as well as free Supplementary cards for my Wife etc. That will cover my desire for those AmEx Shop Small deals. :-)

What I would really love to get is the Amex Centurion card "The Black Card". :-) It is a bloody heavy card but no way I'll put $250,000 a year on it. I have a cousin who is a supplementary cardholder of one and he gets some awesome benefits with it.

Anyone here with experience with the Amex Platinum Charge Card?

    • +1

Yeah centurion is nice to look at but the value proposition sucks :D
I would call up CBA and get that fee waived ;) their recent devaluation should justify it.

      • +1

If they give me the card for free for another year when I go to cancel it in October then I'll stay with them but to be honest I have been putting all my expenses on the newer Westpac one and so CBA barely gets a hit except for those Amex deals etc. I spread myself too thin to be a worthwhile customer to them. I'm also the sort of person who pays for their bills on time or in advance.

        • CBA diamond still holds its value if you do a lot of international transactions, 1.5 frequent flyer points and no fx fees isn't to bad!

        • @points4life:

Hi OP what are the Fx fees for using this card (American Express Qantas Ultimate Card) overseas, had a wade through T&c's online and it's not obvious to me? Thx

  • Just got a call from amex saying its all approved and ready to go but the offer is only 55k points. Even though I told him it was a partner offer and going to the website now shows 100k, on their website it only showed 55k and he said 100k was only for the velocity member card. Anyone else get this issue?

    • The link to the partner offer is unique. Most likely you did not click through on the link listed on Flight Hacks.
For example you visit Amex directly or you used a friends referral link. It could also be the case that the offshore call center you spoke to are not informed about Australian campaigns and therefore only know about the standard offer (55k), it wouldn't surprise me :)

      • I did go through the flight hacks link but the person I spoke to was definitely an offshore call centre :(

  • The QFF account you get with this is it free or you pay the QFF fee of $89 each year… currently paying that for anz ff card and that sucks :(

also because im paying $89 yearly on the anz created Qantas FF account - can i transfer to a free Qantas FF account? or do i need to be in the QFF account amex create for me - like what ANZ did for?

    • +2

You should never pay to open a QF account. Just go to: https://www.qantaspoints.com/join-now?code=FAMILYFREE
Also it's free for life to open a QF account. Unless you got sucked in and paid $89 which is a one off-fee

Since you have ANZ, you're also eligible for this promotion with 100k points.

      • Thanks man, just saved my self 89 dollars.

  • I wanna buy an ipad, which on qnantas store comes up as 220,000 points. I already have 20000 points. I'm thinking of getting this (100,000 points for 450) and the ANZ FF black card ( 75,000 for free) and pay off the rest which makes the ipad pro come down to about 550 bucks ( saving around 800 bucks). ( I gotta pay for a course so the minimum spend to get the points is not an issue)
    thoughts on this ?

    • +3

Could pay for the whole thing by selling 195,000 points for $1950 and have change left over.

      • how do I do that ??

        • Sell on gumtree.

Even if you don't, those points would get you $1000 in gift vouchers….how much does your iPad cost retail then? $1800?

        • +1

          Right here

          Examples:

  • Dont like this part "Complimentary Qantas domestic return Economy flight every year7 after your first Card spend on selected Qantas products and services", Means you need to buy a ticket from Qantas to redeem the free flight

    • Or you just buy a fully refundable business class ticket (a year in advance), and refund it when you've redeem your flight. I've done this a number of times to get Qantas lounge passes.
