  • Anyone know what these are like?

    Cheers

Would like to know as well, especially if you have a thick case? Guess it's all dependent on the magnet.

    • +18

I'll let you know in 15 to 40 days :)

An unboxing video (ie: no practical information whatsoever) in portugese.

I challenge anyone to post another video less helpful but technically about the Xiaomi Roidmi.

        • +2

@soupiejr: strong competitor! Chinese dialect with no subtitles! But it does show a potential design problem if your air vents can't hold the weight, which is practical information.

I can't wait for the next nominee!

    car holder

    must be strong plastic….

  • +2

I have one of these, they are VERY good

My phone (a Nexus 6p) almost never falls off and I have a case on it (between the metal plate)

The double sided tape is much better that other holders i have used in the past and its very minimal - for this price I have purchased another one for the wifes car

    • +5

Almost never? That's almost good enough.

I have a Steelie that never, ever falls off. I have in the past had a much cheaper BlitzWolf that also never failed (but caused damage to my air vent - the magnets were perfect though).

Point being - almost isn't quite good enough. It should take extraordinary circumstances to dislodge it.

  • +11

    Called Roidmi… Shaped like a butt plug…

    • What, so it isn't a butt plug that can hold your phone?

      • Yes, you can. They even vibrate together.

  • -3

oh ok. Will it work with the iPhone 7?

    • +26

No, you need to goto the Apple Store if your an iPhone user. Just walk in and bend over….

      • +3

        Haha ok

  • Is it meant to stick to wind screen or dashboard?

I don't have any surface flat enough on my dash to stick anything on. And the windscreen is too far away to reach.

    • Mounts to an air vent

      • Seems you have to stick a magnet onto your phone. You're not meant to remove it either.

        • +3

You can put the disc magnet on the inside of a phone cover instead

        • +1

@Olokun: This recommendation changed my whole impression of these things, thank you for the great tip. I have now ordered 2!

        • I've got an alternative brand and that's what I did - put the magnet on the back of my case.

I used duct tape instead of the sticker so I can re-use it in another case if I change.

        • @Olokun: My case has a magnetic flip cover, which is not good for mounting.

  • Silver showing AU$16.22

    • Thanks. Updated

  • will this affect phone signal or the circuitry from the strong magnet?

    • +1

Currently using a generic one and never had a problem.

    • Depends on the phone and the position of components.

I had an S6 that, with magnets on the back, was difficult to use NFC as the chip was located fairly central. I had to move the magnet to the lower end of the phone to make NFC usage possible.

My new HTC U11 works fine in all aspects with a strong magnet sitting centrally on the back of the device.

    Xiaomi ROIDMI Car Holder

Whats the max weight of the car it can hold?

Lol JV would get negged to infinity for comments like that lol

I know, right! I'm getting up voted, maybe I'm the anti-jv? Lol

    Silver is more expensive @ $9.49 :P

      Guess you win this thread…

    • +1

Thanks. Bought Silver as black sold out now.

      • wow so when I posted that I saw it said 39 units sold.. now it says 103 lol

      • Silver ran out of stock for some reason….

  • Baseus does a pretty good one as well : http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Baseus-360-Rotating-Car-Holder-Ma…

bought one for me and my partner, the sticky bit is very strong, no issues with the s8+ weight. I also put my paytag at the back of my phone and its still working, no issues with maps while its mounted as well :)

    • Does the sticky bit ruin the car plastic surface? How easy is it to come off?

      • oooo sorry, I havent tried pulling it off yet and dont think I would be for a while. I am pretty sure it is the 3m adhesive so if you have any comparison.

      • This is my concern as well it sticks too well and will damage the car surface.

  • +1

Looks good but can we get a spare magnetic sheet so we can use two phones? Or can the metal bit be removed when needed?

    • Read above about putting metal bit inside phone cover

      • +1

Thanks but doesn't really solve the problem. Wife's phone is not the same size as mine. So we'd have to swapp the metal piece depending on who's driving.

  • How long would a cpu last on it?

  • +1

I can't comment on this mount, but I can highly recommend ExoMount mounts for anyone looking for a rock solid mount. The CD mount versions are excellent, and the suction cup versions are the only ones I've used that haven't fallen off the windscreen over time. A bit pricier, but worth the extra money.

  • +1

or a generic one from aliexpress for AU$3.72 delivered](https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Universal-magnetic-car-holde…)

Would be interested to know recommendations for one that doesn't require a magnet stuck to my phone or left in my phone case. One with clips or good sticky/suction?

    • +2

Got a couple of these over 3 years ago. Work really well and still as good as the day I bought them.

Some people seem to complain of it being brittle on Amazon but I've never experienced it. However I do set it up so the bottom of my phone rests on my dash board. It reduces the vibration and also the load on the clips.

      Anyway, for a $2.50 …

      • These are good cheap holders. I'm still using it in my car.

    • With this type of phone mount only a small steel disc (less than 1mm thick) is stuck to your phone case, the magnetic part is in the base.

      • OK I guess I wasn't really clear was I, I know it's not a magnet. I have a Galaxy S8 with a clear case - Assuming that it even fits inside the case and that it didn't scratch the glass back of my phone, it would still look awful with a metal disc behind the clear case and also it would surely bulge the case. Requiring a metal disc to be put inside a phone case in order to use the holder is almost as bad as Coles financial services offering a 'pay tag' sticker to stick to your phone so that you can tap and pay, rather than partnering with Android pay.

  • price for black is showing as AU10.18
    am i doing anythig wrong?

    • +12

Yes, you missed a dollar symbol & misspelt "anything".

    • Looks like they are sold out at the lower price.

  • +1

I assume an air vent holder complies with the Australian Road Rules for phone use in cars?

    http://www.keepyoureyesontheroad.org.au/pages/Cradles-and-ha…

  • Cheers OP

  • I prefer those that stick on dash and magnetic. Never liked vent ones.

    • I found the suction cup ones always fall off on a hot day. The one I have at the moment is a spring-loaded clamp one that clamps onto the airvent fin and then another clamps holds the phone. It's great and stable, but I now need something for the family car, and this Roidmi one seems to fit the bill.

  • Price now $10.16

    • For black only, as OP has mentioned in the description. Golden is still $9.56AUD.

  • +1

Are these super sturdy? Don't want some flimsy crap that falls out every time I hit a speedbump/pothole….

EDIT: Also, I'm assuming the only way this works is if you take your iPhone out of its' case?

    • a lot of these will work through cases.

Spigen cases are specifically designed to house the backing plate.

  • Needed a couple of these. will be interested to see how they go against the logitech +trip

  • use this coupon "TWITTER" will give some discount. Got it through little bit googling. It is better than nothing.

    • I think the code increases the price =P

    • Tried, increased the price to $11.60, better without.

      • sorry. I was thinking it in AUD.

  • I use these.
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Universal-360-Magnetic-Mobile-Pho…
Pretty much like a Steelie except it doesn't cost $40
Have it on my Nexus 5X with a hard cover for 2 years and has never fallen off.
Was never a fan of vent mounts as they seem to fall off the vent when you go over speed humps or a small pothole.

  • I just received one of these they are really highly rated on aliexpress and it works great.

US $3.28 & I received it in about 3.5 weeks. Not sure how it differs from the Roidmi.

  • +1

The ebay link by Gomo now shows item is back in stock

    • Yup and it's only 8.99 AUD now…

  • +1

Man, it'd be great if car manufacturers all just got together and agreed on some sort of dashboard universal mounting socket - not the actual phone holder, but a small hole in the dash that could be used to mount actual phone holders into. No more suction cups, or blocked vents, etc.

They could just have these sockets in a few places on each dash board. It doesn't have to be a big and ugly hole - in fact when they're not in use the socket could be capped with a small plug to help it blend into the dash.

As an added bonus, have the mounting sockets provide power for charging through the phone holder. No more cables dangling down to the cigarette lighter.

Hey, they standardised audio jacks, cigarette lighters, etc. Why not this?

And yes, I've put too much thought into this ;)

    • That's why they put in Bluetooth stereos instead. Don't have to take your phone out.

      • +1

That won't help though when you need to see the screen for functions like google maps though

      • Agreed, but then there are maps, navigation, driving, and all those other at-a-glance car apps.

        • +1

Pretty much. Not to mention that way manufacturers can charge you more for all those premium features.

  • +1

Would these things damage air vent?
    I'm always skeptical about it.
    The vent plastics feels flimsy

  • My phone has a slightly curved back (LG G4), and is in a very tight case. Does anyone know if the metal plate that attaches to the phone is flexible? I.e. does it bend enough to fit between the curved phone back and the case?

    • +1

Yes I used something (very) similar and it worked fine. The magnet circle is not that big so the curve doesn't affect it too much.

  • I've been using THIS for the last year now & the NFC works fine. I put the disc 1/2" inch below my camera. NFC works fine. Its not very strong though & spirited driving causes it to move around a bit. I'm looking for something stronger.

  • Has anyone received it yet? I purchased mine thru Ebay but it still hasn't arrived
Estimated delivery Thu, 03 Aug - Tue, 22 Aug

  • So I found out last night that the metal disc blocks my S8+ from wirelessly charging.

  • Received mine today. Does a decent job
