Idk how it made to the featured section lol

  • Need a new ultrabook, anyone have any comments on this?

Buy something decent if you'll be using it daily

      • How bad is this one? I've got a samsung 5 series ultrabook which has been good enough for me. 4 years old i5 3317u, kitted it with a good ssd and performance is still great. Just looking for similar performance but a better screen would be nice. All i'm using it is for web/word processing.

This will fulfill your needs, but I've been burnt by cheap laptops in the past and I personally avoid acer.

        • @tomkun01: Same. Never bought an acer again

Im late to the party - but I've owned one of these for the last 10 months; so feel free to ask me questions.

If you can afford to spend more, definitely consider your options.

The best aspect of the S13 is probably battery life, but that's pretty much the case for any ultrabook these days. Compared with my previous HP Folio13, the S13 runs cool and almost silently, which is nice.
The screen on the S13 is reasonable though not especially vivid for an IPS panel. The keyboard is okay (though very little key travel), touchpad is woeful - mines in for warranty repair currently to have this replaced. The entire casing is plastic, and is prone to flexing, especially when opening and closing the screen. Also keep in mind the RAM is soldered to the mainboard on this model, so there's pretty much zero upgradability. Bloatware isn't great, but you can always switch to a clean Windows 10 install.

For a 'budget' ultrabook - it's okay I guess, but as I said before, if you can afford to increase your budget, then definity consider looking elsewhere.

I've had mine since July last year, bought for ~$1000 back then from Singapore. Same specs but mine came with 512gb SSD as standard.

It is plastic in areas, bit of a step down from the Acer S7 from 2012 IMO.

It's no xps13 or spectre but great for the price. I don't use a laptop everyday so I've never wanted to spend much more than a grand every 3-4 yrs but wanted portability when I do need it for travel etc.

Edit: and a full size HDMI port which u believe is quite rare in this form factor! Great when I'm doing presentations

  • Hey guys
How does this compare with a Lenovo think pad e470 for aeound $800?
Im not too well versed in generations if processors and stuff

    • +3

That's an i5-7200U vs an i5-6200U. Very similar CPUs in terms of speed, the 7200U being a bit faster with a slightly higher clock speed (?temp). Slight improvements to power management, but nothing major.

The GPU of the 7200U (HD Graphics 620) is more of an improvement. Full hardware acceleration of youtube videos and 4k HEVC, so more power efficient.

Would you hold out for another Lenovo deal? I appreciate your help

    • +1

I'd say wait for Lenovo. I never have much confidence in Acer.

  • +1

Be cautious. The reviews comments are so bad on Amazon.com that I think I should not have a try.

  • Warranty?

    • +2

Warranty returns need to go back to Acer in Texas, USA

Acer don't cover keyboard under warranty so i wont buy again.

Ex-Acer employee here. Generally they'll try and rule out any moving part which comes into user contact as "physical damage", until proven otherwise. Assuming you've bought in Australia, you're covered by ACCC consumer rights, which Acer can't exclude; so it's well worth throwing this at them and raising the matter with Fair Trading in your state if they try to weasel out of it.

one of the keys came out of keyboard acer aspire E 14 . I rang Acer they said keyboard not covered on the laptops . He said about $140 to get replaced ,laptop cost me about $220 on sale i got a keyboard from china for about $25 delivered and installed myself.

        • for the future dont believe reps. consuer laws override anything they dream up. if it is part of the laptop it will be covered.

Acer isn't a very good brand. Great price tho.

  • I'm also wary about Acer, bought once, never again. It's worth it to dish out some extra cash for a laptop you use regularly :)

  • 2 good Acers here, all still working. 11" Aspire (bad battery) & 14" Aspire 3830T i5-2430M (battery still good). They have traveled to many other countries with me and still work fine, no problems at all so not all Acers are bad. I also bought a really cheap Acer for a friend in a good deal a year or two back which still works fine no problems.

On the other hand have had a Compaq and a HP laptop both die on me. I sort of expect it of anything that is used a lot AND travels.

Current latest laptop a Lenovo Thinkpad bought in a Lenovo/TA T460S deal here a little while back, great machine! Somewhat higher price point than an Acer.

  • Mr current Acer laptop is about 5 years old.it's quite popular in Asia for a reason.

  • Anyone have any experience with Amazon's squaredtrade warranty service? I thinking 100 for 4 years is a good idea.

  • How long till Amazon come to Aus?

  • the old acers are good at all, not sure about new acers

    • The last really cheap one I got for a friend a year or two back is still going! It cost less than $250 after various deals at the time.
