Solid discount from the list of $1900.

But for $1900 you'd think there would be dedicated graphics . Although I guess it is ultra thin

    • +3

Not sure how they came up with $1900.

      • +3

They markup the price on the SSD capacity. Big margins for different capacities even though its probably easy to replace with aftermarket ones.

  • +4

    Awesome laptop for the price

  • +1

How can large manufactures still think that huge bezels are okay, it's 2017 almost seems like bezels have increased in size the last few years

    • +1

The bezels on this one really aren't that large.

    • +1

I'd say it's a cost/benefit tradeoff. Probably a very high cost to have very small bezels and little benefit to the user beyond aesthetics.

      • +1

My X1 carbon disagrees with you. A big screen with a much more compact footprint is great for travelling.

        • How much did it cost?

        • +1

          @atlas:

          that's almost twice the price…

        • @clse945111: I'm just pointing out that some people value the bezel-less form factor. Whether that's of value is for the individual to decide.

In addition to the bezel, this Acer is 6cm deeper in size, and 150g heavier. I would find that pretty annoying as I carry my laptop daily.

$1400 is not exactly an outrageous amount to pay for what some rate as the best-in-class ultrabook, compared to the likes of a Macbook.

Nonetheless, this deal represents great value if form factor and build quality are not high priorities.

  • +1

    Thanks, TA bought one

    • +13

      He did?

      • +1

        Haha my bad

        • +10

Don't worry, we've all committed comma crimes.

        • +11

@strangeloops66: Comma comma comma comma comma chameleon…..

        • @Trishool: Upvote almost cancelled out by five character ellipsis. Unless that was grammatic irony.

For what it's worth, I bit the bullet on this. Price was just too compelling. Hopefully made the right call :)

  • +1

Worth noting that this is a 6th gen processor. Not the latest Kaby Lake. Although still a decent price.

  • Not bagging this, but I got an Acer Swift 7 for a client and the build quality and thinness was excellent.

  • +1

    Is keyboard backlit

    • Yes. From laptopmag.com:

The layout offers two different stages of backlighting, one for dimly lit rooms and another that goes to full brightness.

    • +1

Sure is. The backlight isn't permanently lit and is on a sleep timer; if it matters.

  • Is it touch screen?

    • +2

      From laptopmagn.com:

The Aspire S 13 I reviewed came with a nontouch 1080p display, but you can order it with a touch-screen panel. I'd stick with nontouch, as you'll get more battery life. Plus, this panel is plenty colorful and bright.

This is unlikely to be touch.

      • Thanks… Will get it anyway.

        • +1

Didn't know/think there was a touch screen option but much prefer the matte non-touch anyway as makes viewing so much better without reflections.

        • +1

@samlor: There is a touchscreen option with matte screen. IMO they're not worth it, I barely use touchscreen, and can't disable it so it just sucks battery.

  • I want to run dual monitors off this laptop (not including laptop screen) but doesn't appear to a compatible docking station for it. Are their generic displayport / hdmi extenders that I can buy or is there another way to do it with this laptop? cheers

    • +1

Check out Targus USB 3.0 dual video docking stations, although they can be quite pricey.

You can also try buying a cheap USB Video Adapter off ebay, plug one monitor into this and plug the other monitor in via the HDMI port, you will have to check if the adapter you get is compatible with windows 10. This will be the cheaper option.

    • +2

Displayport supports monitor daisy chaining. I don't know if this laptop does.

      • +2

Seeing it has HDMI, not Displayport; that'd be a negative.

  • +1

I've got sooo many laptops but this is probably the best deal I've ever come across and had to get it. Great find OP, thanks.

    • Me too. Been loving my similar sized Toshiba Kirabook i5-5200U so couldn't resist the slight upgraded specs and bought!

      • +3

Where the hell are you both getting so much money from?

        • +1

I've been buying progressively fewer products not listed as OzBargain deals.

        • +4

          @samlor: That's a terrible way to live.

        • +4

perhaps they no longer buy smashed avo on toast?

        • Get paid too much for not doing much :P

  • +1

    Edit:never mind!

  • This does seem like a really good deal but Dammit, I want a Gaming PC

  • +2

No Bluetooth? Surely eBay listing is wrong…

EDIT: Mwave lists specs affirming Bluetooth is present.

    • +4

      Hi strangeloops66,

Yes, you are correct - listing is wrong.. it definitely has bluetooth!

      Working on the change now.

      • Also has backlit keyboard. May want to add that too :)

        • +1

Thanks for the heads up dude!

        • Na

    • Dammit - I was going to buy this but didn't because of the bluetooth, now sold out.

  • +2

Checked with JW guys and its Backlit Keyboard and have Bluetooth too ….. Just Bought one! ;)

  • +3

I picked up an Asus 430Uq on the weekend for $1700 (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Asus-Zenbook-UX430UQ-14-FHD-i7-51…) with the ebay code although its not been dispatched as yet. I'm now having a severe sense of buyers remorse after seeing this for about half the price.

I'm only really looking to use it for my music collection/djing (mainly at home rather than taking it out) and general internet usage so would this be a better deal for the money? I need a 512gb ssd but not too fussed on 8gb or 16gb ram for my needs.

    • I have the 430uq, I reckon this is a better deal. I'd consider cancelling/refunding and going for the new one.

      • Yeah, did that in the end. Appreciate the Asus probably has a better build quality, newer i7 and more ram, for what I need it for the Acer will do me fine and its pretty much half the price too (wife will be pleased)

  • This look so much better than a $1500 xps13 spec. How does one fare with them?

  • +1

I'm confused… is this an S5 or an S13? The S5 came out 5 years ago? :S The SKU matches to a Centrecom link with reviews from then.

    • Whattt

    • Hi Parlai, it's definitely an S5. SKU : NX.GCHSA.006-C77 . Hope this helps!

      • Should we be worried about a 5yo laptop?

        • +5

Guys, sorry I missed that in the query - it's not a 5 year old laptop.

This variation of the S5 has the i7-6500 CPU (6th Gen), which is last generation (or 2016).

Hope this clears it up :)

        • @JWComp: thank you

        • @JWComp:

That means it's S5 and not S13. Is my understanding correct? Title is confusing as it says S13.

        • @saray: Yes that is correct - sorry, I overlooked this with OP's topic, and we got smashed in between (sold out!) . Definitely the S5, 6th Gen CPU, so 2016 model (not 5 years old).

  • I don't really know much about these, but can anyone suggest if this would be a good/OK computer for someone at uni? 1.3kgs doesn't sound too heavy, but would it be ok with microsoft word, excel etc and possibly a basic stats program (e.g spss)? thanks

    • +2

      Yes.

    • +6

      Hi Midlake,

This laptop is even more than okay, for uni/studying and general work use. It's a little powerhouse for that sort of usage. I'd only advise against it, if you were doing CAD/Rendering work etc.

      Hope this helps!

      • Hi rep - who do you guys use for shipping? If Aussie Post or Startrack I can mail to my Parcel Locker for convenience.

        • +1

Hi Fookos, so sorry for the delay in response! We use Aust Post, so yes a Parcel Locker is fine - hope you had a chance to purchase one!

        • @JWComp:

          All good :)

  • Would this be a good laptop for a programmer? Writing code, etc?

    • This machine is overkill for programming, it's more than enough.

  • Thanks TA! just bought one :)

  • Decided to get one and cancel the Asus I had ordered. Cheers OP, great deal and you've saved me nearly 850 bucks ;)

  • hey, just ordered one, but noticed Warranty is listed as 1 year. How would i go about claiming warranty for the second year?

    • I guess you'll have to pay for parts and labour for repair.

      • +1

i'm pretty sure aussie gov mandates 2 year warranty on laptops, no?

        • +3

There is no set statutory 'warranty' period but rather a statutory right for a guarantee as to acceptable quality (section 54 of the ACL). Under the ACL, the time period is a period which is reasonable to expect, given the cost and quality of the item (see below):

Goods are of acceptable quality if they are as:

          • fit for all the purposes for which goods of that kind are commonly supplied; and
          • acceptable in appearance and finish; and
          • free from defects; and
          • safe; and
          • durable;

as a reasonable consumer fully acquainted with the state and condition of the goods (including any hidden defects of the goods), would regard as acceptable having regard to the following matters:

          • the nature of the goods; and
          • the price of the goods (if relevant); and
          • any statements made about the goods on any packaging or label on the goods; and
          • any representation made about the goods by the supplier or manufacturer of the goods; and
          • any other relevant circumstances relating to the supply of the goods.

Goods do not fail to be of acceptable quality if:

          • the consumer to whom they are supplied causes them to become of unacceptable quality, or fails to take reasonable steps to prevent them from becoming of unacceptable quality; and
          • they are damaged by abnormal use.

          Nor do they fail, if:

          • the consumer acquiring the goods examines them before the consumer agrees to the supply of the goods; and
          • the examination ought reasonably to have revealed that the goods were not of acceptable quality.

Now the above is all well and good theoretically, but in the real world you may have issues trying to get non-compliant retailers to comply, because your definition of 'reasonable' will ostensibly vary from theirs. In such cases, you can write to the ACCC, or launch action at a tribunal etc.

        • @-.-: Ahh thanks for the answer. sounds like some work would be required to get the seller to honour it

        • +1

@lucyr: It depends who you buy it from. I've had very positive experiences from big retailers. Apple has replaced my iphone well after the official warranty period a couple of times, no questions asked. But if you're dealing with local small stores, or small online companies who may only be roughly familiar with the ACL, you might be in for an uphill battle. Whatever the case, if you come armed with the actual legislation, your chances will dramatically increase.

  • Does it have builtin gigabit ethernet?

    • No, I bought a usb-c Ethernet converter

  • Tempted to grab one for a upcoming safari. Something to store photos on and some light editing. Anyone use one for photography?…can claim trs as well.

  • bought one, thanks

  • Was searching for laptop specials for ages. Cancelled another order for this upgraded computer and saved $200. Awesome…

  • Many thanks TA. Perfect timing as was looking for a worthwhile prezzie for my Grade Eighter's birthday. Should last her a couple of years I hope :-)

  • Would this be OK for light gaming even though it doesn't have dedicated graphics?

    Specifically, compared to this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LD4MGY4/ref=ox_sc_act_t…

    • Wouldn't use it for gaming
My Intel graphics couldn't run subnautica on low

  • +3

I'll just reiterate my previous comments from another deal on this laptop:

I've owned one of these for the last 10 months; so feel free to ask me questions if you want.

If you can afford to spend more, definitely consider your options.

The best aspect of the S13 is probably battery life, but that's pretty much the case for any ultrabook these days. Compared with my previous HP Folio13, the S13 runs cool and almost silently, which is nice.
The screen on the S13 is reasonable though not especially vivid for an IPS panel. The keyboard is okay (though very little key travel), touchpad is woeful - mines in for warranty repair currently to have this replaced. The entire casing is plastic, and is prone to flexing, especially when opening and closing the screen. Also keep in mind the RAM is soldered to the mainboard on this model, so there's pretty much zero upgradability. Bloatware isn't great, but you can always switch to a clean Windows 10 install.

For a 'budget' ultrabook - it's okay I guess, but as I said before, if you can afford to increase your budget, then definity consider looking elsewhere.

      • +2

        Yep, which in plain english:

AThe LCD bezel, top case (behind rear of the LCD), and bottom are all plastic. Aluminium is used for the casing surrounding the keyboard/trackpad and magnesium composite is used for the internal frame.

        …So mostly plastic.

        • +1

          Cheers :)

    • +1

I appreciate this. You've convinced me to give this one a skip. I'll hold out for a better Lenovo deal (here's looking at you @tightarse).

      • +2

For what it's worth, I bit the bullet on this. Price was just too compelling. Hopefully made the right call :)

      • +1

No worries. I think it really comes down to what you're looking for.

For me, I'd rather have held out for something with a more premium feel and build quality - I'm cursing that I didn't know the Surface Laptop was on its way when I pulled the trigger on this last September.
I use the i3 variant of the S13, I don't need the meaty system specs of an i7 and 128GB suits me fine for an SSD. Seeing both variants have the same battery - it should in theory mean longer battery life.

That said - it's hard to argue with these system specs at this price point, there's a hell of internals on offer for a very tidy price.

    • Thanks, that's the review I needed. Looking for a laptop for someone and I know they have a higher budget than this.
