Thanks - Best fries, so crunchy.
if only they combined these chips with KFC seasoning?

  • +1

Do they still have the garlic salt?

    • +3

There will be people that say it isn't garlic salt, but it is - and yes.

      • Thanks

      • +1

Do they come with garlic salt by default or is that something you request? (I can't eat garlic 😭)

        • I seriously doubt it is garlic salt. Because I know what it smells and tastes like - I've used various brands of it it in cooking - and use granulated and minced garlic too - and I've never smelled or tasted anything resembling garlic salt on their chips. That said, it could be some kind of 'fake' garlic salt made just for them. So you could try a couple/few chips and see if it affects you. If it does, explain that each time and ask for fresh chips with no salt - making it clear you don't want the chips to eve touch the chip tray. Just straight into the packet from the oil drainer - so they don't pick up even a trace of salt. They'll probably still use the same 'chip funnel' though, which would probably have some salt stuck to it. If even that affects, you'd have to ask them to wipe it each time I guess.

        • @GregMonarch: All I know is my local in SA uses a white powder that smells and tastes like a light garlic seasoning. It's definitely not plain salt, and it's most definitely not chicken salt. The smell stays embedded on your fingers until you wash them three or four times. It's so tasty and so mouth watering. I've also used garlic salt at home and the two are pretty similar. Not identical, but extremely similar.

        • @BradH13: those are definitely NOT white powder!!

  • Are the ham and cheese toasties available all day?

    • no :( we only have hash browns all day

      • +1

I think I could eat at least 40 hash browns in one sitting. I just need someone to pay for it! :D

        • +5

I could eat as much of anything I wanted to if someone else paid for it.

      • Why can't you get ham and cheese toasties all day?
Surely it would be something that people would like for lunch?
Or does the toasties machine go into cleaning mode at a certain time & then can't be used until the next morning?
Maybe the toastie making guy only works limited hours before he has to go to school?

    • I don't know if you've had them before, but I had one of these toasties at the Gold Coast airport HJs on the way back from Japan and it was really disappointing - soggy and burnt haha.

      • Mine are great when I get them, guess it depends where you go :(

        • I was hoping they weren't all that bad but it definitely put me off haha! On the other hand I love the new chips and $1 is a fantastic price :D

    • +1

That's just 'Die', with a 't' on the end

    • +3

As long as it doesn't compromise your macros and allows you to stay within your caloric target, it should be alright?

What do you even mean by 'diet'?

    • yes, eating HJ is in my everyday's diet.

  • +2

Amazing chips when they are fried properly (crunchy)

    • +1

Absolutely, when they are hot and crunchy they are the best!

  • -4

Hate the thick cut chips. Prefer shoestring!

    • +2

yep, i prefer the shoestring as well. I hardly go to HJ's anymore since they changed to the thick cut

      • I only get a burger when I go there now.

    • +5

you are in the minority then. I hate shoestring sides, all you taste is the batter with no potato flavour. The thicker the cut the better.

    • -4

I guess people don't like reading what they're eating. Even when it comes straight from the toxic food vendor's website. I use the term food loosely. Nobody can enjoy chips without about a dozen ingredients going into the mix, as the filthy corporations poison you, leading to all sorts of medical complications.

    • +6

will this long list of chemicals and toxins provoke me to stop eating Hungry Jacks's chips?

      no

      • -8

I'm glad for that. Enjoy your Monsanto-infested ingredients. Enjoy your antifoam. Enjoy your continued health.

Corporations care for our health, priority one. Who wants to buy potatoes at the store and peel it themselves and cook in oils that haven't been genetically modified without adding a dozen or so ingredients into the mix to aid production?

        That's for morons. I want my take-away.

Coated Fries: (Potatoes 84%, Vegetable Oils, Modified Potato Starch, Rice Flour, Salt, Leavening (Disodium Dihydrogen Pyrophosphate, Sodium Bicarbonate), Dextrose, Xantham Gum, Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate),

Canola Oil: (Vegetable Oil, Antifoam (900a)

Straight from the Hungry Jacks website. Good eatin' I tellsya. Just like mum used to make it.

        • +2

Enjoy paying for our healthcare with your taxes…

        • @dasher86:

Enjoy paying for our healthcare with your taxes…

Enjoy the medical complications. You'll get nothing but treatment. No cure. As per usual. Let the corporations make money both ways. And then wonder what caused it.

Cargill and Monsanto thank you for your fine choices. As do Competitive Foods Australia, vendors of fine foods. As do your medical practitioners and drug companies.

        • +3

@cheepwun: Thought of buying these chips in HJ North Sydney. But, after reading your comments, decided to walk few more steps and buy Strawberries from Aldi rather. (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/320451)

        • +4

          @cheepwun:

Big pharma just want to treat your symptoms not cure the underlying dis-ease!! If only people knew about healing foods and the natural indigenous and ancient medicines that jungle peoples have known and used for millennia.. maybe we could all have the lengthy lifespans that these peoples were known to enjoy.

        • +3

          @cheepwun:

We all know HJs is full of artificial crap, just like any other fast food joint.

And just like most things in life, if you have it in moderation you'll be fine.

        • +7

I just drank a strange clear liquid from a bottle that said "Dihydrogen Monoxide" on it. Am I doomed now?

        • +5

@smarioc: Jesus man did you know they use that stuff to cool nuclear reactors!!??

        • guess you've never researched the air you're breathing in..otherwise you may want to stop breathing??

    • +4

I googled and checked out all the 'scary sounding chemicals' in your list. What exactly are you concerned about?

Bet you personally didn't even think of conducting some independent research and decided that if you didn't immediately understand and know what an item was, you'd deem it to be 'foreign' and dangerous.

      • +4

What exactly are you concerned about?

        having to do some research

      • What exactly are you concerned about?

Several. Including the fact the oil is genetically modified. Where do you want to start?

        • Hey. I'd be interested in hearing information on the ingrediant that you think is the worst of the bunch. Also, if you're giving sources, could you also link articles from peer approved journals, instead of articles from shady websites? I have academic access so I can access those fine.

I'm throwing my prejudices out the window so I hope you can help persuade me. Cheers.

        • Hey. I'd be interested in hearing information on the ingrediant that you think is the worst of the bunch.

          I don't rank them best-to-worst for you.

Also, if you're giving sources, could you also link articles from peer approved journals, instead of articles from shady websites?

          No.

I have academic access so I can access those fine. Cheers.

Who pays you? Plenty of anti-GMO evidence you have surely come across by now, for starters. Then there is the other stuff on top of it. If you haven't come across it, you haven't even tried. Enjoy your chips.

        • @cheepwun:

Hey buddy. Can I just say that if you want to be persuasive you have to get rid of your hostility. I really want to understand your perspective but it seems like you're just here to be a contrarian.

        • @zailiner:
You're like most posters here: not interested at all but pretending to be. If you had interest, you'd already see plenty of evidence available. Drop the front.

        • @cheepwun:

Why not share the best evidence you have come across?

Did you know that oranges contain mercury? :o What, you don't believe me? What gives you the right to tell me to do your research? You're like most posters here: not interested at all but pretending to be. If you had interest, you'd already see plenty of evidence available.

        • @Ughhh:
          Who was talking to you?

Why not share the best evidence you have come across?

Why would I share 'best evidence' for someone purporting to have access to this-and-that and yet hasn't yet come across one article talking about the effects of GMOs? As if no scientific studies on the planet have talked about the effects on animals and humans (in a negative way). So, there is zero desire to learn objectively…so I should waste my time spoon-feeding them?

Yeah, go search for it yourself. If you actually have an interest. Which you don't.

        • @cheepwun:

You sound like you know your stuff so I was hoping you'd direct me to specific cases to look up.

It's not like I can skip going to the GP because I have access to dozens of medical journals.

Really though, what do you expect me to look up? "GMOs and why they're bad"? Here are the results that pop up when I search for GMO:
          http://puu.sh/wZtTU/72edc48e90.png

I honestly wouldn't know where to start. Just give me a few search terms, that's effortless enough right?

    • +9

Wow so many toxins, they are literally countless! Can you tell me which of those ingredients is toxic?

      Potatoes - seems safe
      Vegetable Oils - seems ok
Modified Potato Starch - just simple potato starch that's probably been enzymatically treated to change the molecule slightly to alter its heat stability or gelatinization time
Disodium Dihydrogen Pyrophosphate - common leavening agent, sometimes appears in baking powder, produces co2 bubbles when heated
Sodium bicarbonate - common baking soda
Dextrose - a basic sugar which naturally occurs in the body
Xantham gum - common polysaccharide used in cooking as a thickening agent. Produced by fermenting simple sugars (look so natural! fermented foods are meant to be healthy right?)
Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate - common buffering or chelating agent… but its also used in leather processing, along with dihydrogen monoxide.. this must be the toxic one!

As for genetically modified food.. I think you're right again I better stop eating seedless watermelons and pink grapefruits. I should probably also stop eating modern nightshade-veggies, which were genetically modified by humans through selective breeding and go back to their naturally occurring, tropane alkaloid containing forbears.

      • +1

Potatoes are probably the most toxic ingredient if they're green.

      • Thanks for the definitions. Now how about the effects? All safe….all without consequence. Yeah right. Time to dig deeper.

        • Please provide evidence that they are not safe. And to preempt it, "do your research" is not a valid answer.

        • -3

          @miicah:
What gives you the right to tell me to do your research? I have done it and made my decisions. If you feel you don't need to, keep eating what they feed you.

    • That is an absurd level of "chemicals are scary" fear-mongering. Please stop.

      • Please don't read it, and please keep eating it. This isn't just about "chemicals are scary" fear-mongering. You deserve what you get.

    • Between this and wifi, how is anyone still alive?

      • Your logic must mean asbestos and smoking have no ill effects. Mum always used to make her chips with a dozen ingredients.

        • -1

The number of ingredients in a recipe has absolutely no correlation with toxicity or health.

        • @BTRaynes:
But the ingredients used are. Start with the oil and work your way up.

        • @cheepwun:
The ingredient most likely to poison you is the potato, which could have dangerous levels of solanine if too old or green.
But as always, the dose makes the poison, and it's incredibly unlikely that any of the ingredients would be toxic as the toxicity levels are minuscule.
Make sure your mum used fresh potatoes next time you tuck into her homemade chippies.

        • @BTRaynes:
People are being poisoned daily…and because they have developed bad eating habits it has become routine. We can discuss at length which is more likely and which isn't and which has immediate consequences and which is more gradual. Commercial food is crap on multiple levels, right from the farm. The other stuff just adds to it.

        • @cheepwun:

Did you know licorice had arsenic and you can get water poisoning?

          Better stop drinking water!

        • @Ughhh:
Thanks, when I drink unfiltered water I go Ughhh.
Who ever thought it would be a good idea to combine liquor and rice? Never liked the stuff.

        • @cheepwun:

Fyi, you can get water poisoning from water regardless of its filtered or not.

        • @Ughhh:
          Wow. Thanks for that knowledge…

        • @cheepwun: You're like most posters here: not interested at all but pretending to be. If you had interest, you'd already see plenty of evidence available. Drop the front.

        • Sure thing bro.

    • you're probably a vegan

      • thanks….

    • +1

Humans have been genetically modifying ALL non wild crops for thousands of years through selective breeding.

  • Thanks!

  • +1

Can i buy more than 1 chips per transaction at 1 each or is there a limit?

    • +3

it didnt say theres a limit in the annoucement i received

      • Thx

  • Is this active in all HJ's in Australia, effective immediately?

  • Sigh no hungry jacks near me for an hour and a half by train each way. :(

    • +4

it only takes 5 seconds in a flying saucer, you may have problem finding somewhere to land it though

      • Ha ha ha very funny you cheeky boy

    • their chips are so good it would be worth it, or try drone delivery ;)

      • Haha you tease :p when drone delivery becomes more available I'll be definitely hopping onto that.

Colesworth fries in the oven just doesn't cut it anymore.

  • +1

Can now get the 2 whopper voucher and add these chips instead of paying extra to get the small chips/drinks. thanks OP

  • +2

Moving to the thick cut chips and changing their salt was the best move HJ's ever did. If we decide to get HJ's for dinner, I just get 3 of the $1 chips. Enough to fill.

  • HJs still put way too much salt on their chips. I prefer KFC chips, especially dipped in their potato and gravy.

    • +4

KFC = soggy unless you tip them out of the box within 20 seconds of receiving them. Sometimes them just sitting in the box while they wait for something else from out the back, is too late.

Potato and gravy… Yech! I'll eat it if it's included, but someone actually LIKES that stuff!? For two decades I avoided using mashed potato powder from the supermarket thanks to that dreadful gluggy mess from KFC… Then I risked it and tried some. Just hot water into a cup, mix the powder in with a spoon til the consistency is like mashed potato - and - it IS mashed potato (before adding butter/margarine). So I don't how KFC manages to mess up something so simple - or why they don't try and improve it - yet they do, and don't.

      • +5

Potato and Gravy is the best menu item at KFC. I could happily purchase a large and some chips and there's my meal.

        • -4

You must have an iron stomach. (Or rats crawl into your mouth at night to sleep, LOL.)

KFC is a shadow of what it once was. People that didn't get to taste it in the 70s don't know what they've missed (or what they're being assaulted with now). You go there still remembering what it used to be like, bite in, and disappointment every time. The chicken has an awful sulphuric/acrid type of taste now that it never had before. The breast less so, but the other pieces… just awful - such a strong stench. Fillet burgers saved KFC I think… without them I wouldn't go there at all. The fillets are the closest item they have to what it used to be like - only weaker flavour, and a little drier.

        • @GregMonarch: I don't see KFC as bad you say, but it is definitely a step down over the last 40 years. It is still better than Maccas, and the fries have never been firm n crunchy. The HJ fries are good but too much salt, and their buns are going down hill I feel. Still they are all only snack food for once in a blue moon when I don't care about my health for that greasy hit of fast food..

        • @doctordv8: If KFC fries are a new batch, and you go straight to the table in their store, and tip the fries out of that box immediately… they don't go soggy. But yeah, who thinks to do that. I only noticed it one day when I tipped the entire box out onto a burger wrapper.

Yes on the HJ salt. Mostly kids working there who have had nothing but sugar and salt on everything since birth - and shake so much of it on.

You don't find KFC chicken pieces (bone in) have an awful sulphur taste?

On another note, I had an original burger the other night. Took it home to put some tomato and melted cheese on it. Was shocked how small the breast 'fillets' are now. Unless they put one of those strip things on instead because it was all they had being near closing time. (There was only one on there if that is what they did. It was about the size of 1.5 fish fingers.)

  • +1

Good deal. Just gotta make sure they fill the box properly.

    • +1

Everyone loves a tightly packed box.

  • +1

So sad it's still 2 days away… I thought it was starting tomorrow :(
Oh well I am healthy for one more day!!

Free burger for survey + $1 fries (and free drink in Shake and Win if you are lucky) = $1 meal :)

    • Free bbq cheeseburger from survey is not work on recent rollout new machines. Tested in two store they won't take any old, new, or even just completed surveys. most store across sydney have new machines now.

Hope someone have different experience and show us how this free bbq chesse still possible

      • What machines? You just give the receipt with code on it to whoever takes your order and get it…

        • +1

PoS registers. He's saying they've got new registers that don't accept the codes.

Who knows if true, but that's what he's saying.
