    • or spend a dollar carbon offsetting a fictional flight ;) https://www.qantasfutureplanet.com.au/

      • hi, so just pay a dollar here with the new amex and we are eligible for the complimentary flight?

      • can you confirm this worked for you?

  • +3

Thanks OP. got the call today - confirmed 100K point bonus. cards on their way … woot woot

  • Just got approved for one of these cards.
I want to refer the mrs so that I can get the bonus points. I believe this deal ends at the end of the month?
When will I get a referral link? I hope there is time before the end of the month to receive the bonus link and get her approved!

    • Hi, this is an exclusive deal so even if you referred your partner it will work out lower than going through the link on Flight Hacks. I believe with a referral it comes to about 90k all up, 60 for her and 30 for you.
Referrals should be available ones you have the card and activate your account.

  • Hi All,
I applied for this card through the link and have received my card in mail yesterday. The card pack doesn't mention anything about bonus points or spends. Is there a way to check that offer was applied to this card application?
    Cheers

    • If you went through the Flight Hacks link and you saw a message on the screen which mentions the "100,000" bonus points you're good to go. If you went directly through the Amex site you'll only get 55,000 points.
As for the spend, it was there as well and is $1500 in the first 3 months.

  • Hi OP and everyone, I'm about to get this card just one minor concern I have in mind making me undecided which card to pick (Velocity platinum or Qantas Ult).
I am a Melbournian and it is highly unlikely that I will use Amex Lounge in Sydney. Is it popular enough to be sold on classified (don't seem to find any in classified) and roughly what is the ongoing rate? Thank you everyone

    • Unable to sell the entitlement, as it's loaded onto the credit card. Velocity passes are loaded onto your frequent flyer account.

      • Thanks! Good to know ;)

        • No worries. You could of course sell one entry to somebody in Sydney airport… $20 is better than nothing, and I'm sure people with long transits would pay.

  • Where is the best place to sell the domestic flight? Are they generally easy to sell for the $300 range?

    • Not sure what the going rate is these days, but the old Platinum Edge uses to fetch $250, so shouldn't be less than that. Target people flying Perth to east coast.

  • i'm new to this CC point business. after i spend $1.5K on the card, would the point appear straight away? do i need to apply for it? Been thinking to use the points for the trip in mid sept

    • Yes. Once you've spent the money, the points will appear very soon (2-3 days) in your Amex points summary.

      • Thanks. Just realised that i am not eligible for this because i have only cancel my amex DJ card last April.

  • Alright.

better to go explorer or ultimate? I'm likely to cancel cc within the first year to dodge the second annual fee unless it can be easily offset by travel credit.

My spend on the card wouldn't be very high I don't think so points aren't much of an issue.

I think it comes down to a couple things:
    1. How many FF points are the 100K american express reward points convertible to?
    2. After doing some research looks like the travel credit is only redeemable by booking through American Express - is this portal more expensive than going through alternate routes? How 'usable' is it actually (do you actually save a full 400$ compared to going through a travel agent etc.) ? And am I able to book flights etc. for other people?

    Thanks!

    • Amex explorer earns into the MRG program (membership rewards gateway) so 2 MRG points are worth 1.5 frequent flyer points (in most cases). Correct, the travel credit can only be redeemed online through the Amex shopping portal, it's on par with hotel booking websites etc. You book flights, car rental, hotels for anyone you like. Keep in mind the credit needs to be used in 1 hit otherwise you will forfeit the difference. If the total balance is more you can simple pay the difference with you Amex.

As to which is better? Up to you to decide! Flexibility vs Qantas

  • Those who have the card; how does booking the free flight work if you don't intend to travel alone?

I'd like to use the free flight as part of a family trip which means I would be redeeming points for an adult and child along with my free flight. Concerned that I would have to make two separate bookings and most likely not be seated together.

Can anyone who has redeemed through AMEX advise if this is the case?

    • Yes you would need to make 2 separate bookings. If you're traveling with a child Qantas will accomodate you both and organise seating together. When booking the free flight just mention you have already booked a flight using points and ask them to link the booking together.

      • AMEX staff can do the same flight linking that Qantas sales?

  • Just signed up and accepted for this card. Will purchase my next few work flights with Qantas to get to the $1500 spend within 3 months and qualify for the 100,000 points. I'm brand new to this, so I have a few queries.

What can I get for the points I will accrue?
Do I cancel the card at the end of 12 months and seek out another deal?
The insurances provided by the card seem worth the annual membership alone. Am I reading it correctly?

    • +1

You can redeem points for flights. You can cancel the card whenever you like, it's up to you. The insurance is an added bonus; as is the complimentary flight and lounge access.

      • Thanks for that mate. The insurance is almost enough of a bonus, if you ask me.

  • +1

bugger left it too late to apply for this one!

    • Not to worry, Amex have just extended the deal until October :D

  • +1

This might need to be unflagged as Expired as the deal has been extended!

    • I'm not sure how I can update it?

  • Thanks Op! At the beginning I had the VISA/AMEX with ANZ and wssn't that keen on AMEX but it grew on me. Since ANZ parted ways with AMEX this has come at a perfect time. Cheers!

  • Merged from American Express Qantas Ultimate Card - 100,000 Qantas Points, Domestic Flight ($450 Annual Fee)

Amex have increased the bonus up to 100,000 points for direct application and customer referrals. If you use an OzBargain referral link then one of your fellow OzBargainers gets 30,000 points (how nice of you).
Same usual boring rules apply which I'll post below - but one thing I've noticed with Amex is that they will consider "Household" income - not just "Personal" income. Last time they had this offer I used an ozbargain referral to get my card and then we got one for my wife using my referral link. 230,000 points for $900 (plus a free flight each and 4 passes to the lounge in Sydney). Even if you just sell the points for 1c each that's $2300-$900 = $1400 profit.

This link should give you a random OzBargain referral: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/api/referral/112

Hey MODS - Can the direct link be the OzBargain referral link?

Remember that free flights change after October to travel credit

Note: On 31 October 2017, the complimentary domestic flight will be replaced with a $450 Qantas Travel Credit. The Qantas Travel Credit can be redeemed for any eligible Qantas flight booked and paid online through American Express Travel in a single booking

      • Yep - what I'm not sure of is do we still need to fulfill "after your first Card spend on selected Qantas products and services" to get the $450 credit?

        In the T&C it says:

The Qantas Travel Credit will be available each year of Card Membership, as long as you have paid the annual fee and your account is current and in good standing.

This implies you don't need to have a card spend on selected Qantas products and services first, but it's unclear particularly with respect to the first year.

        • Correct - it'll just be a feature of the card. I'm pretty sure the $1500 spend would be for the bonus points on offer.

      • will $450 can be spent on Qantas international flights ?

    • +5

      You lost me at $450

      • +1

Free domestic flights with qf would be what, $250-300 in value? Two complimentary passes to the lounge can be sold for $100.

$100 "cost" annually, with a juicy 100k points signup. No brainer really at least for the first year.

i'd say switching to $450 qantas travel credit may actually of benefit to ppl that don't travel to WA much.

        • Two complimentary passes to the lounge can be sold for $100.

Can you sell those Amex Sydney lounge passes? I just figured they were tied to the card, but it would be great if you can seeing as I don't live in Sydney!

          • +2

@Evil-Elmo: Nope - you can't 'sell' the Amex lounge passes - as they read your card at the desk.

In any case - the Amex lounge at Sydney is small - has a bit of a northerly view - and it all depends on what time of the day you are there. We were there a few years ago around breakfast, and they weren't in any rush to restock stuff. It was a 'bonus' to have - but I wouldn't go out of the way for it.

          • @Evil-Elmo: @tonyjg: My mistake. I thought they were qantas lounge passes.

    • +1

Newb question but where can one buy/sell ff points, as mentioned above?

      • +1

Forums, theres a few buyers/sellers there. Check the classifieds.

      • Right here

      • +2
        • Wonder if anybody on Ozbargain has been stung by Qantas.

Read other forums that other people have had all their points frozen and taken away. That was for both the seller and buyer.

They sometimes call you up and ask you questions like who gave it to you, whats their name and contact details and relation etc.

    • Thanks OP! I've never held an Amex before so was wondering which deal to sign up for.

Is this card better or is the Amex explorer better?

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/318956

      • +1

The biggest difference - This card can be used for Qantas points. The Explorer does not give Qantas benefits.

        • +1

If you don't have many FF points in any program yet, the Explorer is better IMO. Krisflyer better for flights into and around Asia, Velocity better for domestic flights. Qantas is only good if you have large points balances that allow you to fly long haul in business and first (including Emirates).

    • can't believe I ordered the wrong Amex card (one arrived on Friday - will need to ring and get it swapped to the QF card). DOH !!!

    • "Complimentary Qantas domestic return Economy flight each year* after your first Card spend on selected Qantas products and services"

      er.. no.

      • er… you're an Ozbargainer. Book a refundable flight? ;)

        • lol :p hmm hadn't thought that scammy! true but prob couldn't be bothered with the hassle when I can just get a Velocity card instead. I refuse to use Qantas or Jetstar anymore unless forced :/

        • @yanman: Depends what your goal is. 100k QF points don't have to be redeemed on QF… fly EK or CX or other OW carriers :)

    • How does this card compare to the Explorer Card. Which is better overall?

      • Depends on what you value more. Explorer gives more flexibility but if you already hold a Qantas balance or are looking to stack this with other card promos Amex Ultimate is the way to go.

    • +1

Might want to add that "new Card Members" (for the purpose of bonus points eligibility) are defined as those who do not currently hold OR have not previously held ANY card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period.

That would exclude the majority of Ozbargainers unfortunately :-(.

      • i was just going to ask the question…

    • Hi guys.

I wanted to ask about the " household income" for this card.
Lets say u earn more than 65k and ur wife earns a little bit more or slightly less than that, but ur combined household is more than the limit lets say around 100k, so then u can apply for 2 cards- 1 for irself n 1 for ur wife ?

The second thing is that u need to spend on selected Qantas products to get the travelcredit or free flite. By searching around i have found out that the cheapest thing to get in selected Qantas products is to qantas frequent flyer membership for some one in NZ. It costs about 46-50 AUD, depending on the conversion rate.

Correct me if i am wrong.

      Hope to see replies soon.

      Cheers.
      Hassan.

      • Hi Hassan,

Yes amex uses household income to measure eligibility. So yes you could apply for 2 cards, no problem.
For the QF spend, you could book a refundable ticket or use the QF carbon offset website to make a $1(ish) transaction which should go through the same merchant account and trigger the spend.

        • Hi points4life.

Thanks fr ur reply. But in order to get the offset, we need to buy a ticket otherwise it won't allow that 1$ offset- is it rite ?

        • @Hassan9033: Nowp, you can offset any flight so just pick the shortest route for the best value :) Perth to Kalgoorlie is around $1.5 from memory.

        • @points4life: So can you use https://www.qantasfutureplanet.com.au/ and process that offset? Shows as $1.09.

Also do you know how long it takes to access the "complimentary" flight following first purchase?

        • @Daemonseed666: I think ones the transaction shows on your account you can call up the amex team to book the flight.

        • @points4life: Thanks. Gave it a go so let's see if they consider it a Qantas purchase.

  • -4

I also wanted to ask if any of the Ozbargainers did this in the past:
Get ur 100k Qantas points from AMEX and few months down the track, call them n "threaten to cancel in true Ozbargainer way".
What was their response. Did they refund the fees or gave any extra points ?

    • Last time I tried it, they offered me house in Sydney instead of any points.

      • U r lucky mite.
U shd try 1 more time. May b u will get a house in Melbourne as well.

  • Can anyone explain if this is better value than the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black - 75,000 Qantas Points & 75 Status Credits $0 Annual Fee for a newbie? Also do I have to pay $89 joining fee for Qantas membership or is that waived?

    • Also do I have to pay $89 joining fee for Qantas membership or is that waived?

Never. Just google free Qantas membership.

      • +1

Thanks! Just signed up for free.

  • Great deal - one question?

If I have to apply for 0% balance transfer from a CBA Credit card which has some reward points - do i need to empty my rewards points in CBA before I apply? Any experience?

    • If you plan on closing your CBA account than yes you should move those points out first before closing it. BT doesn't mean you have to close the account though :)
